A False Report.
It» tho Macon Telegraph of Friday
April 1st, there appeared an article.
sent from Tennillc, that is wholly
without foundation, so far us our
people are advised, it stated that
Joseph M. Weaver, who is still at
large, and for whom rewards
amounting to upwards of three lain
died dollars are offered, was arrested
by the sheriff of this county, ou that
day, near Bruton, a station about
eight miles from this plnoo. The
statoment was a fabrication* from
whole cloth; perhaps some are in
clined t» think, for an April fool.
At any event, it is calculated to do
injustice to* the citizeus of our town,
county and state, they having offer
ed rewards for his arrest, aud which
will do no good so long as it is be
lieved that his arrest has been made.
Vigilance on the part of officers and
citizens will niaturally cease. No,
he has.not bcfOtt arrested, and wo
feci it our duty to correct the fulsff
impression that tho .above moutioaod
article will create.
On Sunday last, aftor a vory ear
nest and stiwing appeal from the
•minister to the parents present, in
bolvnlt of tho children a proposition
was made: that all those fathers and
mothers in Israel who had fully re
solved to be more careful in training
the children entrusted to thorn,
should signify such a dotei initiation
by rising to their feet. . It was no-
ticod that in response to tho proposi
tion some of the confirmed old bach
elors present, (as -well as several
young ones) mistaking tho invitation,
were the first make tho soluihn vow.

On Sunday afternoon Rev. Mr.
Boykin told tho story of “Jack and
tho Beanstalk” to tho children, and
asked that those who doubted the
truth of tho story should indicate
their disbelief by shaking their
hoads. All the children responded
by violent negative sliukos. lie
then told of Samson and the foxes,
and of Samson’s slaying tho Philis-
rines with the jawbone, rioti ‘letting
them know where the stories came
from, and asked if they believed
these storios. They again emphatic
ally expressed thoir disbelief. Ho
then turned to one of our Sunday
sell o61';sri peri n ten dent*!, a man versed
iu Bible lore, and asked him if lie
believed these tales, and Daine Ru
mor says bo indignantly protested
his unbelief in any such fables, but'
changed his opinion after he had dis
covered tho origin of tho fables.
Oar local reporter was nrdifously
engaged tho other day in searching
the nooks and crannies of his vacant,
cranium for some such bright and
newsy local ns; .“Time to plant gar
dens," “Spring 1ms at last arrive 1,”
etc. otc., when the fuct that spring
had certainly arrived was suddenly
aud gainfully enforced upon his
mind by tho vigorous bite of a vora
cious ilea. Being wrought up to a
poetical pleicnsy by the stinging
smart, lie gave vent to his over
charged feelings in the following
very beautiful paraphrase, which
we have deomod worthy o* preserva
lion.
‘Ill fares the laud, to hastening ills a prey,
Where fleas accumulate arid ne'er decay:
Typos aud type may wear well or may
fade—
Some chance may make them as soi
chance has made,
Upt fleas shall live—they always will abide;
For if destroyed, tho los3 is quick sup
plied.’

G. W.- Van Fossen, who came
through horo u few months ago and
induced some of tho citizens of our
town to lake more stock in the
“Wind Lino” railroad, that was to
have boen built through hero from
Savannah by tho 1st of last October,
lias, by his dark and dishonest deeds,
succeeded in furnishing tho officers
of the law souiothing to doi He
left Savannah last Thursday night,
much to the regret of two civil engi
neera, whose claims against tho pro
posed road lie.had in his possession,

entered one end of tho sleeper Van
Fossen slipped out at the other,
thus evading arrest. However, tho
pursuit was so hot that Van decided
to give up the papers to a friond and
skip. This is a fine predicament
for the manager (?) of the United
Sta'es Construction Company, if
such a com jinny exists, to got into.
The projectors of the proposed road
have doubtless reached the conclus
ion that it takes something more
than wind and gas to build a railroad
and that northern tramps arc
miserable failure when it comes to
begetting confidence in southern
men of souse.

One of the most effectual, ways to
build up your town is to liberally
pittronizc your home paper. No

thousands havo made a success in
business by the use of printer’s ink.
