Vorll Frederick the Great.
Frederick contributed mainly to the
* overthrow or the existing system of
the balance of power In Europe, and he
explain* frankly to his nephew why he
bad done so. “They are had polltl-
< an* who imagine that a State which
iut ffi'owt to a certain point must not
f iduk of increasing because the balance
of power assigns it* place to each.. The
balance of power is a phrase which ha*
dominated the world, because people
believed that It secured permanent
possession; but it is really a phrase
only. When Prussia has achieved her
destinies she may give herself an air
of good faith and moderation, which
suits only great States and very small
ones." On this principle he acted
throughout, and It is not too much to
/ ay that ho was chiefly responsible for
tho misery and blooduhod Inflicted on
Germany during his long reign. lie
exemplified the teaching of tho mati-
. nces alike in the Silesian wnr and the
partition of Poland. But ho doubled
the size of tho kingdom ho had inher
ited, and left behind him as a living
monument of his ruthless strategy tho
State which ho hod constructed by
treachery and falsehood. Ills method
, of operation is expounded for the in-
, struclion of his successor In bis politi-
,cal testament. One of Frederick’s
r principal devices for entrapping tho
. world Into qn exaggerated estimate
, of ,his greatness deserves notice here;
it was the. dexterous enlistment of
: literary men of mark as his pane
gyrists. Immediately after his acces
sion ho lmd sent his friend Carnes to
visit .Voltaire at Brussels, in order, as
Broglie, expresses.it, to show to tho
. whole of Europe that the crowned poet
paid his homage to literary royalty bo-
,fore any other;’* • Vet he assures his
nephew, “between ourselves," that
-these same literary'men “are a cursed
race, intolerably proud, train, full of
contempt of the great nnd thirst for*
greatness, tyrannical in their opposi
tion, Implacable enemies nnd incon
stant friends, hqrd to deal with, and
. often satirists nud f sycophants on the
same day. But they are necessary for
a Prince who means to roign despoti
cally nnd is fond of glory." And there
fore, he adds, lie always took care that
their pensions should he punctually
paid, especially Voltaire’s, for whom
ho professed tho warmest friendship:
“In truth I feared him, for I was not
suro of always treating him equally
well, and I knew that one crown loss
would bring two blows." Voltaire’s
-“Vie Prlveo" cortainly Justified tho
suspicion.

between Chicngo nnd Omaha. i“I
know him quite well. He Is known ns
Colonel Harry Ashby, proprietor of the
Metropolitan Hotel. Ho is a New

hack in 1815 or ’111, ho was educated iu
all tho brunches of a New York hood

dealers. Charles Bash, an old 'grny-

■it l. and who was one of tho first era-
phiyocs on the very first train of cars
that was ! run in America, was a friend
young Ashby, and allowed him to
on ids trait) nnd dlsposo of his
papers among tho passengers between
'!«w York and Albany. Charles died
hg.ago, but ho Is lovingly remembered
> Ashby. On his first trip on tho
Hudson Rivor road Ashley took out
1000 Now York papers nnd sold every
one. lie thought he was a rich roan,

David Dudley Field takes exception
to the nomenclature of American
pograpliy. Ho says there may be a
rout deal of fitness or unfitness in
innufe. To begin with, our continent
was misnamed. Iu selecting the name
" America" a great wrong was done
'ulumbus. The continent should have
t '.t called “ Columbia." Now Araert-
•:ms art* try Ing to make amends by sing-
uig “Hall, Columbia." Just think of
some of the wretched names selected for
places in the United States. Wo have
Tombstone, You Bet, Pop Com, Cut
Shin, Raw llido, Skunk Lake, Dirt
Tub, Jug Tavern, Sawdust, Cow Skin
and Cut Off. Almost as bad tasto was
lisphyod in copying such old names as
Babylon, Memphis, Cairo, Troy, UUcn
‘ltd Syracuse. It would have been
much belter to have preserved more of
the nomenclature of the red men.
Nothing could be more appropriate
and pleasant to the ear than Missis
sippi, Oneida, Michigan, Monongabeia,
•tuquehuna, Mohawk, Idaho and
Wyoming.
It was the policy of the good old gen

The Race for g«i«>.
r The alarming diaeaeo of this
country is nervoiw deBflity and
prostration. It goes under
many n/lines but it is essen
tially the same complaint.
Hospitals and private institu
tions for nervous patients are
crowded. The average of life
in the United States is de
creasing every year. Sudden
deaths from nervous collapse
among our business, profess
ional and public men are so
frequent as scarcely to excite
remark. The majority of sui
cides, committed without ap
parent reason, or under so-fcalled
“depression of spirits,” are
really prompted by nervous
prostration, which is a fruitful
source of insanity and crime
with all their grief and horror.
These facts are startling.
They threaten the very life of
tho nation. They assail the
springs of its power and pros
perity. They wreck manhood’s
strength and woman’s useful
ness and beauty.
Every one should know the
causes. What are they? The
answer is easy and terribly
E loin: Our vicious personal
aliits; our careless and lawless
eating and drinking; the in
tense mental and physical strain
arising from our mad race after
money, position and influonce;
the fours and struggles of pov
erty ; tho use of narcotics and
stimulants; our fashion of
turning day into night and
night into day; and, briefly,
our, desjjerate willingness to
pay any pricp for an hour’s
pleasure or success. So we
ourn life’s caudle at both ends
and fill the lunatic asylums
and tho graveyards. '
, The disease from which we
suffer and die is, in plain Eng
lish, Nervous VysjKpsia, as it
is seated in the Serves and in
the organs of Digestion, Assim
ilation and Nutrition. Ilealtliy
digestion being impeded or des-

included, id literally starved;
even wffon there is no eniaci-
otiou to tell the sad tdoiy.
Nervous prostration sends
out its warnings:—headache
in the morning; a persistent
dull heaviness or aching at the
base of tho brain; wakei ulnoss;
loss of nppetitoard disgust with
food; loss of mental energy and
interest in ordinary duties mid
business; restlessness nnd anx
iety without any assignable
reason; eructations; bad
breath; foul mucous on the
teeth; occasional giddiness;
palpitation of the heart; sal
lowness of the skin; coated
tongue and gradual failure of
strength and ambition.
The remedy is a total aban
donment of the habits and cus
toms which cause the disease
in each iudividual case, and tho
use of Shaker Extract of Boots
(ScigelV Syrup) to cure the
mischief already done. This
at remedy, prepared by the

fully upon tile-disordered stom

anodyne without the slightest

It is safe to say more nerv

of life and labor than by am
