The journal of the last meeting was read and ap proved. By Aid. Lee : Resolved, That the Health Officers in each ward in the city be required to visit every house and lot in the city, on Friday next, and report to Council, at j its next meeting, all houses, lots and cellars, that arc in ! an unhealthy condition. Resolved, That the Clerk of Council have a sufficient , number of handbills struck, notifying the citixens ol the resolution, and that the Marshal have them stuck up at all conspicuous places in the city. Adopted. I’ Aid. Woodruff'offered the following as an amendment < to the 31st section of the City Ordinance, viz: “ and at lhr same time submit to that body all the reports of the ! Health Officers made to him up to that time.” Adopted. \ By Aid. Hall: Resolved, That the City Treasurer pay i off in full the balance of a city Isold, bearing interest at 8 per cent, made by John Bethune, former Treasurer, on the 11th day of October, 1842, to Thomas McCarty, for the sum of one hundred and fifty-six dol lars, the balance of principal and interest due on the saino being sixty-eight dollars and sixty-eight cents. Adopted. By Aid. Williams: Resolved, That the committee on Engines be instructed to examine into the condition of the reservoirs, and huve any that may be out of order placed in proper condition to hold water. Resolved, That said committee inquire and report whether the contract for tilling said reservoirs has been fMfilhui. jftjul if not, whether said reservoirs con be kept fnll of water utider-ooid contract. WoodfWM proceeded to ths election of a Fire Warden Iva cancy occasioned by the removal of V. H. Cady, !Tsq. The ballots being received and examined, it appeared that A. H. Dewitt, Esq. was unanimously elected. The following accounts were presented to Council: One in favor of J. L. Barringer and Bro. of .$175 00 Whereupon, Aid. Holstoad offered the following reso lution : Resolved, That the Treasurer be instructed to pay the above account, as it is according to contract. Adopted. * Also, one in favor of A. A. Dill, of $3 ; one in favor of W. Rankin, of $2 30 ; one in favor of James Varnoy, of $244 95 ; which were ordered to be paid. -By Aid. Woodruff: Resolved, That in accordance with tho Proclamation of, the Prirsident <4 tho llniti^LSl^^, generally to lay aside all secular business, as much as possible, on the first Friday of August next, and observe the day as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer ; and that the. clergymen of all denominations be invited to hold such religious services during the day, in their respective churches, as they may deem becoming and most appro priate for the occasion.
