The Niagara has arrived. , She brings Liver
pool dates to the 25th ult.
By this arrival we have intelligence that will
be heard with regret by all the friends of Hun
gary, and of civil freedom and human rights
throughout the civilized world.
Our dispatch announces that the Hungarians
have at length been totally defeated, and have
submitted to their conquerors.

Liverpool, Aug. 25.—The Cotton market
has been active during the week under review—
the sales having amounted to 07,000 bales.—

Banks of New Orleans. —By a recent state
ment of the condition of the New Orleans banks,
up to the end of July, it appears that their circu
lation was $4,709,000, with specie on hand to
the amount of $0,588,000. The liabilities (ex,/
elusive of capital) are set down at $12,829,000,
and resources at $17,407,000. The Delta re
marks, that this statement places the New Or
leans banks in a‘very strong position.’
It has been suggested that the spot in Cali
fornia where Mrs. Farnham’s you.ng lady ad

Louisville, Ky. a desperate conflict came off at
the old stove store on Third street, between the
free negro proprietor and a slave employed in a
neighboring house.
