Another Car-Hook Murder in
New York. —Some (Jays aao Mr.
•-rcdfcje Fields, Supcrintendeill bf tlie
Third Avenue railroad, discharged
Lewis Jensen, a driver. Jensen be
came impressed with the idea that
Charles 11. Schofield, the starter at
the depot, was the cause of his dis
missal. He swore to be revenged.
On Friday evening last, while Mr.
Schofield was sitting in the starter’s
office, Jensen, who was drunk, walked
into the oflioe with a car hook in his
hand. He began a tirade of abuse,
and was ordered out by Mr. Schofield,
liefusing to leave, Schofield attempt
ed to eject him, whereupon Jensen
struck Schofield on the head with the
car-hook felling him to the floor and
splitting his skull. Jensen was locked
up in the Fifty-ninth street police
station. Mr. Schofield was taken to
his residence, where at last accounts
he was in a precarious condition witli
little hopegpf recovery.

Advices' from India report that
the cholera is raging fiercely in many
of tile-towns throughout the empire.
The greatest consternation and alarm
prevail among tiro inhabitants of the
small and thickly settledjtowns, who,
fearing an epidemic, are hastening to
the settlements where the disease lias
ink yet appeared.
fin the city t Lahore, the cital
the Punjab, where, from its f%thy
condition, narrow streets, |nd
crowded houses, , the disease kas
appeared in a most malignant foiV*,
thousands have been carried off, and
i general panic prevails among the
people. At Maenmer, also, the rav
ages of the disease have been terrible.
The authorites are exercising every
means in their power to check the
process of the terrible malady.
Rust and Caterpillar. Both
these pests of the cotton farmer are
upon us. The rust is not likely to
seriously damage the crop in this sec
tion unless it be in late cotton. The
caterpillar works vwith such fearful
rapidity that there is no telling what
damage it may do. Lovick Travice
reports that they are eating his up
terribly fist. Ben Lockett tells that
it will cut off lus crop one-half. There
is no doubt but what the plague is
general in Georgia, and that it will
seriously diminish the crop.
[ Griffin Star.
Rust in Cotton—Yield Seriously
Injured. —Through our friends from
the country, says the Griffin News,we
get distressing accounts of the injury
being done to cotton by rust. On
some farms the loss is estimated at
half the promise one month ago;
while other places are almost entirely
exempt. We regret very much to
hear of any disaster at this time, as
high hopes had been entertained of a
large and profitable crop through this
section of the country.
A California distinguished minister of
the gospel, but now a resident of an East
ern city, was frequently heard to remark
while a youth at college, that he would
never marry a woman who had “loved
another manthat ha wanted the “first
warm gush of woman's lovct.’’ He mar
ried a woman with two “sets” of childien.
An Indiana man took a friend homo to
tea the other evening without giving his
wife notice. That night she talked herself
into a paralysis of the tongue. Now all
the men in the neighborhood are sending
for friends and taking them home at all
hours.
SAVSffMr EVENING MIRROR.
SHALL WE MEET A GAIN.
r The following is said to bo one of
tbe most brilliant articles written by
the lamented George ]). Prentice :
“The fiat of nature is inexorable.
There is no appeal for relief from the
great law which dooms us to the
dust. We flourish and fade as the
leaves of the forest, and the flowers
that bloom and wither in a day have no
frailer hold upon life than the migkt
ist monarch that ever shook the earth
with his footsteps. Generations of
men will appear and disappear as the
grass, and the multitude that throngs
the world to-day will disappear as the
footsteps on the shore. Aten seldom
think of the great event of deatli un
til the shadows fall across their own
pathway, hiding from their eyes the
faces of loved ones whose living
smile was the sunlight of their exist
ence. Death is tbe antagonist of life,
and tbe cold thought of the tomb is
the skeleton of all feasts. We do
not want to go through the dark val
ley, although its dark passages may
lead to paradise; we do not want to
lay down in the damp grave, even
with princes as bedfellows. In the
beautiful drama of lon, the hope of
immortality, so elegantly uttered by
the death-devoted Greek, finds deep
response in every thoughtful soul.
When about to yield his young ex
istence as a sacrifice to fate, his Cle
mantha asks if they should meet
again, to which he replies; ‘I have
asked that dreadful question of the
hills that look eternal —of the clear
streams that flow forever—of the
stars among whose fields of azure my
raised spirit has walked in glory. All
were dumb; but as I gazed upon thy
living face I feel that there is some
thing in the love that mantles through
its beauty that cannot wholly perish.
We shall meet again, Clemantha.’ ”
