ALL AMERICAN CHRISTMAS
An "All-American Christmas” program was presented at Banks County Elementary School by the fifth grade chorus and fourth
grade classes. A large number of family and friends attended the musical presentation. Music specialist for the fifth grade chorus
and fourth grade classes is Theresa Barefoot. Actors were directed by Linda West.
ORGANIZES TOY DRIVE
Two Banks County Elementary School fifth graders, Cheyenne
Campbell and Keyla Baugh, organized a toy drive for the
patients at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The
students at BCES donated enough toys and games to fill five
large boxes.
BOE meeting schedule given
The Banks County Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. on the
following dates in the Banks County Board of Education conference
room: Jan. 22, Feb. 19, March 17, April 21, May 19, June 16, July 21,
Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.
WATER WARRIORS AT BCES
The Banks County Elementary School water conservation group, Water Warriors, met with Steve
Reece, who is the Banks County water, waste water director. He shared with this group of stu
dents how his department works and offered various conservation techniques which have been
implemented in the county.
Essay contest announced by Congressman Broun
Congressman Paul Broun has announced that he is
holding an essay contest for 10 th District high school
students.
The “Pledge” to the Georgia Flag states, “I pledge alle
giance to the Georgia Flag and to the principles for which
it stands: wisdom, justice, and moderation.” These three
virtues are listed across the banner that wraps around the
arch on the Georgia Seal.
This essay contest allows any 10 th Congressional
District High School Student to write an essay of up to
250 words on one of those virtues and why the virtue is
important to them as a young person and to Georgia as
a state.
The contest rules are as follows:
•Submit all essays by e-mail to: essay@paulbroun.
com.
•Essays must be typed, preferably in MS Word, double
spaced, and no more then 250 words.
•Include contact information and write one paragraph
at the end of the essay about your favorite high school
teacher or administrator and how they have influenced
your life.
•Students writing winning essays will receive a flag,
a copy of the Constitution, and a signed photo with the
Congressman and their favorite teacher or administrator.
The deadline is Feb. 26

HOLIDAY PROGRAM AT BCES
The Banks County Elementary School fifth grade chorus and fourth grade classes take their bows
after performing "An All-American Christmas.” The program included visits by the three kings,
elves, reindeer and Santa. Actors were directed by Linda West and the fifth grade chorus and
fourth grade classes were directed by Theresa Barefoot.
Georgia Fund Scholarship assists GED students
The new Georgia Fund Scholarship pays the $95 test
ing fee for all adult learners who live in designated rural
counties across Georgia, including Banks County.
To qualify for this scholarship, participants must:
•reside in Banks County.
•be enrolled in GED classes at the Banks County Adult
Learning Center.
•meet the minimum attendance requirement (12
hours).
•achieve the status of “Test Readiness” (Level 6) on a
skills test and GED practice test.

lar, business hours (Mondays through Wednesdays, 8:30
- 5:30, and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
The Georgia Fund Scholarship will be offered to
qualifying students one time only. Students must pay
for second attempts at passing the GED.
