Library receives 'We the People
Pursuit of Happiness' bookshelf grant
The Banks County Public Library received the “We the People: Pursuit of
Happiness” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the
American Library Association.
The grant included a collection of 15 classic titles, four titles in Spanish
translation and a CD of traditional music for young readers that are related
to the theme ‘Pursuit of Happiness.’ Young people are encouraged to read
and make a display or write an essay about what the ‘Pursuit of Happiness’
means to them.
For more information, call 706-677-3164.
Substance abuse topic at seminar
The White County Meth Task Force, a private, non-profit organization formed
in 2006, will speak at a seminar open to the general public at the Redemption
Outreach Ministries in Banks County Wednesday, March 12, from 6-8 p.m. The
Task Force will provide the latest information on substance abuse in the area,
and help families determine the symptoms of a family member addicted to some
form of illegal drugs or prescription drugs.
The Meth Task Force was begun in White County in 2006, and is a commu
nity coalition consisting of community volunteers, treatment providers and law
enforcement officers who have made over 200 outreach presentations to approxi
mately 35,000 people in Georgia since its inception. Through their contacts,
many families and children have been helped by the White County community.
The organization is chaired by Melisa Fincher, RN and a White County Public
Health Nurse. Sharon Lee is the Executive Director of the organization, and
Heather Boswell serves as Assistant Executive Director.
The White County Meth Task Force has just been designated by the Georgia
Alliance for Drug-Endangered Children as one of 25 pilot community programs
in the state who will work with drug-endangered children in White and Lumpkin
Counties. The Task Force was chosen because of the individual as well as col
lective dedication, talent, experience and desire to affect positive change in the
lives of drug-endangered children and their families. The organization also helps
recovering addicts to be contributing members of the White County community.
A family struggling with substance abuse issues is welcome to call the Task
Force Information Line at 706-969-0397 for help.
Redemption Outreach Ministries is located at 603 Historic Homer Highway;
the Banks County community is urged to attend this most important seminar.
For additional information, contact the White County Task Force office at
706-865-2378.
