4-H COMPETE AT DISTRICT
Nine Banks County 4-H returned from the Northeast District Project Achievement competition
with honors in their project areas. Junior 4-H competing were: Courtney Gailey, Megan Boling,
Jared Clark, Dee Wiley, Kristi Addison, Brianna Carlan, Trina Allen, Emily Angel and Cassandra
Whisnant.
4-H win district project honors
Nine Banks County 4-H returned
from the Northeast District Project
Achievement competition with
honors in their project areas.
Held February 29 through March
2, the district meeting at Rock
Eagle 4-H Center was attended by
over 700 Junior and Senior 4-H
from 39 counties in the Northeast
District.
Junior 4-H competing were
Courtney Gailey who placed first
in the Entomology project. Megan
Boling placed third in the Pork
Project.
Also receiving high plac-
ings while representing Banks
County were: Jared Clark in the
Performing Arts Vocal Project; Dee
Wiley in the Public Speaking proj
ect, Kristi Addison in the Human
Development project, Brianna
Carlan in the Performing Arts Other
Instrumental project, Trina Allen in
the Food Fare project, Emily Angel
in the General Recreation proj
ect and Cassandra Whisnant in the
Public Speaking project.
Courtney Gailey, daughter of
Michael and Gina Gailey, and
Megan Boling, daughter of Greg
and Amy Boling, were elected as
board members on the Northeast
District 4-H Junior Board of
Directors. They officially assumed
office this weekend. Their duties
for the following year will include:
attending Georgia 4-H Officers
Training in July, planning the state
wide Junior Leadership Conference
in November, presiding at Junior
Conference and Junior Senior
District Project Achievement in
March of 2009, attending Junior
Rally in May and many more dis
trict opportunities and activities.
Attending Project Achievement
with the 4-H were Gina K. Gailey,
county extension 4-H agent, and
Haley Crumley, county extension
4-H program assistant.
4-H is the youth program of the
University of Georgia Cooperative

PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST
Kellie Brown (right) and Samantha Steverson recently competed in the area public speaking contest held
at Hart County High School. Steverson placed third in the creed speaking event among six contestants.
Brown placed first in extemporaneous public speaking and advanced to the region contest where she
placed second. Brown will now compete at the state FFA contest in April.

Sixty-four Banks County
Cloverleaf 4-H traveled to Rock
Eagle 4-H Center to participate in
District Project Achievement on
Saturday, February 16 and they all
came back as winners.
“They’re all really winners,” said
Gina Gailey, Banks County 4-H
coordinator. “It took a lot of work
and practice for each young person
to prepare for this event.” Each
fourth, fifth and sixth grade 4-H
gave an illustrated talk or demon
stration on a topic they chose. Most
demonstrations last about four min
utes, and the 4-H use two or three
posters.
4-H choose from over 60 projects
for their demonstration.
“Many people may think 4-H is
just cows and cooking, but it’s so
much more than that,” Gailey said.
“Today’s projects include interna
tional, veterinary science, air sci
ence, computers, water conserva
tion, photography, public speaking,
plant and soils, performing arts, and
safety, just to name a few.”
Competition for Cloverleaf 4-H
ends at district competition, but it
prepares them for more advanced
competition as they get older, Gailey
added.

Sixth Grade 4-H: Angel James,

Anderson. Hannah Hester, and Leah
Coley.
Volunteer and teen leaders
helped 4-H prepare for DPA and
some attended with the youth.

Jared Clark, Brianna Carlan, Joey

Courtney Gailey, McKenna Rylee,
Megan Boling and Lauren Hill.
4-H started in 1902 with corn
clubs for boys and tomato clubs for
girls. Since then, the University
of Georgia Cooperative Extension
Service’s 4-H and Youth program
has helped thousand of Georgia
youth learn by doing to make their
best better.
