Outdoors With Skipper
Pitching in to help restock the trout supply
T he previous main stock
ing of trout had taken
place some seven years
ago, with the fish growing up to
be big ones over that period of
time.
Then the drought came last sum
mer and many of the fish died.
Soaring buzzards overhead, the
smell of dead fish lodged against
a log or other snags, were some of
the indicators.
Wanting to help out the fish
ing situation, a group of us met
last Friday morning to await the
stocker trout truck coming out of
North Carolina. The weather was
beautiful and warm. I certainly
had hoped it would be just that.
Arriving in time for lunch was
the senior member, Bennie Smith,
accompanied by Rick Hewell. Our
kind hosts, who allow us to fish
their private portion of the river,
along with their dog, Charley, and
cat, Bo, were also present.
Sitting
down to a
lunch of bar-
b-que, cole
slaw, chips,
pickles and
a delicious
pound cake
that my wife
made, made
the noon
time perfect.
We swapped
some fishing
stories, and laughed a lot. I tried
to get some secrets on fishing out
of Bennie, but they were hard to
come by. I did get the size Rapala
and color he likes to use. That was
a victory.
Hoping the stocker truck would
be able to find us, we kept a sharp
lookout. It arrived around 12:30,
and Tom Ort, who runs the Tellico
Trout Farms in North Carolina ,
joined in a bit of lunch. I knew if
he was hungry, he wouldn’t be in
such a cooperative mood, com
pared to having a full stomach.
Tom is a great guy, and a great
help with getting the fish to the
river. He was the head of stocking
for the state of North Carolina,
before going to work with a retail
stocking hatchery.
As we headed to the river,
my son, Shawn, and my grand
son, Hunter, arrived to help.
Transferring the silvery, shining,
10 to 12-inch trout was a fun
experience.
Seeing them scoot off to hid
ing places in their new home,
reminded me of the times a couple
of years ago, when the fish were
plentiful. Hopefully, that will
repeat itself, as the fish grow to be
five pounds or bigger.
With our task completed, as we
placed varying amounts of fish at
different spots along the river, we
headed back for a moment of rest,
and a second piece of cake, along
with a cold drink. It was time to
head home after a great day.
At church, one of the fellows
showed me a picture of a five
pound trout he had caught on
Saturday up at the Soque river.
Going from fish to turkeys, sure
enough I had to watch Sunday
afternoon from my house, as a
gobbler, all filled out, strutted
around a group of hens. Maybe,
I can get him before the season is
over.
Don’t forget trout season opens
this coming Saturday for all the
seasonal streams. Give me a call
with your outdoor story.

Varsity Baseball
Leopards defeat Dawson on road
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Banks County High School base
ball coach Joe Lord has said it will
be a key for his team to have success
on the road this spring in subregion
contests.
The Diamond Leopards have now
posted wins in their two previous
road games
in subregion
play. BCHS
defeated
Dawson
County
11-6 Monday as Jeff Smith earned
the win working 3.1 wins in relief.
Smith allowed no earned runs and
recorded four strikeouts.
“We were able to get out to an
BCHS
Dawson
11
~6
early lead and play in front,” Lord
said. “We capitalized on some of
their defensive miscues and con
trol problems in the first couple of
innings.”
Defensively, the Leopards made
just one error in the game.
BCHS jumped out to a 7-0 lead
and then held on for the victory.
“Good teams are going to rally
and you have to be able to answer,”
Lord said. “We were able to do that
in this game. I was proud of our
team. It was good to get another
win under our belts and we’re going
to continue to take it one game at
a time. We try not to get too up or
too down because you have to stay
level-headed in baseball. We have
been working hard and we look to
continue to improve.”
Offensively, Justin Gibbs was
2-for-4 with three RBI while Bill
Redmon was 2-for-4 with two runs
scored.
Tyler Hulsey turned in a 2-for-5
performance while Alex Gailey had
an eagle eye drawing four walks.
Gailey also stole four bases and
scored three runs.
Kasey Hudgins started the game
pitching the first 3.2 innings record
ing two strikeouts.
“Kasey held them in check and did
a good job of throwing strikes,” Lord
said. “Jeff looked strong and contin
ues to get better on the mound. Their
work was key for us.”
Junior Varsity Baseball
Leopards dominant in 15-0 victory
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Banks County High School
junior varsity baseball team put a
complete game together in a 15-0
win against Rabun Gap earlier this
month.
The JV Leopards got a strong
pitching performance from Seth
McEntire and also had a big day at
the plate as they made short work of
Rabun Gap in four innings.
BCHS scored five runs in the first
inning before adding two more in
the bottom of the second. The JV
Leopards slammed the door with
eight more in the bottom of the
third.
“I thought we came out ready
to play,” said BCHS coach Brent
Howell. “I was very happy with
all phases of the game. Seth threw
lots of strikes and used his defense
behind him. He only had to throw
51 pitches. That is a very effective
game on the mound.”
At the plate, several JV Leopards
had big performances. Kieffer
Hellmeister was 2-for-3 with a tri
ple, double, five RBI and two runs
scored. Eli Autry was 2-for-3 with
two doubles, two runs scored and
RBI.
Tim Cox was 2-for-2 with three
RBI and a run scored. Jared Clark
and Cameron King both had doubles
as did Kris Hellmeister who also
drove in two runs and had two RBI.
Jason Sexton, Jessy Hudgins, Brian
Mathis and McEntire all had singles
in the dominant performance.
Andrew Berry drew a walk.
“Our defense also played extreme
ly well,” Howell said. “I was able to
get lots of players in and everyone
played very well.”
BCHS Class of 1995 establishing memorial scholarship
The Banks County High School
Class of 1995 is establishing a
scholarship in memory of classmate
Shawn Smith.
Smith, who was a standout athlete
for the BCHS Leopards, died fol
lowing a car accident last summer
while attending a basketball camp in
Alabama with members of the North
Oconee County High School team.
The annual football game between
BCHS and North Oconee has been
named the Shawn Smith Bowl in his
honor.

Only $29
to anyone who has never
been to a chiropractor
before (or hasn't been
in a long time).
Dear Friend,
My name is Dr. Kevin L. Strohman. We are
celebrating our 2 year anniversary in
Commerce, Georgia. To show my appreciation,
I have agreed to “give away” (to anyone who
asks for it) $225 worth of my services for only
$29. That's right $29.
We have had an overwhelming response to
our new office and have already helped a lot
of people feel better and live healthier, more
productive lives through Chiropractic Care.
And now, I'd like to introduce even more
people to the many benefits our profession has
to offer.
For instance, chiropractic care may be able
to help you if you are suffering from any of the
following conditions:
• Migraine headaches
• Numbness in arms and legs
• Lower back pain
• Muscle Spasms
...And a host of other problems ranging
from dizziness to ringing in the ears.
These symptoms can be caused whenever
the vertebrae in your spine are out of
alignment, because these “misalignments”
directly affect your nervous system.
Fortunately, many of these and other similar
afflictions may be relieved or eliminated by
proper chiropractic treatments.
So if you have always wanted to “check
out” chiropractic and see what it can do for
you, now is the best time to do so because only
$29 will get you all of the services I normally
charge new patients $225 for.
• In-depth consultation about your health
and well-being
• Complete chiropractic spinal exam
• Full set of specialized x-rays to determine
if a misalignment in your spine is causing your
problem. (Note: Nobody gives these kinds of
x-rays free. They would cost you at least $100.)
• Analysis of your x-rays and spinal exam
to evaluate what needs to be done to correct
your problem.
• Answers to all your questions concerning
chiropractic care and what it can do for you.
What are you waiting for? Call us for an
appointment Today! 706-335-2225. Tell the
receptionist you'd like to come in for the
special New Patient Introductory
Examination. Don't delay - relief is only
minutes away.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kevin L. Strohman
