High School Tennis
Leopards suffer tough loss to Fannin Co.
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Banks County High School
varsity boys tennis team now finds
its back against the wall when it
comes to the subregion race this
spring.
The Leopards dropped a 3-2
contest to visiting Fannin County
last week for their second loss in
subregion play. Barring something
unforeseen, BCHS would only be
able to finish third in the subregion.
“It was a tough loss,” said Leopard
coach Mike Ruth. “We were very
close to winning it.”
BCHS fell at No. 1 and No. 2
singles but recorded a win at No. 3
singles as Garret Hayes took a 6-1,
6-2 victory.
The No. 1 doubles match went
down to the wire before Nathan
Ward and Jacob Westmoreland fell
4-6, 5-6.
Chase Minish and Viet Pham did
win at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-0.
The BCHS boys did defeat East
Jackson 4-1 Thursday in a match
which did not count toward the sub
region standings.
Kyle Walker won 8-2 at No. 1
singles with Trey Martin recording a
8-1 win at No. 2 singles.
In doubles play, Ward and
Westmoreland won 8-3 while Minish
and Pham won 8-2.
Clay Carroll and Todd Parks won
an exibition match as did Alex Banks
and C.J. Pilcher. Charles Frinks
earned a tie in his exibition match.
“We played well in our matches
this season against East Jackson and
Dawson County so maybe we can
finish third,” Ruth said. “We are just
young. We only have two players
who have much past experience and
one of them is playing singles this
year after competing in doubles last
season.”
Ruth said Sunday he is looking
into whether the match from earlier
this season with Rabun County will
count in the subregion standings.
The BCHS coach said he believed
teams were supposed to play sets in
subregion matches which counted in
the standings.
In the match between the schools,
the teams played a Pro 8 match.
BCHS is scheduled to host Rabun
County Thursday but Ruth was going
to look into the situation involv
ing the earlier match. If that match
does not count, Ruth said he would
be willing to take his team back
to Rabun County for Thursday’s
match.
“I know when Fannin County and
East Jackson played Rabun County,
the matches were best two-of-three,”
Ruth said. “It seems like we were
supposed to play that format as
well.”
