The Banks County Middle School
girls tennis team opened the new sea
son with victories against Stephens
County and Lakeview.
The middle school Lady Leopards
defeated Stephens County 3-2 and
Lakeview 5-0.
The BCMS girls are led by No. 1
singles player Kara Murphy, who
has held that spot since her sixth
grade year.
Now in the eighth grade, Murphy
has lost only once during her time
competing for BCMS. She went
undefeated last season and will be
even tougher to beat this spring,
according to her coach Heidi Moon.
“Kara is playing for USTA and is
ranked 129th in the state of Georgia
for ages 14 and under,” Moon said.
“With possible tournaments com
ing up, she could soon be in the top
100.”
The BCMS coach said the Lady
Leopards are looking strong for
2008.
In the win against Stephens
County, Murphy won 8-0 at No. 1
singles while McKenna Rylee won
5-3 at No. 3 singles.
Gabby Grisham and Lauren Carter
also won at No. 2 doubles 8-3.
BCMS made a clean sweep against
Lakeview with Murphy winning 8-0
at No. 1 singles.
The remainder of the matches
were doubles. The BCMS No. 1
doubles team of Anna Gailey and
Haley Hill won 8-5 while the No.
2 doubles team of McKenna Rylee
and Sabrina Porter won 8-2.
Gabby Grisham and Lauren Carter
won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles with Macy
Milford and Megan Culbert taking a
8-1 victory in No. 4 doubles action.
The new season has also seen some
standout play from the BCMS boys
tennis team. While the Leopards
fell in their matches to Stephens
County and Lakeview, there were
some bright moments, Moon said.
“We are already improving,” the
coach said. “We have some new
talent this year. We only had a few
players return.”
Jake Schaefer is the No. 1 singles
player for the boys and he is cur
rently undefeated.
“He will be a great competitor
against all of his opponents,” Moon
said.
Schaefer scored the lone win
against Stephens County with an
8-5 victory. Schaefer also recorded
an 8-0 win against Lakeview.
Tyler Hubbard and Brandon Linn
took an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles
against Lakeview.
