JoAnn Lally
JoAnn Lally, formerly of
Homer, died Thursday,
March 20, 2008, at her res
idence, following an eight
year battle with lung cancer.
Born in Homer in 1942,
the daughter of Lucilla Bell
and the late John Olan Bell.
She moved to California to
attend high school, graduat
ing from San Francisco State
University. Following gradua
tion, she became an American
Airlines flight attendant and
traveled extensively around
the world. She had a mar
velous way with plants and
was an active member of
the East Greenbush Garden
Club for 35 years. For over
30 years she was part of
the Rensselaer County
Master Gardener Program
and in 2000 was honored
as “Master Gardener of the
Year”. She loved competitive
tennis and was a member
of both World Team Tennis
and USTA teams. She was a
lifelong member of the Holy
Spirit Church Altar Rosary
Society and for many years
headed the church’s flower
committee.
Mrs. Lally was preceded in
death by an infant son, Sean
Joseph.
Survivors in addition to her
mother, include her husband,
Thomas Lally; son, Terence;
daughter and son-in-law,
Rosemary and Gregory
Wilson; and grandchildren,
Sydney Rose and Thomas
Gregory Wilson.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, March 26, at the
Church of the Holy Spirit in
East Greenbush, N.Y. Burial
was at St. Peter’s Cemetery
in Saratoga Springs.

Nathaniel Howard
Nathaniel W. Howard, 68,
of Maysville, formerly of
Cleveland, died Saturday,
March 22, 2008, following an
extended illness.
He was born on June 27,
1939, the son of the late
John David and Carrie Nix
Howard. He was a farmer for
many years and was preced
ed in death by his first wife,
Shirley Howard.
Survivors include his wife,
Carol Howard, Maysville;
daughters and sons-in-
law, Becky and Roy Hay,
Cleveland, Elizabeth and
Keith Taylor, Cornelia, Karen
Thompson, Habersham;
sons and daughters-in-law,
Kenneth and Cheryl Howard,
John and Mandy Howard, all
of Gainesville, Steve Leith
Howard, Talmo; brother and
sister-in-law, Donald and Kay
Howard, Habersham; sisters-
in-law, Dorthy Howard,
Gillsville, and Sally Howard,
Cleveland; 18 grandchildren;
and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, March 25, in the cha
pel of Barrett Funeral Home
with the Revs. Royce Winters
and T. John Dell officiating.
Burial was in the Lebanon
United Methodist Church
Cemetery in Gillsville.

Chadrick Williams
Chadrick R. Williams, 31, of
Commerce, died Wednesday,
March 26, 2008.
He was the son of Brenda
Williams of
Commerce
and Gene and
Joan Williams
of Commerce.
Mr. Williams
was preceded
in death by
grandparents,
Gene Willia
Sr., Clara Mae -
Williams and
Eugene Pace, and an uncle,
Joseph E. Pace.
He was a graduate of Banks
County High School and
attended Georgia Southern
College and the University
of Georgia. He was a graduate
of Gupton-Jones Mortuary
College in Decatur. He was
also a lance corporal with
the Reserves of the United
States Marine Corps.
Survivors in addition to
his parents, include a grand
mother, Mary Williams
Steed, Commerce; and a
fiance, Elanore Matthewson,
Fredericksburg, Va.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, March 29, at Webbs
Creek Baptist Church in
Banks County with the Revs.
Phil Parks and James Dumas
officiating. Burial was at the
church cemetery.

Commerce, was in charge of
arrangements.

Barbara Ann Lee
Barbara Ann Lee, 52, of
Gillsville, died Saturday,
March 29, 2008.
Born on March 1, 1956, she
was the daughter of the late
Johnny Clifford and Ruby
Norris Lee.
Survivors include sisters,
Clara Hansford, Toccoa,
Loretta Carter, Pendergrass,
Rita Wilson, Gainesville;
brothers, Johnny C. Lee
Jr., Commerce, Larry Lee,
Murrayville, and Leroy
Lee, Pendergrass; compan
ion, William Ronnie Dale,
Gillsville; and a host of niec
es and nephews.
Private family services will
be held at a later date. The
body was cremated.

Billy Joe McDuffie
Billy Joe McDuffie, 72, of
Cornelia, died Friday, March
28, 2008, at his residence,
following a sudden illness.
Born in Hart County
on April 18, 1935, he was
the son of the late Boyd
and Vida Allen McDuffie.
He was a logger and since
retirement, he was known
as the “watermelon man”.
He was also a charter mem
ber of Crossroads Baptist
Church. Mr. McDuffie was
preceded in death by sis
ters, Barbara Ann Jordan
and Doris Campbell; broth
ers, Leon McDuffie, Grady
McDuffie, Jack McDuffie,
Jimmy McDuffie and Willis
McDuffie.
Survivors are the mother of
his children, Bernice Gough,
Lula; daughter and son-in
law, Awa “Coot” and Michael
Martin, Gainesville; son,
Joe McDuffie, Lula; grand
children, Billy Joe McDuffie
Jr. and Jonathan McDuffie,
both of Lula, Gin Martin
and Michelle Martin, both of
Gainesville; six great-grand
children; and best friend and
neighbor, Kenneth Humanus,
Cornelia.
Funeral services were
held Sunday, March 30, at
Crossroads Baptist Church
with the Revs. Jim Ellis and
Kenneth Pilcher officiat
ing. Burial was in Morrison
Gardens, Skitts Mountain.

Charles Miller
Charles Max Miller II, 78,
of Cornelia, died Monday,
March 31, 2008, at the Lanier
Park Hospital.
He was born on May 31,
1929, the son of the late
Charles Max, Sr.
and Cleo Barr
Miller. He
was
a member of the Cornelia
United Methodist Church,
where he was a teacher and
member of the Men’s Bible
Class for 22 years. He was
a member of the Cornelia
Masonic Lodge #92 F.&A.M.
and the Yarrab Shrine Temple,
a member of the Cornelia
Kiwanis Club, where he was
a member of the Board of
Directors and was past pres
ident. He was a scout master
for a Boy Scouts of America
Troop #24 in Cornelia for
15 years. Mr. Miller was a
veteran, having served in the
United States Navy during
the Korean conflict. He was
preceded in death by his
wife, Jane Golden Miller.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Julia Miller, Knoxville,
Tenn.; sons, Charles Max
Miller, III, Cornelia, and
Christopher Mark Miller,
Jasper; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, April 2, 2008,
at the Cornelia United
Methodist Church with the
Rev. Charles Walker offici
ating. Burial was in Yonah
Memorial Gardens.

Wilton Whitlock
Wilton Julian Whitlock, 66,
of Demorest, died Monday,
March 31, 2008, at Kindred
Hospital, following a brief
illness.
He was born in Banks
County on April 12, 1941, the
son of Bobbie Nix Whitlock
of Demorest and
the late Julius
“Buck” Whitlock,
and was retired as a main
tenance director with the
Habersham County School
System with 25 years of ded
icated service. Mr. Whitlock
was a veteran, having served
in the United States Navy
and was a lifetime member
of the V.F.W. Post #7720. He
also enjoyed the outdoors,
loved ones stated.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include sisters and
brothers-in-law, Sharon and
David Baskin, Cornelia, and
Martha and Andrew Eller,
Demorest; two nieces and
two nephews.
Funeral services were
held Wednesday, April 2,
in the chapel of McGahee-
Griffin & Stewart Funeral
Home with the Rev. Mickey
Umbehant officiating.
Burial was in Mt. Carmel
Baptist Church Cemetery
in Banks County with full
military honors provided by
the Rabun County D.A.V.
Chapter #15 and Habersham
County American Legion
Post #84.

Larry Spencer
Christopherson, 77, of
Demorest, died Thursday,
March 27, 2008, at his resi
dence.
He was born on July 8,
1930, in Minneapolis, Minn.,
the son of the
late Arthur and
Pearl Spencer
Christopherson.
He was retired from Internal
Revenue Service with 18
years of service and was a
member at the Living Faith
Sanctuary. He was a veteran,
having served in the United
States Air Force with 21
years honorable service. Mr.
Christopherson was preced
ed in death by a daughter,
Marilyn Robinson Garrison.
Survivors include his wife,
Olivia Elizabeth Patrick
Christopherson, Demorest;
daughters and sons-in-law,

Gladys Payne Echols, 98, of
Cornelia, died Friday, March
28, 2008, at her residence.
She was born in Hall
County on May 31, 1909, the
daughter of the late Walker
and Nancy Wheeler Echols.
She was a member of the
Belton Baptist Church and a
member of the Grant Reeves
VFW Post #7720 Auxiliary.
Mrs. Echols was preceded
in death by her husband,
Charles Payne; a brother, E.E.
Echols; and a sister, Cirene
Barrett.
Survivors include daugh
ters, Marvine Tatum,
Cornelia, Janette Brown and
Winnie Lou Cox, both of
Atlanta; sister, Boyd McEver,
Lula; six grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and neph
ews.

held Saturday, March 29,
at Belton Baptist Church
Cemetery with the Rev.
