Special tribute offered to Northeast
Georgia’s fallen soldiers
Tanger Outlets, with the aid of
several area public officials, said
“Thank You" to US Troops Saturday
morning during a special ceremony
on the mall property.
As the culmination of a month
long campaign to encourage Tanger
shoppers to fdl out a “Thank You"
card to the troops during their shop
ping visit, in a campaign entitled
“Thousands of Thanks," Tanger
officials hosted a 40-minute cer
emony that was open to the public.
Tanger General Manager, Mark
Valentine addressed the audience,
“There is one thing we can always
be extra proud of ... and that is the
US Soldier. Over the generations,
decade after decade, US Troops
have been the best, the brightest
and they have the heart that sepa
rates them from all others, instilled
by liberty and freedom. Right up
to the current war on terrorism...
our troops continue to do amazing
things, and for that we stand in awe
and respect."
US Congressman, Paul Broun, Jr.
was the special guest speaker for
the event. According to Broun, “We
commit our steadfast support to our
troops and their families who are
left behind. God forbid that we ever
tire of paying tribute to those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The greatest way that we can honor
their legacy is being ever vigilant to
protect the freedoms that our mili
tary has fought and died for. It is
up to us to do so. We must never let
them down in their sacrifice.”
Several local and regional gov
ernment officials then took part
in a special tribute to Northeast
Georgia's fallen heroes. Each offi
cial read a short narrative about
each and every soldier from the
area that has paid the ultimate price.
Participating in the tribute was:
State Senator, Nancy Schaefer; State
Representative, Jeanette Jamieson;
State Representative, Tommy
Benton; Banks County Commission
Chair, Gene Hart; Jackson County
Commission Chair, Pat Bell; and
Jackson County Commissioner,
Jody Thompson.
The most poignant moment
occurred when the very last of 19
tributes, read by Thompson, hon
ored Maysville native Army Staff
Sargeant Shaun J. Whitehead
who died in April of 2008 in
Iskandariya, Iraq. Whitehead’s
mother, Rebecca, and sister, Amber
were in attendance and were recog
nized. Valentine explained to the
audience that plaques were made
for each of these soldiers and they
will be hung as part of a special
wall presentation at Tanger as a
lasting tribute. The ceremony began
with a prayer offered by Reverend
Troy Herbert, from Hudson River
Baptist Church in Banks County
and the singing of the National
Hark Valentine of Tanger Outlets spoke at the salute to the
troops Saturday. Officials from Jackson and Banks counties
spoke, as well as Congressman Paul Broun.
Anthem by Sheila Parnell, a teach
er at Baldwin Elementary School
and a resident of Commerce. The
Pledge of Allegiance was lead by
Sergeant Chris Barrett, from the
Alpha Company 197 of the Military
Intelligence Battalion and the 513th
M.I. Brigade, currently stationed in
Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia.
Barrett, a Jackson County native,
has served tours in both Afghanistan
and Iraq.
The cards and letters collected
nationally by Tanger Outlet Centers
will be shipped to US military bases

Making a difference one community at a time.
The NEW Waste Management
With a massive North American presence that includes lots of
heavy-duty vehicles and hard-working individuals, is it any
wonder that the NEW Waste Management is such an active
member of this community?
Of course, we owe our reputation for making a difference to
the partnerships we’ve developed with each community we
serve, to enhance its quality of life.
We’re especially proud of our vigorous and growing
community relations programs. We created them to support
local and nationwide community organizations - including
neighborhood watch programs, school activities and public
lands and parks projects - that work to make the communities
we share better places to live.
The NEW Waste Management embraces the responsibilities of
a good corporate citizen by channeling our resources into
local education, community vitality and environmental
awareness efforts. It’s another way we’re making a difference.
One community at a time. From everyday collection to
environmental protection, look to the NEW Waste Management.
