Lula denies proposed subdivision
No reason given at
BY SHARON HOGAN
The Lula City Council has
denied a developeri’s request
to locate a subdivision in the
city. No reason for the de
nial was given at the Aug. 21
meeting but city leaders told
the developer a written list of
the reasons would be given in
the next seven days.
At an earlier public hearing,
area residents spoke in oppo-
meetingfor action
sition to the request. Among
the reasons given by the citi
zens were traffic concerns
and agriculture in the area.
Butler-Murphy LLC was
seeking an annexation and
rezoning for a planned unit
development on 43.126 acres
on Railroad Avcnuc/Wcst
County Line Road.
Mayor Milton Turner told
those in attendance represent
ing Butler-Murphy LLC that
the city manager would deliv
er to them the list of reasons
for denial of this application
within the next seven work
ing days.
A representative of Butler-
Murphy, LLC said they have
already filed their constitu
tional objections to the city
on this decision. When this is
done, it often means that the
applicant plans to file a law
suit against the city.
Sewage spill reported in Lula
BY SHARON HOGAN
A sewage spill has been
reported in Lula.
In a news release on Mon
day morning, city manager
Dennis Bergin reports a
sewage spill in Lula on Ca
ter Street 200 feet west and
Athens Street 200 feet north
at a manhole.
The preliminary estimate
of volume discharged in a
minor tributary of Hageni’s
Creek is 3,280 gallons. The
initial review of the trans
mission line shows that an
unknown object caused the
back-up at the manhole,
Bergin said.
City work crews have
corrected the blockage and
continue to monitor the flow
conditions for performance
and are monitoring the en
vironmental conditions sur
rounding the site.
Any questions regarding
this incident may be direct
ed to Lula City Hall at 770-
869-3801.
Conference center no
longer planned by CVB
A civic center proposed
for the Banks Crossing area
is no longer in the works, ac
cording to an audit released
recently by the Banks Coun
ty Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
The CVB had been plan
ning for and allocating funds
for more than one year for
the proposed center. The
audit states that a feasibil
ity study “was not in favor
of developing a center at this
time.”
The money that was put
aside for the conference
center will be moved to the
marketing development and
program fund.
