BCMS FFA team competes
in land judging event
The Banks County Middle
School FFA Land Judging
Team recently placed third
in the Area II FFA Land
Judging Career Develop
ment Event out of 10 teams
present. The event was held
at the University of Geor
gia Arboretum in Braselton
Sept. 25.
The Land Judging Career
Development Event provides
students the opportunity to
determine land classifica
tion, use and treatment prac
tices for selected sites. The
students must consider top
soil texture and thickness,
effective depth, permeabili
ty of subsoil, slope, erosion,
drainage and land capabil
ity. Team members include
Timothy Ragsdale, Cory Ta-
naiewski, Travis Cook and
Madison Humphries.
FFA is a national organi
zation of over 449,000 mem
bers preparing for leadership
and careers in the science,
business and technology of
agriculture. FFA is an inte
gral part of the agricultural
education program in public
schools.

veloping their potential for
premier leadership, personal
growth and career success

Georgia Farm Bureau to
award scholarships
Georgia Farm Bureau will
award a total of $14,250
in scholarships to 10 high
school seniors who plan to
pursue a college degree in
agriculture or family and
consumer sciences, Henry D.
Banks, Banks County Farm
Bureau president, recently
announced.
The top three students will
each receive a scholarship of
$3,000. The remaining seven
students will each receive a
$750 scholarship. Students
are eligible to submit an ap
plication if they, a parent or
legal guardian were a mem
ber of Georgia Farm Bureau
as of September 1. The schol
arships are sponsored by the
Georgia Farm Bureau Mu
tual Insurance Company, in
cooperation with the Georgia
Farm Bureau Women's Com
mittee.
Applicants must plan to
enter a unit of the University
System of Georgia or Berry
College during the 2009-
2010 academic year to pur
sue an undergraduate degree
in agricultural and environ
mental sciences, family and
consumer sciences or a relat
ed agricultural held. All ap
plications must be submitted
by December 12. Scholarship
recipients will be announced
in March.
“I would like to encourage
any of our local high school
seniors who are planning to
pursue a degree in agricul
ture or family and consumer
sciences to consider applying
for the Farm Bureau scholar
ship,” said Henry D. Banks,
Banks County Farm Bureau
president.

approved and signed by the
Farm Bureau president of the
county where Farm Bureau
membership is held before
submitting to the Georgia
Farm Bureau home office.

BCHS students serve as mentors
Students from Banks Coun
ty High School are using their
free time on Thursday morn
ings to visit Banks County
Primary School and Banks
County Elementary School to
work with younger students.
The high school students
are reading, helping primary
school students practice letters
and helping with math and
motivating the younger chil
dren to do well in school.
Not only does this mentor
ship help the younger stu
dents, school officials said, it
also enhances the importance
of volunteerism as well as the
self-worth of the high school
students.
Forty-one high school stu
dents visited with BCPS re
cently and school officials are
hoping to have more partici
pate in the coming weeks.
