Rev. Jabel Robert “J.R.” Baird
Jr., 78, of Toccoa, died Sunday,
September 28, 2008, at Athens
Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Jackson County
on January 19,
1930, the son ^!
of the late Jabel BUlt —
Robert “J.R.”
Baird Sr. and
Hattie Ford Baird. He was a mem
ber of Glad Tidings Assembly of
God and was a veteran, having
served in the United States Air
Force. He pastored five churches
since 1967 and was a farmer at
heart. Mr. Baird was preceded in
death by a son, Robert Donovan
“Donnie” Baird; brothers, Lester
Baird, James Baird and Marvin
Baird; and sisters, Darlene
Hembree, Mattie Lee Baker and
Betty Fleeman.
Survivors include his wife,
Murnette Robinson Baird,
Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-
law, Robin and Trudy Baird and
John and Tonya Baird, all of
Toccoa, Mark and Diane Baird,
Lexington; daughter-in-law,
Ramona Baird, Toccoa; sisters,
Curtistine Bruce, Nicholson, Edna
Webster, Greensboro, N.C., and
Esther Summers, Bartow, Fla.;
six granddaughters; one grand
son, one great-grandson; and sev
eral nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, September 30, at Glad
Tidings Assembly of God with
the Revs. David Braxton, Charles
Reese and Wilmer Ivester offi
ciating. Burial was in Roselane
Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Robin Baird, Mark Baird, John
Baird, Joseph Powell, Marcus
Baird, Rocky Fulbright, Jimmy
Ford and Bill Smith.
Whitlock Mortuary, Toccoa,
was in charge of arrangements.

Jesse Ballenger
Jesse Dewitt Ballenger, 58, of
Homer, died Monday, October
13, 2008, at his residence follow
ing an extended illness.
He was the son of Dorothy
Ballenger of Commerce.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include his wife. Dale
Ballenger, Homer; a son, Stacy
Ballenger, Gillsville; daughter,
Marie Clark, Homer; brother,
Jimmy Ballenger, Carnesville;
sister, Betty Chambers, Gillsville;
and grandchildren, Cody
Ballenger, Cory Clark, and Kaleb
Clark..
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, October 15, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with
the Rev. George Tubbs officiat
ing. Burial was in the Mason
Family Cemetery.

Louise Martin
Louise Martin, 92, of Lula, died
Friday, October 10, 2008.
She was born on February 12,
1916, in Elyria, Ohio, the daugh
ter of the late Ida Laundon and
David Wesley Keeler. She was a
registered nurse and worked in
surgery her entire nursing career,
retiring in 1981 from Morton
Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla.
She and her husband were active
members of the First Methodist
Church in Clearwater, Fla., until
they moved to Lula in 2003 to
be near their son, David, and his
family. They then became mem
bers of St. Paul United Methodist
Church in Gainesville.
Survivors include her husband
of 61 years, Durward Fletcher
Martin; sons, David Vernon and
Jeffrey Scott Martin and their
spouses; and grandchildren,
Lauren, Kathryn, Rachel and
Joshua.
Memorial services were held
Monday, October 13, at the St.
Paul United Methodist Church on
Washington Street in Gainesville.
Burial was in Clearwater, Fla., on
Wednesday, October 15.
Memorial contributions may
be made to the American Heart
Association or Northeast Georgia
Medical Center Hospice.

Bonnie Sue
Baugh
Bonnie Sue Baugh, 71, of
Gillsville, died Wednesday,
October 8, 2008, at BJC Medical
Center, following a brief illness.
Born in Banks County on
October 19, 1936, she was the
daughter of the late James Russell
and Margie Nell Hopper Jackson.
She was employed as a bus driver
and was a member of Mercy's
Call Church. Mrs. Baugh was
preceded in death by her hus
band, Lamar George Baugh; and
a brother, James Leon Jackson.
She enjoyed her pets, especial
ly her beloved dog, Littleman,
and enjoyed spending spare time
making crafts and selling them at
local functions.
Survivors include a step-son
and spouse, Terry and Lynn
Baugh, Gillsville; sisters,
Laverne Hutchins, Gillsville,
and Jean Lewallen, Maysville; a
nephew, David Russell Marlow,
Maysville; great-niece, Chelsea
Leanne Marlow, Maysville; step-
grandchildren, George, Lou and
Frank Baugh, all of Gillsville,
and Lois Krinter, Cornelia; and an
aunt. Ora Bell Hopper, Gillsville.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, October 11, at the
Hickory Flat United Methodist
Church with Pastors Jerry
Cameron and Frankie Spivey offi
ciating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Memorials contributions may
be made to the Hickory Flat
Cemetery Fund.

Ernestine Maney Blackburn
Vandiver, 80, of the Hollingsworth
Community, Alto, died Friday,
October 10, 2008, at her resi
dence following a brief illness.
Born in Banks County on
September 26, 1928, she was
the daughter of the late William
McKinley and Pauline Chambers
Maney. She was employed as
a seamstress with Carwood
Manufacturing with 46 years
of dedicated service and was
a member of Harmony Baptist
Church. She enjoyed sewing and
spending time with her grand
children, loved ones stated. Mrs.

Whitfield
Eleanor Scales Whitfield, 88,
of Commerce, died Thursday,
October 9, 2008, at Athens
Regional Medical Center in
Athens.
She was born in Banks County,
the daughter of the late Paul and
Callabelle Loudermilk Scales.
She was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Commerce and
was a retired school teacher. Mrs.
Whitfield was preceded in death
by her husband, Boyd Whitfield.
Survivors include a son, Mitch
Whitfield, Homer; three grand
children; and seven great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, October 11, at the First
Baptist Church in Commerce
with Dr. Carlton Allen offici
ating. Burial was in Grey Hill
Cemetery.

Gladys Purcell
Gladys Pruitt Thomas Purcell,
93, of Jefferson, died Saturday,
October 11, 2008, following an
extended illness.
She was a longtime resident of
Kannapolis, N.C., and was bom
in Banks County, the daughter
of the late John Joe and Nezzie
Hagard Pruitt. She was a mem
ber of Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints and was retired
from the textile industry. Mrs.
Purcell was preceded in death by
her husband, Leatus Thomas; a
brother, John Dallas Pruitt; and
sisters, Lelia Wood, Bert Purcell
and Lucille Wages.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Shirley Hewitt, Jefferson;
granddaughter, Cindy Nelson,
Arlington, Va.; sister, Mary Ruth
Hudson, Douglas; and a number
of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday, October 18, at 2 p.m. in
the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral
Home with the Bishop Gaultney
officiating. Burial will be in Grey
Hill Cemetery. The family will
receive friends at the funeral
home Saturday, October 18, from
1 to 2 p.m.

Florence Helton Freeman,

ing an extended illness.
Born in White County, she was
the daughter of the late Gus and
Assie London Helton.
Mrs. Freeman was the sister of
Dorothy Howard of Gillsville, and
Ann Helton Huneycutt, Baldwin.

est attending member of Timber
Ridge Baptist Church. Mrs.
Brown was preceded in death
by her husband, William Arthur
Brown; and a son, Ernest Willie
“Bill" Brown.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Virginia Brown Loe,
Lawrenceville; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Larry Joel and Janice
Brown, Gainesville; granddaugh
ters, Carol Ann Baker, Homer,
Robin Loe, Lawrenceville, Joan
Ausburn, Cumming, Kristy Elaine
Grizzle and Erin Michelle Brown,
