School
Georgia Farm Bureau
to award scholarships
Georgia Farm Bureau will
award a total of $14,250 in
scholarships to ten high school
seniors who plan to pursue a
college degree in agriculture or
family and consumer sciences,
Henry D. Banks, Banks County
Farm Bureau president, recently
announced.
The top three students will
each receive a scholarship of
$3,000. The remaining seven
students will each receive a
$750 scholarship. Students are
eligible to submit an application
if they, a parent or legal guardian
were a member of Georgia Farm
Bureau as of September 1. The
scholarships are sponsored by
the Georgia Farm Bureau Mu
tual Insurance Company, in co
operation with the Georgia Farm
Bureau Women's Committee.
Applicants must plan to enter
a unit of the University System
of Georgia or Berry College
during the 2009-2010 academic
year to pursue an undergradu
ate degree in agricultural and
environmental sciences, fam
ily and consumer sciences or
a related agricultural field. All
applications must be submitted
by December 12. Scholarship
recipients will be announced in
March.

niors who are planning to pursue
a degree in agriculture or family
and consumer sciences to con
sider applying for the Farm Bu
reau Scholarship,” said Henry
D. Banks, Banks County Farm
Bureau president.

the scholarship program or to
obtain an application. A copy of
the application is also available
by going to www.gfb.org and
selecting GFB Programs, then
Youth Education and finally
GFB Scholarships. All scholar
ship applications must be ap
proved and signed by the Farm
Bureau president of the county
where Farm Bureau member
ship is held before submitting to
the Georgia Farm Bureau home
office.

County Elementary School is
holding a Save The Earth Art
Contest. The purpose is to en
courage and teach students,
and grown-ups alike, about
the importance of protecting
the environment.
The curriculum at BCES
will focus on how environ
mental problems could be
addressed and will encourage
the students to help find solu
tions to these problems.
Art teacher Katie Harrison
started a recycling program at
elementary
collection of plastic bottles
and paper last year and it con
tinues on this year.
Many materials we use ev
ery day can be reused and re
cycled, leaders said. We must
teach our children ways to
reduce how much garbage we
throw away.
Students will be asked to
draw a picture suggesting
ideas and actions that the
student can take to increase
awareness and protect our en
vironment.
Management
R&B Landfillfs goal is to get
the students thinking about the
problem and providing us with
their solutions in art form.
The artwork should be
drawn in color on an 8 ¥2 X
11 inch piece of white paper.
The drawings will be judged
on how well the artwork rep
resents ideas on protecting
our environment, recycling or
reusing and artistic merit on
each grade level.
Students will submit their
drawing to the art teacher by
day on
Nov. 14. For identification,
their name, age and grade
should be printed on the back
side of the drawing.
Winners will be announced
December 5. First, second,
and third place winners will
be selected from each grade
6 third, fourth and fifth. First
place winners will receive a
$50 gift certificate. Second
place winners will receive
a $25 gift certificate. Third
place winners will receive a
$15 gift certificate.
PALS to meet November 18 at BCHS
Parents Advancing Leop
ard Success, known as
“PALS,” is in place at Banks
County High School for
parents of 8th-12th grade
students.
The purpose of the pro
gram is to answer the ques
tions parents have about
high school, transition from
middle to high school, In
ternet safety, academic re
quirements, teenage drug/
alcohol use, college, schol
arships, level of parent in
volvement, upcoming man
datory testing (GHSGT,
EOCT), teenage sex, anger
management and other rel
evant issues.
Several meetings are
planned throughout the
school year. The schedule
is as follows: Tuesday, No
vember 18: Tuesday, Janu
ary 27; Monday, March 30;
and Tuesday, April 28. The
meetings will be held from
6-7:30 p.m. in the BCHS
cafeteria.
The agenda for each meet
ing will be as follows: Sup
per, 30 minutes; academic
presentation/discussion, 20
minutes; social presenta
tion/discussion, 20 minutes;
and questions/answers/dis
cussion, 20 minutes.
School personnel attend
ing the meetings will in
clude administrators, coun
selors, teachers and the
graduation coach.
Possible door prizes will
include: Gas cards, rent/
mortgage supplements, gro
ceries, restaurant/retail gift
cards, etc.
