Farm-City Week celebrates agriculture's bounty
At Thanksgiving, Americans
often celebrate their blessings
with family and friends. Be
cause food plays an integral part
of holiday gatherings, the week
of Thanksgiving makes the per
fect time to celebrate Farm-City
Week, Nov. 21 through Thanks
giving Day, and reflect on the
cooperative relationship between
farmers and their urban col
leagues who help process, mar
ket and retail the food farmers
grow to the American consumer.
This is the 53rd anniversary
of Farm-City Week. National
Farm-City Week was begun in
1955 by Kiwanis International
to increase the understanding of
the partnership between urban
and rural residents. Farm days
at schools, farm tours, banquets
and mayoral proclamations are
just a few of the observances
that will be held in communities
across the country to mark this
annual event.
“What better time to think
about agriculture and Georgia’s
farmers than at Thanksgiving
when we gather around the table
with our families,” said Henry D.
Banks, Banks County Farm Bu
reau president. “Farmers depend
on consumers to purchase the
crops they produce and consum
ers depend on farmers to provide
an abundant and safe food sup
ply.”
Georgia farm and timber own
ers also provide environmental
benefits to the state by preserv
ing natural habitats for native
plants and animals. According
to the Georgia Forestry Com
mission, of Georgia’s 37 million
acres of land area, 24.8 million
acres is forestland.
“As you dig into your Thanks
giving feast, take time to say a
prayer of thanks for the farmers
who grew the food you will eat
this holiday season and all the
hands that played role in getting
that food to your table,” Banks
said. “They have all proudly la
bored all year to produce, pro
cess and deliver food to feed not
just our families in the U.S., but
also the rest of the world.”
Founded in 1937, Georgia
Farm Bureau is the state’s largest
general farm organization.
NATURAL GAS SAFETY TIPS
The City of Commerce has been delivering natural gas in your community
safely and reliably for over 50 years. We design, install, test, operate,
maintain and monitor these underground pipelines to meet or exceed
federal regulatory standards to ensure our pipeline system remains safe
and reliable for everyone. Despite constantly monitoring and maintaining
natural gas leaks sometimes occur and it is important that you educate
yourself on what to do.
• Learn To Recognize Natural Gas Smell
Natural Gas has a rotten egg odor added to make it easy to detect.
Scratch & Sniff brochures are available at Commerce City Hall.
• If You Smell Natural Gas
Leave the area immediately. Do not operate any electrical devices,
including telephones, that may cause a spark. Call the emergency
numbers listed below to report the leak. Our specially trained
employees will handle the situation, so you stay safe.
• Call Before You Dig
Call the DIG SAFE number below before you begin any excavation
around your house. They will notify all utilities to come and locate their
lines. If you should hit an underground gas line, leave the area
immediately and call 911 and your local gas company.
