Ruben Studdard shines in 'Misbehavin'
A merican Idol star Ru
ben Studdard gave an
amazing performance
Tuesday night at the Fox Theatre
in Atlanta for the debut of “Ain't
Misbehavin’.”
Fats Waller, the outrageously pro
digious comic and musical soul of
1930s Harlem, lives on in this rol
licking, finger-snapping show that
is still considered one of Broad
way's most well crafted revues.
Some of Waller's most success
ful musical numbers are performed
by Studdard and a stellar cast, including two
other American Idol finalists — Frenchie Da
vis and Trenyce Cobbins.
Studdard and Davis do a wonderful rendi
tion of “Honeysuckle Rose” in the first act.
Another standout in the first act is “The Jit
terbug Waltz” featuring Ruben and the cast.
The wonderful comedy of Fats Waller is
more evident in the second act with “Your
Feets Too Big” and “Fat and Greasy” bring
ing the most laughs.
It was an entertaining two hours with six
wonderful performers. It was great to see
Studdard, known for his R&B and gospel
performances, try out jazz. He comes through
and gives a touching tribute to Fats Waller.
The live on-stage band gives a feel that you
are in an intimate New York club in the 1930s.
They also give an amazing performance.
The 30th anniversary national tour of the
Tony Award-winning musical “Ain’t Misbe-
havin,” presented by Fidelity In
