FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
Banks County High School Healthcare Science class members were giving free
blood pressure checks at the annual turkey giveaway on Friday at Banks Coun

DOT to hold meeting on Lula bridge
The Georgia Department of Transportation
will hold a public information open house
meeting to discuss a proposed bridge replace
ment and road realignment on State Route 52
over the Chattahoochee River in Lula.
The meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Lula Elementary School
cafeteria, located at 6130 Chattahoochee Street
in Lula.
DOT engineers will be available to discuss
the proposed project. There will be no formal
presentation.
“Along with replacing the bridge, we plan to
straighten out some curves and flatten the road
around the bridge,” said DOT district engineer
Russell McMurry. “We will work on a mile-
long section of Hwy. 52 at the bridge.”
Anyone unable to attend the meeting may
send comments on the project to Glenn
Bowman, DOT, 3993 Aviation Circle, Atlanta,
Ga., 30336. All comments will be considered
in the development of the final project design,
McMurry said. Comments must be submitted
by Dec. 16.
Baldwin approves SPLOST spending

The Baldwin City Council
approved the spending of Banks
County Special Purpose Local
Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)
revenues at a called meeting on
Thursday, Nov. 20.
The 2001 SPLOST will be
reimbursed $20,200 with the
2006 SPLOST revenues for water
meters.
SPLOST funds will also go
toward payment of invoices from
Engineering Management Inc. for
the Park Avenue project.
In other business:
•the council unanimously
approved spending $5,650 of
SPLOST 4 funds to purchase water
meter replacement materials and
supplies.
•December 22 was approved as
the Water Department’s turn-off
day. A letter will be sent to every
one on the turn-off list.
•council member Jeff Murray
provided an update on the fence at
the Roadside Park that Zach Slaton
is currently replacing for his Eagle
Scout project.
•the council awarded an asphalt
contract to C.W. Matthews
Contracting in the amount of
$99,000.

holiday closings

the holiday closings for
its city offices.
City offices will be
closed on Thursday and
Friday, Nov. 27 and
28, for Thanksgiving;
Wednesday and
Thursday, Dec. 24
and 25, in observance
of Christmas; and
Thursday, Jan. 1, for
New Year’s.

of Commerce, died Thursday,
November 13, 2008, at Athens
Regional Medical Center.
Born in Stephens County, she
was the daughter of the late
Holman and Pearl Williams
Ayers. She was self-employed,
having retired from Lewallen’s
Tot and Teen Shop, and was a
member of the Mt. Olive Baptist
Church in Commerce.
Survivors include her husband
of 66 years, Felton Lewallen,
Commerce; daughter and son-
in-law, Jean and Billy Parson,
Cumming; son and daughter-
in-law, Mike and Paulette
Lewallen, Commerce; grand
sons, Eric Parson, Cumming,
Paul Lewallen and Brad
Lewallen, both of Commerce;
great-grandchildren, Ashley,
Amber and Braison Lewallen,

'Teddy' Usher
Teri “Teddy” Whitmire Usher,
49, of Cleveland, died Tuesday,
November 18, 2008, at her resi
dence following an extended
illness.
Born in New Jersey, she had
lived in Habersham and White
Counties most of her life.
Mrs. Usher was the mother of
Allison Mullinax of Alto.

Friday, November 21, in the
chapel of Barrett Funeral Home
with the Revs. Paul Flynn and
Dennis Turner officiating.

Nolie Bellamy
Nolie LuRuth Ayers Bellamy,
85, of New Bethel Community,
died Monday, November 17,
2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in
Athens.
Born on May 14, 1923, in
Franklin County, she was
the daughter of the late John
Franklin and Myrt Wood Ayers.
She was a retired teacher and
taught many years at Eastanollee
Elementary School. She was
a lifelong active member of
the Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church. Mrs. Bellamy was pre
ceded in death by a son, Ralph
Newton Bellamy Jr.; siblings,
Octie Ayers, Corene McFarlin,
Alene Wilkinson, Sue Ayers,
Janelle Andrews, Darvin
Ayers and John F. Ayers Jr.;
and a great-grandchild, Alison
Bertrang.
Survivors include her hus
band, Ralph N. Bellamy Sr.,
daughter and son-in-law, Jan,
who is a principal and long
time educator in Banks County
School System and is present
ly principal at Banks County
Elementary School in Homer,
and John, who teaches in Banks
County, Bertrang, Carnesville;
grandchildren, Shawn Bertrang,
Amy Crump, Charli Bellamy,
Anna Wilkinson and R.N.
Bellamy; great-grandson, Drew
Bertrang; and sister, Dorothy
Bellamy, Carnesville.

Wednesday, November 19, at
the Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Ryan
Seawright, Bill Ratliff and
Donald Phillips officiating.

Clara
Fitzpatrick
Clara Mildred Fitzpatrick, 93,
of Ila, died Thursday, November
20, 2008, at her residence.
A native of Banks County,
she was the daughter of the
late Bennett and Anno Parks
Segars. She was a seamstress
and a very active member of Ila
Baptist Church until her health
declined not allowing her to
attend. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was
preceded in death by a son,
Wayne Fitzpatrick; and daugh
ter, Beverly Hardison.
Survivors include daughters
and son-in-law, Wanda Thomas
and Jimmy Lanphear, Ila, and
Rachael Drake, Colbert; son and
daughter-in-law, Timothy and
Cheryl Fitzpatrick, Mooresville,
N.C.; brother and sister-in-law,
Roy and Brenda Segars, Banks
County; sister-in-law, Melease
Watkins, Jacksonville, N.C.;
11 grandchildren; and several
great-grandchildren.

Saturday, November 22, at Ila
Baptist Church. Burial was at
Ila Cemetery.

Christine Elrod
Christine Umbehant Elrod,
76, of Anderson, S.C., died
Tuesday, November 18, 2008,
in Anderson, S.C.
Born on July 18, 1932, in
Banks County, she was the
daughter of the late Larkin and
Emma Pitts Umbehant. She
was a member of the River
Heights Pentecostal Church
and was a homemaker. Mrs.
Elrod was preceded in death by
her husband, Harlan L. Elrod;
son, Robert Andrew Dill; and
brothers, Otis Umbehant, Elmo
Umbehant, Arthur Umbehant
and Everett Umbehant.
Survivors include a son,
John Dill, Belton, S.C.; broth
ers, Gene Umbehant, Mt. Airy,
Glenn Umbehant, Demorest;
four grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Friday, November 21 at the
Community Baptist Church
cemetery with the Rev. John
Umbehant officiating.

Roy Coggins
Roy Chester Coggins, 79,
of Commerce, died Tuesday,
November 18, 2008, at BJC
Medical Center in Commerce,
following an extended illness.
Born in Gwinnett County, he
was the son of the late Hubert
and Birdie Overby Coggins and
was Baptist.
Mr. Coggins was the broth
er of Frank D. Coggins of
Maysville.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, November 20, in
the chapel of Memorial Park
South Funeral Home. Burial
was in Memorial Park South
Cemetery.

Pennington
Geraldine Pennington, 82, of
Talmo, died Sunday, November
9, 2008.
A life long resident of Hall
County, she was bom on July 6,
1926, she was the daughter of
the late W.O. and Ether Collins
Jarrett.
Mrs. Pennington was the
grandmother of Millie and
Mark Love of Maysville.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, November 12, in
the chapel of Little & Davenport
Funeral Home with the Revs.

George Hulsey
George Junior Hulsey, 64, of
Cleveland, died Wednesday,
November 19, 2008, at his resi
dence, following an extended
illness.
Born in Banks County, he was
the son of the late Robert and
Mamie Simmons Hulsey. He
worked as a pulpwooder and
was a member of Leatherwood
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his dear
friend, Sandra McJunkin;
daughters and sons-in-law, Janet
and Ricky Alexander and Tasha
and Jimmy Everhart; sons and
daughters-in-law, Mitchell and
Michelle Clark, Tommy and
Pam McJunkin, Christopher

Hardman
Donald Hardman, 44, of
Demorest, died Wednesday,
November 19, 2008, following
a sudden illness.
He was bom on November
25, 1963, in Jackson County,
the son of Michael Hardman
of Cleveland, and Linda Webb
of Demorest. He attended the
Return Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to his
parents, include a son, Andrew
Hardman; sister, Angela Usher;
and brothers, Ben Hardman and
Daniel Hardman.
Graveside services were held
Thursday, November 20, at the
Return Baptist Church cemetery
with the Rev. Billy Burrell and
Mr. Skipper Smith officiating.
