Rev. J.L. White
Rev. J.L. White, 81, of Lula,
died Saturday, December 6, 2008,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
Born in Banks County on
November 25, 1927, he was the
son of the late John J. and Myra
Phillips White. He was a farmer
and enjoyed fishing. He was a
member, chairman of the board
of deacons, and associate pastor
of Rock Springs Baptist Church.
Rev. White was preceded in death
by his wife, Frances Ruth Crisp
White; a brother, Buster White;
and two grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Johnny
White, Lula; daughters and sons-
in-law, Carolyn and Terry Mote,
Lula, Brenda and Daniel Webb,
Dawsonville, Joan and Kennith
Cochran, Commerce, Peggy
and Hoyt Lovell, Gillsville,
and Delores and Tony Goss,
Clarkesville; brothers, Doyle
White, Lula, and Jewell White,
Alto; sisters, Mae Smith, Ethleen
Hooper, both of Lula, Francine
Westbrook, Baldwin, Betty Jo
Tjepkema, Oakwood, and Joyce
Shubert, Alto; 14 grandchildren;
and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, December 9, at Rock
Springs Baptist Church with the
Revs. Chris Webb, Tony Goss and
Kent Stewart officiating. Burial
was in the church cemetery.

J. Mac Barber
J. Mac Barber, 91, died Sunday,
December 7, 2008, in Macon.
Born in Banks County, he grew
up in Commerce, and was the
son of the late
William L. and
Susan K. Barber.
Mr. Barber was
preceded in death
by his wife, Janette McGarity
Barber; sisters, Marian Barber and
Kathryn B. Gaultney; and broth
ers, William Ralph Barber and
Dwight F. Barber. He attended
Georgia Institute of Technology
and was a veteran, having served
in the United States Army during
World War II.
Mr. Barber served in the
Georgia Legislature from 1949
to 1973 as a representative from
Jackson County Public Television
in Georgia, the Fembank Science
Center and educational bills were
among his major focus while
serving in Atlanta. He served as
Mayor of Commerce, Chairman
of the State Committee on
Education, President of Georgia
School Board Association,
President of Commerce Kiwanis
Club, Chairman of the Board
of Commerce First Methodist
Church, Chairman of Jackson-
Commerce Hospital Authority,
President of Chamber of
Commerce, Chairman of the
Georgia Committee on Children
andYouth, Governor's Conference
on Education and Jackson-Banks
Chapter American Red Cross.
He was elected to five terms
on the Georgia Public Service
Commission where he served as
Chairman. He was recognized by
the Georgia Legislature for his
efforts in protecting the rights of
the consumer. Such organizations
as the Georgia Association of
Education, Georgia Science and
Technology Commission, Emory
University's Kappa Phi Kappa
Literary Society and the National
Association of Retired People
have recognized him as an advo
cate for the elderly, the children
and the poor. He championed the
extension of free telephone ser
vice across north Georgia.
Barber was honored for
his accomplishments by the
University of Georgia, Emory
University, Georgia Association
of Educators, Georgia Youth
Council, National Association of
Retired People and the Georgia
PTA.
Survivors include a niece,
Angela G. Adams (Mrs. V. James
Jr.), Macon; great-nephew, James
Adams III, Macon; great-niece,
Kathryn A. Brooks, Macon.
Memorial services will be held
Friday, December 12, at 2 p.m.,
at the Commerce First United
Methodist Church with the
Revs. Hoyt A. Allen and David
G. Bowen officiating. The body
was donated to Emory University
Medical School.
In lieu of flowers, donations
should be made to the Commerce
United Methodist Church,

'J.B/ Bonds
James Brooks “J.B.” Bonds, 82,
of Lula, died Sunday, December
7, 2008, at Northeast Georgia
Medical Center in Gainesville,
following a brief illness.
Born in Banks County on
January 3, 1926, he was the son
of the late Warren and Maggie
Brock Bonds. He was retired from
Warren Featherbone as a pattern
maker with 35 years of dedicated
service. He was Holiness and
enjoyed the outdoors. Mr. Bonds
was preceded in death by his
wife, Edith Meeks Bonds; broth
ers, Charlie and Myles Bonds;
and a sister, Grace Davidson.
Survivors include daughters
and sons-in-law, Betty Ann and
Jerry Martin, Gainesville, Cathy
and Jerry Miller, Lula, and Lynn
and Scott Darby, Hattiesburg,
Miss.; sons and daughter-in-law,
Stanley and June Bonds and
Larry Bonds, all of Lula; sisters
and brother-in-law, Cara Wade
and Ruby Simmons, both of Alto,
and Ruth Acrey, Cornelia, Bonnie
and Blake Bagwell, Buford; sis-
ters-in-law, Betty Jordan, Alto,

Herbert
Tanksley
Herbert Tanksley, 80, of Alto,
died Thursday, December 4,
2008, at the Northeast Georgia
Medical Center.
Born on November 9, 1928, in
Anderson, S.C., he was the son
of the late Russ
Lee and Dossie
Ivie Tanksley. He
was retired from
J.P. Stephens as
a supervisor with 26 years of
service and was Baptist. He was
a veteran, having served in the
United States Air Force.
Survivors include his wife,
Clara Shirley Tanksley, Alto; sis
ter, Evelyn Janies, Seneca, S.C.;
sister-in-law, Bertha Shirley,
Alto.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 6, at
Whitfield Funeral Home with
the Rev. Ray Turpin officiat
ing. Burial was in B.C. Grant
Baptist Church Cemetery with
military honors provided by the
Habersham County American
Legion #84, The Grand Reeves
VFW Post #7720, and the Rabun
County DAV Chapter #15.

Barbara Nix
Barbara Ann Gerrell Nix, 61, of
Alto, died Thursday, December
4, 2008, at her residence.
Born in White County on April
2, 1947, she was the daughter
of Snow Dorsey Cooley of Alto
the late J.W. “Willie” Gerrell.
She was a homemaker and was
Baptist. Mrs. Nix was preced
ed in death by a sister, Kathy
Gerrell; and step-father, Janies
Arthur Cooley. She enjoyed fish
ing, playing cards and spending
time with her family, loved ones
stated.
Survivors in addition to her
mother include her husband,
Jerry G. Nix, Alto; daughter and
son-in-law, Pamela and Dwayne
Allen, Alto; sons and daugh-
ter-in-law, Luke and Connie
Cochran and Danny Cochran, all
of Cornelia; seven step-children;
brothers, Billy Wayne Gerrell,
Royston, Haskell and Neal
Gerrell, both of Cornelia; sister,
Brenda Arrowood, Cornelia; five
grandchildren, Trent and Brent
Nix, Kayla, Chelsey and Brooke
Cochran.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, December 7, in the
chapel of McGahee-Griffin and
Stewart Funeral Home with
the Revs. Danny O’Kelley and
Corbin Coley officiating. Burial
was at Yonah Memorial Gardens.

'Did' Echols
Lee "Did” Echols, 86, of Lula,
died Tuesday, December 2, at his
residence.
Born on May 3, 1922, in
Hall County, he was the son
of the late Richard L. and Ida
Simmons Echols. He was retired
from Toccoa
Foundry Steel
Manufacturing
as general man
ager for 40 years, and was a vet
eran, having served in the United
States Army. Mr. Echols was
preceded in death by his wife,
Bonnie Pierce Echols.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Kathy and
Larry Smith, Gainesville; sons
and daughter-in-law, Sam and
Joyce Echols and Dale Echols,
all of Lula; sister, Faye Keheley,
Atlanta; five grandchildren; and
10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, December 4, at Belton
Baptist Church with the Revs.
Robert Nix and Paul Morris offi
ciating. Burial was in the church
cemetery with military honors
provided by the Habersham
County American Legion Post
#84, the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post
#7720, and the Rabun County
D.A.V. Chapter #15.

Christell Meeks
Christell Lawrence Meeks,
82, of Cornelia, died Friday,
December 5, 2008, at the
Habersham County Medical
Center.
Born in Banks County on
February 8, 1926, she was the
daughter of the late Emory and
Minnie Brady Lawrence and was
a 1943 graduate of Baldwin High
School. She was a member of
the Level Grove Baptist Church
and the Willing Workers Sunday
School Class, and was a home
maker. Mrs. Meeks was preced
ed in death by a sister, Florine
Lawrence; and a brother, Buford
Smith.
Survivors include her husband,
W.C. “Bill” Meeks, Cornelia;
daughter and son-in-law, Gail and
Bill Raper, Alto; son and daugh
ter-in-law, Calvin and Vickie
Meeks, Easley, S.C.; brother and
sister-in-law, Janies and Monteen
Lawrence, Gainesville; five
grandchildren; and five great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, December 7, at the Level
Grove Baptist Church with the
Revs. Brian James and Terry
Rice officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery.

Faye Justus
Faye Ledford Justus, 67, of
Alto, died Saturday, December 6,
2008, following a sudden illness.
Bom in Macon County, N.C.,
on May 29, 1941, she was the
daughter of the late Charles
Tindell and May Bell Alexander
Ledford. She was retired from
Mt. Vernon Mills with over 30
years of dedicated service and
was Baptist. Mrs. Justus was pre
ceded in death by a sister, Barbara
Sue Ramey; and a brother, Doyle
Ledford.
Survivors include a daughter
and son-in-law, Christy Lynn
and Keith Williams, Alto; son,
Richard Allen Justus, Clayton;
brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry
and Helen Ledford, Toccoa,
and Charles and Linda Ledford,
Franklin, N.C.; grandchildren,
Misty Tolle, Noel Herron, Buster
Justus, Ashley Pollard, Keaton
Williams, Taylor Williams and
Hailey Williams; and four great
grandchildren.

Charles Overton Hill, 76,
of Commerce, died Tuesday,
December 2, 2008, at Crawford
W. Long Hospital.
Bom in Banks County, he was
the son of the late Edwin and
Marian Harber Hill. He was
retired from the State of Georgia
as a Safety Director and was a
member of the Homer United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Frances Wood Hill, Commerce;
a sister, Francis Marian Moore,
Wellington, Fla.; grandchil
dren, Brandon Hill, Lauren Hill,
Taylor Hill, and Caitlin Hill, all
of Commerce.

Silas “S.R.” Ruben Miller, 74,
of Commerce, died Wednesday,

an extended illness.
Bom in Hall County, he was
the son of the late Phillip Allen
and Dolly Catherine Miller.
Mr. Miller was the brother of
Estelle Hendrix of Lula.

Jamelia Darlene Jones, 66, of
Nails CreekCrossing Community,
died Friday, December 5, 2008,
at the Cobb Memorial Hospital.
Born on June 7, 1942, in
Shawnee, Okla., she was the
daughter of the late James William
Wingett Sr. and Mildred Olivia
Clifton Wingett. She was a wait
ress at the Iron Skillet Restaurant
at the Petro Track Center and was
Baptist. Mrs. Jones was preceded
in death by a brother, Johnny Lee
Wingett.
Survivors include her husband,
Andrew Dwayne “Andy” Jones;
a son. Roger Lee See, Canon;
daughters, Darsey Lynn Rollins,
Lebanon, Tenn., and Andrea
Dawn Kennedy, Royston; broth
ers, Jerry Wingett, Troy, Michigan,
and James William Wingett Jr.,
Waterford, Mich.; sisters. Rita

Pearl McConnell McAllister,
100, of Clarkesville, died

private healthcare facility, follow
ing a brief illness.
Bom in Habersham County on
February 1, 1908, she was the

Sarah English McConnell.

Jackson.
Mr. Knight was the father

illness.
Bom in Oconee County, S.C.,
on January 8, 1935, he was the
son of the late Lester and Izebell
Beaty Smith.
Mr. Smith was the father-in-
law of Melissa Eisel of Alto.

Dorothy F. Moore, 59, of
Ellijay, died Friday, December
5, 2008.
She was born on December
10, 1948, in Gwinnett County,
the daughter of the late Walter
Guy and Evelyn Marie Boyd
Leonard.
Mrs. Moore was the mother of
Robert K. Moore, Justina Ping,
Robert H. Moore Jr. and Jennifer
Moore, all of Maysville; and
step-sister of Marie Daniels of
Maysville.

Bishop Raymond Leon Wood,
54, of Martinez, died Tuesday,
December 2, 2008, at his resi
dence, following a sudden ill
ness.
Bom in Habersham County on
October 18, 1954, he was the son
of Bill and Lucille Darnell Wood
of Demorest.
Mr. Wood was the brother of
Lamar and Dot Wood of Alto.

Rex Boyd Brady, 69, of Toccoa,
died Monday, December 8, 2008,
at Stephens County Medical
Center, following an extended
illness.
Born in Banks County on
August 30, 1939, he was the son
of the late Otha and Monteen
Ausburn Brady. He was employed
in the manufacturing industry and
enjoyed collecting antiques. Mr.
Brady was preceded in death by
his first wife, Doris Brady.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Tammy and
Richard Burton, Toccoa; sons
and daughters-in-law, Tony
Brady, Ken and Sandy Brady,
and Randy Brady, all of Toccoa;
brother, Keith Brady, Greenville,
S.C.; five grandchildren; and one
great-grandson.
