Tlll* Exile Flower. An Indian warrior rested by a white man's cottage door, Its guardian treo and trellis’d flowers nil kindly bent him o’er; Upon his brow and silv’ry hair the evening radiance lay, And near him, like a sunbeam, was a merry child ut piny. The warrior’s form wns f hie,but it was not always so; In youth, none track’d the deer like him, or met like him the foe; A proud and haughty chief was he, and spoko but to command, Era white men had his birthright sought, or touch’d his father land. But all he loved had pass’d away, and, weary and forlorn, He oft would wonder near the men once held in hate and scorn; A sunny child soon won his heart, and taught bis lips to smile, And ott would please him with her mirth,as now she did the while. When weary with her wild-bee chase, she sought her mother's bower, And there, all radiant like herself, found each fair treasured flower, Then, bounding with the precious load, she sought the old man’s knee, And in a burst ot joy exclaim'd—“Oh, twine a wreath for me!’’ The warrior laid his trembling hand upon herglitt’- ring hair, And gently smooth ‘d each shining curl from off her forehead fair. And drawing nearer to his heart the half impatient child. He tried to breathe a blessing forth—then took the flowers, and smi led. His lingers soon had twined a crown lit for her sunny brow, And lifting high the wreath, lie cried—“ Behold the treasure now!” “But, lather,” said the child, “here’s one, one tiny stranger flower; 1 found it hid, I know not why, within the lichen bower. The old man pass’d liis trembling touch o’er all the blooming thing, And on his wither’d face a change itquickly sccm df o bring; The fragrance of that exile plant o’er all his spirit stole— It seemed to rouse old thoughts, und break the spell upon his soul. The faint, but well-known fragrance of that long forgotten flower Had for the warrior’s rugged heart strange witche ry and power ; For it had lived with him lar thence more near the setting sun, And now upon its bloom there fell the big tear one by one. Oh yes ! itbrough his early home fresh to his trou bled eye— The giant flood, the world of words, the free and sunny sky ; The wigwam by the ocean lake, the bright or twi light shore ; The bounding of the light canoe, the falling of the oar; The fragrance ol the forest path, when in the breezy air Os noon, he bounded forth, to start the panther from its lair; The crashing of the frighten'd deer among tho brushwood low. And plunging in the sullen stream that scarcely seemed to flow. The hunter’s track it brought again, the warrior’s stately trend, When chiet, he led liis haughty tribe, now numb ir ed with the dead ; The land he proudly call'd his own, when, like an eagle born, He trod its paths, and felt no aught but love, or hate, or scorn. Fast, fast it brought his troubled heart each long remember’d tie. And every sc. . as fresh a9 when it biess’d his youthful eye ; The treasured ways and words ot those that long in death had slept; “But all are gone !” he murmur’d forth, and bow'd his head and wept. Oh yes! the tiny flowret seem’d a link of that strange chain That binds our spirits, and, when touch’d, brings rushing buck again A thousand sacred memories of long-forgotten years— Os light and shadow, joy and grief, ot laughter and of tears.
