Rail Road Travelling. Twenty-nine of tho New York Rail Road Companies have recently made full returns of their doiugs to the State Engineer, under a law which requires such proceedings on their part, and a report made up therefrom by that officer to the Legislature. These returns present many very interesting facts, which bear directly on tho subject of the safety of rail road traveling— of course, tho conclusion being conclusive that these twenty-nine companies are a fair repre sentation of this entire class of roads. Wo find these facts mentioned in the Richmond (Vh.) Dispatch, which claims for its authority the Sy racuse (N. Y.) Journal. u Twenty-nine rail roads made reports. On these theso were transported, during the year, 7,440,653 passengers, and the whole number of miles they rode was 343,358,545. Twenty-six of these passengers—that is to say, one for ove fy 13,206,980 miles—were killed. The chances therefore are, that a man may ride on a rail road 528 times around tho globe before he will be killed. The law gives SSOOO damages for killing a man by negligence. At two cents a mile, tlie company will receive nearly $265,000 before a man is killed, and, of course, bo lore it shall have to pay the SSOOO. This is a very strong case in favor of the safety of rail road traveling; but tho Journal says a still stronger one might be presented—for “of the 26 persons who were killed, by far the larger pro portion lost their lives by their own careless ness. During tho year, there were killed of the employees of tho rail roads, 60, and of others, nei her passengers nor employees, 102, making a stun total of 162 deaths from this cause. Os this number, 18 were killed by jumping on and off the trains while iu motion—2o fell off, or else were thrown off the trains—76 were run over while standing or walking on the track. It appears from theso facts, that persons who get on the trains while they are at rest and who keep their seats while the train is in motion, are safer in a rail road car than they can be in any other mode of conveyance which will carry them more than four or five miles an hour. Theso state ments are curious, nn<l will serve to relieve tho fears of a great many worthy persons who have not yet become reconciled to the snorting of the iron horse, which, it seems, is worse than its kick. Three times the number of persons who, according to this statement, rode on these twen ty-nine rail roads, would about equal the popu lation of the United States. (23.000,000,) and three times the number of passengers killed would bo 78. Now, we kuow not how many persons in the United States are struck, yearly, by lightning, but wo should suppose at least 78. Taking that for the number, tho rail road pas senger stands about the same chance of being struck by lightning. The raging canawl” is tho only means of travel whose safety can be compared with the rail road, and that lets us on atnbout four miles an hour. Another item of intelligence which wo gather from this expose, is of interest, inasmuch as it shows that the support of rail roads depends far more on thoso who make short trips, than on those who take through tickets—that is to sny, that the way travel is the principal support of | the road. All theso millions of passengers aver- j aged only 77 per train, and the average distance was only 46 utiles. From the roport of the State Engineer, it ap pears that tho cost of transportation for each passenger, the trains averaging 77 passengers, is about half a cent per mile. “If one hundred passengers,” says tho Journal, “were carried on a train, nt one cent a mile, it appears quite cer tain that ono-halfof that amount would be ap plicable to dividends, and it is probable that within five years the rates from Buffalo will not exceed ono cent a mile.” A Modern Munelianscu. A book has lately appeared in Paris, entitled ’Twenty Years in the Phillippine Islands,” which, at first sight, out-Munchausens Mun chausen. Our acquaintance with it is derived from an elaborate review in Blackwood’s Mag azine for April. Tho author is a French medi cal man, who went out to Mauilla as surgeon on board a ship trading there; was led accidentally to remain; married, and finally settled in the intoriur of tho island. His stories of enormous boas, and of caymans still more gigantic com paratively, are almost incredible, and would bo entirely so, but that he verifies them by refer ence to other persons, and to corroborating cir cumstances. Some of theso Muuchauson narra tives are given in Blackwood. One is tho story of a cayman hunt, which occupied an entire day and exhausted.an incredible quantity of powder but ended in the death of tho proy at last, a monster measuring twenty-seven feet in length, and who had, thut morning breakfasted-on a horse, whom he took in eight mouthfuls, as was found on dissecting him. Wo should say of this, as of Major Longbow, “what d’y’e lay its a fib,” but that Mr. Russell, of the firm of Russell A Sturges, of Boston, is mentioned by the au thor, as present at the hunt, and is referred to for authority. The skull of the cayman in ques tion is also said to bo in some public museum in Boston. Now these facts aro easy to bo ver ified. We hold our incredulity in cheek, there fore till some of our cotemporarios in tho “Ath ens of America,” ascertain whether tho appa rent Munchausen told the truth or is at once tho most impudent, as well as greatest of liors. The Turks. Christendom is now revenging on the hum ble Turk the insults which the Saraconcastovor Europe. Each potentate in succession sends his representative to kick the dying lion. Tho last of theso official insulters has accomplished his mission with a studied elaboration that cannot be without a practical object, The Grand Viz ier is surrounded by his officers in their most splendid costume; ho has already succumbed to the Frenchman and to the Austrian, and gor geous robes and jewelled sabres glare and glit ter in the fullness of Saracenic splendor. In the midst of the Council, announced by the shouts of a mob of mongrel Greeks, enters and old man in a paletot with a shabby round hat, and walk ing-stick, and an insolent disregard of the splen dors which others affect; it ip Menzschikoff come to tell the Saltan how he must treat his Christian subjeots; how the Emperor of Russia is their true protector. Tho officers of the Sul tan are in trepidation; his foreign minister re signs; he asks the protection of the British fleet, and the Charge d’Affaires, who is locum tenenr at the timo of the Ambassador, sends to sum mon it, but it. will not come. Admiral Dtindas has not sufficient orders, and ho keeps aloof.— Tho fleet, however, is on its way, and Turkey is once more in tho midst of that crisis which re curs so repeatedly, which grows so much more serious each time, and tho repititiou of which aoems to familiarize Europe with the idea of Turkish ruin, until at last it shall bo effected suddenly, yet without shock to the moral feeling of the world. An English paper thus sums up the re sults to follow the introduction of the newly in vented Steam Plough,—Taking Caird’s esti mate, there are 14,000,000 acres in tillage; these are ploughed certainly once every year. The costal'the operation averages at least 10s. per acre, thuagivinga total 0f£7,000,000 perannum. This first machine of Usher doe* the work bet ter than by tho plough, for2s. Gd. per acre, or at 75 per ct. less cost. This saving would con sequently be, about £5,250,000, per annum. The labor of 50,000 men nne 100,000 horses re quired for this one operation, would be replaced and a saving in the consumption of corn effected* to at least 1,500,000 quarters, which would be thus reudered available for tho more direct wants of the community. Sandwich Islands. Tho Boston Journal says that a recent census of the Sandwich Islands exhibits some facte that possess startling interest, and illustrate in the most unmistakable manner the vital law that the inferior race must give way to the stronger. The present population of tlie seven islands forming the group is 80,611. The deaths during last year were 7943, while the births were only 1478; an average of six deaths to one birth. The foreigners number only 1757. This is an extraordinary state of things, and we doubt whether its parallel can be found in tho history of tlie world. In the time of Cook this people numbered 400,000 ; thus in seventy* years they have decreased 320,000. In 1836 they nu* bered 1 05,579; decrease in seventeen years near ly 28,000. Such a rapid decrease of native population is a deeply melancholy spectacle* At the present rate of decrease another genera tion will hardly have passed away ore this peo ple will be blotted from the face of tho earth.
