TSic New York Dailies. TheX. Y. Correspondent of tho X. 0. Bulle tin, makes the following n- lice of some of tho ! X. Y. Dailies. Wo publish it for its spiciness, rather than its correctness, which wo neither dispute nor endorse: “ The Tribune newspaper has been widened j in sheet and in column, so us to resemble the | Loudon Times. The imitation is very faithful. : and certuiuly the paper is vastly improved in typographical appearance. There is a deal of talent in the editorial management, but what can tdieut do with a mill-stone weight of “isms” about its neck. Since the autumnal election, and t under tho fraternal feeling induced by a com- ! icon eo operation against municipal corruption, j all tho newspapers of the city have greatly im proved. The Times l have often spoken of and j and have nothing now to offer upon it. The Post j having lost its necessity of parti/.anship, has , become more rhetorical in style and dignified in tone. A workman is known by his chips, and ; it is said that its editor, Mr. Pigelow, is no lon ger surrounded with political caricatures, but is | up to his knees i:i magazines and the effu sions of belles lettres, The Commercial Advor I tiser still reigns supremo over its little empire of Knickerbockers, who believe implicitly in its constitutional prerogative, and not only in its maxium that tho editor of that paper can do no i wrong, but also iu the line “a t*/ ward the star of , empire takes its way.” The Express has Jas. Brooks at home once more, with his congression- j Jil harness thrown into the lumber-room : his brother Erastus broods as thoughtfully as ever j over his darling topics of political economy, ; while that “ fust brick” and “ übiquitous bon liomrae,” Jim Otis, looks after the department of ! luu, fancy and literature. Tho Journal of Com ; inerco continues to devote a column per diem to : tho uso of old fogy subscribers, who have some j communications to impart to the world of a , startling nature concerning church matters, mu- | uicipal affairs, the streets, the ferries, and tho J tariff. This latter topic will bo the death of tho j editors some day ; it has killed very hale men i in its prime. As for tho Courier, that continues tho blanket sheet par excellence. For stowing ; nvvay under spring carpets, housewives consider it invaluable ; while somo mothers importune j their husbands to fetch a copy home to spread . on tho floor for tho babby to play upon. Col. J Webb is said still to vviito vigorously for its col umn,(miud you,in the singular, not its plural.) L nmjso me times reminded by mygroceryman, when 1 purchasing cheese, or somo portable articlo ca pable of being wrapped up, that such papers as the Sun, Morning Star and National Democrat, ure in existence. Now that Col. Fuller is ii” more troubled with tho keys of the Xatioual Storehouse, at Brooklyn, he will bo able to de vote more time to bis “ Mirror.” The paper has the prestige of name about it, and with more capital in the way of money for a gay printing house, etc. etc., would soon become a very lu crative journal. The Herald find no mourners for Mr. Bennett’s continued absence in Europe. Tho Hudsons prove themselves industrious and agreeable writers; and if the editorials some times box the compass, it is because a few stray pons of James Gordon's have been left about the sanctum. As usual, the printers of this paper are in league with some opthalmio institute.” The Supply aml Consumption of Gold. Tho London correspondent of the National In telligencer has the following abstract of anew treatise on this interesting subject : M. Chevalier, of Paris, has published a most interesting essay upon tho gold question, which has been translated into English, and widely circulated hero. The writer anticipates a fall iu tho value of gold, arising from a supply far exceeding any possible demand. Jle thus con siders the several countervailing causes suggest ed by those who entertain views opposed to his own : “They maintain that there are vast outlet.’ for all the gold which the now mines and gold fields can supply. They rely on tin* l i t that 1 at present several countries are adopting gold as tho basis of their monetary systems, and | the}’ cite the United States of America and Prus sia as examples in point. They lay stress on : tho rapid increase of population) consequent on \ the protracted peace the world enjoys, and ar gue that this increase of population willnocessi tate a corresponding demand for coin, and for | tho luxuries and ornaments to which gold is ap- ! plied. They remind us that now States and j settlements are being founded in regions which have hitherto, like Australia, been doomed t • solitude. Wo are told of countries still burbar ous, like tho central provinces of the Russian , Empire, which are awakoning to civilization and of others in decadence, like Turkey, which : nro being restored to high civilization. Lastly, \ they rely on the general march of progress j throughout the world, which is augmenting the comforts of mankind, and multiplying and ex- j tending the refinements of luxury. The iuovi- i table consequence, it is contended, must be a progressive increase of consumption of precious metals in general, and of gold in particular.” Admitting tho proscnco of these causes, the author proceeds to attempt some estimates of j their power. He calculates that tho United | States may absorb £20,000,000. To Russia ho “allows a wide margin,” and estimates her ad ditional want of another £20,000,000. As for Turkey, Australia and her dependencies, Cali fornia, Oregon, and the several regions of Cen tral America, wo shall exceed all the bounds of possibility if wo suppose,-for tho sake of argu ment, (what does appear to me a great exagge ration,) that during tho next ton years” they in ay absorb for their metallic circulation £lO,- 000,000. Ou the subject oi tho precious metals employed iu articles of luxury, M. Chevalier | furnishes somo curious particulars, showing | clearly that “the increase in tlio manufacture of j articles of silver and gold is very slow.” On | tho whole tho total quantity of silver employed ; in tho manufacture of articles of luxury is rath er diminishing than increasing. As for gold its j consumption has only begun to rise within the ; last few years. No year subsequent to 1800 ; has ever reached tho figure ol 1826, which i was 8,405 ounces. The extra quantity of gold! required for coinngo to keep pace with the rn- j pid increase of population in Europe, “in ten < years might possibly amount to 60,000 kilo- j grammes,” something more than £8,000,000. i The amount of these now outlets the author cai culates as follows : Kilogrammes. For additional coin in countries adopt ing gold for thoir country 600,000 For the requirements of the art*, jew | dry, *e. 80,000 | For the increasing population 60,000 i j In all, in ton years 740,000 i He thus estimates the production of gold dui* j ing the next ten years : “Wo have seen that, on the lowest estimate, ; the annual increase of production, as compared with 1847, is 160,000 kilogrammes. In ten ! years it would amount to 1,600,000 kilogrammes. If we deduct therefrom tho abovo exaggerated ; estimate of 740,000 kilogrammes for new out j lets, thore would still remain a clear suplus of 860,000 kilogrammes, worth about three mil j lions of francs of our present coinage, or ono j hundred and twenty millions sterling. This j I surplus, which might be limited for the first three | or four years, ou account of the metallic drain. 1 created by tho United States and Russia, would .-well rapidly thereafter, and would go on in creasing alter tho first period of ten years had | expired. “W'c may, therefore, anticipate the arrival on tho general market of a larger quantity of gold than can find a market at the present value of that metal. Iu other words, wo may look for a fall.” The extent of the gold fields, and the proba bility of gold being soon obtained from tho quartz rock itself, seems to M. Chevalier to pre clude any possibility of the speedy exhaustion of the present supplies. iiuudoa Post Oaicc. Once more tho Post Office needs to be enlarg ed. When the present structure was completed twenty four years ago, it was believed that it | was then largo enough to meet the business of the department for a century to come. But we have quickened all iho wheels of life in n most wondrous way since 1529. Men esteemed wi in their generation were then laughing at the enthusiasts who dreamt of ocean steamers ami sagely sneering at tho idea of a locomotive en gine. Electric lights—electric telegraphs—half penny steamers—penny postage were unconceiv ed ; nav, a leading Review about that liiuo de clared that none but an idiot would think of al lowing himself to bo shot along at a rate of fifteen miles an hour. The labors of tho Post Office now, and in 1829, are scarcely compara ble. In 1840 if was said with an expression of wondering surprise that 40,000 letters left Lon don daily—and tho entire number passing through the office amounted to 76,000,000 per annum. The next year, ht tho reduced rate, they more than doubled; and every year tho increase has risen higher and higher. During the last six years the average iuerea.se amounts ! to no less tintn 2GO,0()0 letters and 1 1,000 news papers daily. It is estimated that the number of loiters which will pass through the General Post Oflico in the present year w ill be about 95,- 000,000 —the newspapers nearly 2,000,000 — over and above the numbers which passed through it in 1846, though tho reduced postage law hud then been in operation for some years. What a striking expression of tho national pro- ! gress and its literary activity! —London Athen- i ixum. Slilp Timber For Frauce. Capt. Lucas, an agent sent out by tho Gov ernment of France, is now here, wishing to receive proposals for the furnishing nnddoliver cry of 1,000 cords of white oak per month, saw j ed and split, suitable for cooper stuff, and 7,000 j knees for vossols—to bo delivered at any point !on the Canal and Railroad. The timber is to j bo transported by the Canal to Alexandria, j and shipped at that port direct for France. l)r. i R. S. AloKaig has accepted tho agency lbr ! sbippiug the same, lie will convey it to Alex ! undriaia his line of Canal boats, and contract : with other parties for its conveyance to France. I He expects to ship six hundred tons per week j from Cumberland, and send out one ship load j per month to France. This will take nn iin | nienso amount ot our most valuable timber, and many an acre that is now clothed with a super abundance of trees will be entirely divested. Timbered land commanded heretofore but a j nominal value, but as the finer qualities of lum ber are nowin great demand for boat and ship building, the lands must take a rise. Those I holding them will eventually obtain large prices I fur their possessions. Cumberland (J ld.) Telegraph. SPRING AND SUMMER CLOTHING, FOB 1853, GEO. S.
