We learn by dispatch to Messrs. Padklford,

hence for New York, arrived yesterday in 64
hours from this port.
fid” There’s a dead pino on the south side
of the Park, which might bo cut down by some
inconsiderate person, and lest that should bo j
done, wc hero proto..*- against any such rash no*?.
Let it fall of itself. Peril / t it may fall on tho
railing and thus test its strength—if the railing
should succumb, advantage can bo taken of tho
event, by putting a stronger panel in its place.
But seriously speaking, is it not gross negli
gence to leave theso rotten old troes in tho
Park, to fall at any moment, and unannounced
upon tho heads of visitors to Forsyth Place ?
We suggest that placards warning the visitor j
of tho danger be posted upon all the treos which
look threatening. Wo can seo no objections to
this moasure, for it is not right that any person
should run the risk of being killed or crippled
without duo notice. Let the placards then bo
printed—they would not cost more than four or
five times as much as the cost of removing tho
danger, and they would inculcate prudenco and
discretion in our citizens.
fE£3” One of our city papers having credited
an article to the Columbus Times and Sentinel,
which it did not write, tho Times says :
“Wearonot responsible for tho article en
titled (< l*an air Line a Wind Line .’”
No “demonstration” is needed to convince n
of the enterprise, intelligence, hospitality, or
future prospects of Savannah. We rejoice in
her prosperity, applaud her generosity and ex
ult in hor enterprise, which has done more to
developo the resources of Georgia, and give her
a name and character in tho Union than ail tho
windy editorials of all our contemporaries.”
fid” The Oglethorpe /ny'fnHry were very hos

Every Day Scripture Readings, with Brief Rc
views and Practical Observations, for the use
of Families and Schools. By Rev. John L.
Blake, P. 1). New York- <sno. P. Putnam
<fc Cos. Cloth, 460 pp.
It is not for those who, caring little for the
style and character of a book, seek tho enter
taining and tho excitingjnor tothoso who,with
in tho province of good taste,exclusively devote
themselves to literary productions, that tho ti j
tie of this book will prove attractive; but to
those who, knowing the higher demands of our j
spiritual nature,choose to go to the fountain head 1
of divino truth, rather than resort to the fountain
head of pure knowledge fur lasting profit and
pleasure. There are few, very few daily reader?
of the Bible, and fewer read it with much profit,
because it is read without study or system. If
there were more bible readers, there would bo
fewer bible disputants, and wo especially com
mend this book to the daily notice of thoso who
though they are modest enough in speaking of
science generally, nro always ready most learn
edly, to speak their doubts in relation to di
vine truth.
Dr. Blake's work is a summary of the bi
ble, consisting of 237 chapters. Each chapter
disposes of a single subject; then follows are
view in questions, and then some practical ob
servations. It will prove a useful book in fami
ly instruction and worship, and a valuable aid
to teachers in common schools.

This is the somewhat singular title of a hand
some and delightful little volume of exquisito
writing, comprising a few sketches in prose, and
several poetical gems, written with a desire to
ameliorate tho condition of the poor and the
rich: to induce a better appreciation of the vir
tues of each, and to shorten the distance between
them, which tho author thinks arises in part
out of an artificial state of society, it belongs to
that pleasant genus of hooks, which may be read
at odd iatcrvals,dumanding little else of the rea
der than to heentertained ns he goes along, and
making little pretension to deep study or ex
tensive erudition. It is a book of and fur the
heart rather than the bend. Tho work is hand
somely illustrated by Ei.r iott, Dari ; v, Ki n

The London Times in noticing the
birth of anew sprig of royalty, makes a remark
which would seem to ho forbidden by even J
than royal etiquette. Tho Time c-L-cnv. very
drilly that tho interesting evi ntlins occurred so
frequently, the la to recurrence of it, cannot he
considered of any political importance—the
succession to the ihrono ha- already been am
ply secured Ac. Ac. The fact i-. the Times
gives the young Prince the cold shoulder. But
we deny that the event has no political impor
tance; how many a babe, prettier, and smarter
nod rosier and chubbier than tho r val bant
ling will be forced to live ou “short commons”
from tho time of its infant carol, till that can I
shall be changed to a croning and mumbling tone
in order tbut the Prince may roil in luxury,
and Lave around him more fripp ry for back
and stomach, than a thousand sons of labor
would need to make them perfectly happy! If
we were a subject of her mijcty the Que*-n, \.
should look upon the birth of every new royal
baby as a national calami'y.

Wo saw the red-sun fall Inflow tho hill,
And golden-masted argosies that lay
Teeming with riches from the Orient,
In slumbrous sha<low, silent glide away.
And o’er tho harvest of the summer's primo,
There came a buzz of many glistoning wings;
And tin* dusk twilight laden with deep dreams,
Kissed the v. arm earth to goutlo slumbering*.
Then the dense forest wrnpl in purple shade,
Mournfully rocked ita tawny bride to rest;
M lule from the voices of the Dryad-choir,
bwelled the doop music to tho mountain-crest.
We heard Ihe viewless, dripping dews descend,
And the low plashing by tho pebbled stream;
And pregnant mists slow o’er the valley rolled,
j Wearing the features of a potent dream.
1 And thus, my friend, who over lingered near,
Rehearsed his quiet musing* as wo lay;
Lighted by stars that one by ono appeared,
Soothing the slumbers ofdcpnrted day.
“ Wo talked of woman,” musingly said ho,
“She who hath chained mysteriously the world;
And won the Looping of its ono great heart
From thedark gloom wherein by Time ‘twashurled.
“ I think of woman as tho wanton wind,
Swooping tho hnrp-Kolian of tho soul;
Laughing and sighing, sobbing o'er its keys,
Shaping its melodics by strange control.
She builds serial palaces at dawn,
’Mid April smiling? from her pleasant ryes;
And garlanded like May she comes to wear,
Her mnny triumphs won by tender sighs.
‘Mid braided tresses of tho raven’s hue,
In glossy splondour rolling loosely down;
Or, ’mid tho summer shade of golden locks,
Wreathing their sylphino riches in a crown.
By the clear lustre of the starry eyes,
Flashing a glory from their sable deep;
Or, by the lucent loveliness of bluo
Suffu. ed in tenderness, to smile or weep.
With the pure ripeness of the rural lip.
Moist with the rosy dews of love's young morn :
1 blushing and vicing with the cheek's soft bloom,
Olowing with dimples boauteously born.
Thus doth she come along the scented lawn.
Kissing the daisies with her airy tread;
Warming the zephyrs with her pleasant breath, I
Wearing tho sun-light on her noble head.
Fbe comes and rmiles as doth the April sun.
Through the clear brilliance of her jewoled tears;
And w ith the ininbow of impassioned hopes,
Colors tlm vesture of the future years.
She holds tho bridle of the world in hand,
And diligently woo? its giant power;
She smiles and wins, and guides the strength of man
And glories in her grand and secret dower.
She holds the keys to dynasties and crowns,
Mocks the chained giant of a sceptred reign;
.Starts at the tumults kindle,lat her breath,
O’or turns a throne to build it up again.
She frowns a kingdom down nt morn, and weeps;
And soothes the spirit w ith her evening prayers ;
Bbc frames a silence for her secret woo,
And weaves a remedy for other's cares.
Flic smooths the pillow of the weary one,
A\ itli cheerful tenderness she softens pain ;
Her gentle presence wops the fainting heart
To life, to hope, to happiness again.
She chocks the rude and clammy hand of death,
And shrouds itc terrors from the passing soul;
And ’mid the music of her quickened breath,
Her prayers bear herald-incense to the goal.
Hog and Magog.
A London correspondent, of the New York
Times has tho following paragraph in a late let
ter :
“A politico-religious brochure, entitled. ‘The
coming struggle among the nations of tho earth. 1
<.r the political events of the next fifteen years,
described in accordance with tho prophecies in
Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Apocalypse, showing
the important position Great Britain will occupy
during and nt the end of tho awful conflict,’ has
made a considerable .sensation here, and has ra
pidly attained its sixteenth thousand in circula
tion. Tho authorship has been attributed to
the Rev. Dr. Camming, one of the most clo- ’
quent and able of our dissenting ministers- j
and tho great opponent of Cardinal Wiseman.
Tho writer predicts thcdownfall of Austria, and
the consequent destruction of tho Papacy:
Russia is to be checked in her attempt to oc- j
cupy Judea; America is to send her forces to |
assist Great Britain in preparing Ibr the greatest
physical battle that was ever fought on the
struggling earth. The Anglo Saxon race are
to be finally triumphant, and the children of
Abraham are to be restored to their father-land.
America is indeed to bear a large part in this
terrible conflict, in which, according to the
writer’s showing, ‘the chains of civil nnd ec
clesiastical despotism, which priestcraft had
forged for and fastened round the human soul,’
are to be broken. Blackwood thinks the pam
phlet of sufficient importance to devote several
pages of his April number to exposing the fallacy
and absurdity of the predictions.”
Adulteraf 1011 of CoflVe.
The following paragraph from a London pa
per, will give our readers an idea of the oxtent
to which the adulteration of certain articles is
practised in England:
“Iu the course of the proceedings in the Bank
rupt Court on Friday, sorno curious statements
were elicited in roferenco to the adulteration of
coffee with chicory. The bankrupts had been
very large manufacturers of the so-called ‘cof
fee.’ and attributed their stoppage, to tho Trea
sury order prohibiting adulteration. In reply
to questions from the Commissioner, they stated
that when the trade was iu a healthy state, and
they were able to get 9d. to lOd. per lb. for their
so-called coffee, they made it up half chicory
and half coffoc; but that when the competition
of other houses (!) had reduced the price to 6d.,
it was mado up 14 ox. of chicory a nd 2 oz. of
coffee to the pound. It was not, however, asked j
how much chicory was in tho chicory.”
Presidential Statistics.
Since tho formation of tho United States
Constitution the people have elected twelve per
sons to the Presidential chair, all of whom are !
now dead with the exception of Martin Van I
Huron aud General Pierce. During tho same
period of time, thirteen persons havo occupied 1
the position of Vice-President, but four of whom
arc now living. Martin Van Huron, John Ty

President who lived longest after vacating the ‘
Presidential chair, was John Adams, who sur- j
vived that period twenty-five years. Ili.s son

next to him in that respect both living nineteen
years. Mr. Polk died within threo months af
ter he loft the scat of Government, and General

ter he returned to the shades of Mount Vernon, j
Among tho Vice-presidents, Aaron Burr lived j

same period of time. It is a singular coinoi- j

in the days of the Revolution, expired on the
4th of July: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson,

dying on tho same anniversary, being the fif
