The Cotton Metropolis.
Mathematics is another br inch of study con
siderably in yojfue among the more thinking of
the * irking-people; and ilurii g tho long hours !
passcu nratchiiig the twining , iroaiis and whirl
ing pinnies, it may bo well cone m'-h\ th**.fc tlio*r
politically nml speculatively inclined muse al- 1
most unceasingly on social and industrial ques* |
tions, frequently arriving at conclusions, the fal- i
lacy of which a very * ll ll o scientific instruction
would have enabled them to avoid, but to which
they cling with an obstinate devotion which
mils argument an 1 fact alike at naught. The i
“.i; <JTi! idol f this oltss of th • people is h.. I,
.dry, and shrewd. Their notions are narrow,
but clear. They possess strong convictions and
great earnestness, with a tendency to venora
tiou, and a serious ami religious bearing. In
these respects, indeed, the northern cotton pop- (
illation possess many Scotch qualities; but they
lack one of tho best—the general ambition off
the working-man north of the Tweed to bring i
Ills son up to a loftier sphere than ho fills him
self. it may be observed, by the way, that stu
dious and thinking individuals ot the close
specified are almost always the product of a
light and tranquil occupation.
Among tho iron-workers, tho cool-ininera, and
so forth, such instances ro very rare. The
mus’ le3aro developed with them, hardly ever
the brain ; and eases of brutal outrage are com
mon in iron and coal districts, particularly the
former, which are never heard of among the
weaker and the meeker toilers by tho mule and
the loom.
Music is another favourite amusement of the
Lancashire cotton population. The country lms
produced very fine voices, particularly sopranos;
mid tho people seoui to lmvo an inborn relish for j
vocal music, with a peculiar capability for part
singing. One of the most popular metropolitan
concert and oratorio sing‘i sos tho day, Mrs.
.Sunderland, was a Manchester mill-girl; and
the last generation still remember the delicious
ballad-singing of Mrs. Knyvett, nee l>ebornh
Travers, and brought up in an Oldham factory.
In tho country-mills, a choral society or a band,
or both, is common: and the rural gatherings
which in summer take place of the choirs of
different churches, both in Lancashire and
Yorks biro, are d--scribed by uiusieiaus who have
been present as being, under the circumstances,
pel feet phenomena of art. At these reunions,
passages from the oratorios of Handel and Hay
dn are performed with a vigour and freshness |
of stylo, and a deep sentiment and veneration
for the music, which are described as absolutely
marvellous. In Manchester, however, the pop
ular taste is certainly not . > highly cultivated;
and tho musical saloons, in which drink is as ,
much looked after as melody and harmony, arc
not atn >ngt the most promising of the popular
places of amusement. Yet these establish
ments nre full of character; and we
know no resorts in Manchester where so
true an idea may b. so soon formed of’fhe
amusements, habits of speech and thought, the
tastes and tho minor social peculiarities of the
average workers of the mills, than in these
places of evening entertainment. Tho hotter
part of tho op-r itivo population do not indeed I
frequent tho saloons, mid the auditory are gen
erally young but they are sure to be thorough
Manchester folk - mill ban U from five years of
ago upwards. Saturday night is the L -t time ,
for visiting ono of these characteristic establish
ments. They abound in nil sizes ami degrees ,
ol importance and celebrity, f*otu va.-t hulls,
got up w ith considerable decorative skill, to ,
mere dens of beer .-liop parlours. Ono of the j
principal and most favoured is tho Apollo Sa
loon, ui tho London Hoad. The .spectacle to bo
feon in its vicinity, about nine o’clock on a Sa
turday night, i- not a thing to be missed bv
visitors of Manchester. The London Hoad is a
vast thoroughfare, intersecting a purely opera
tive portion of the town. It is noted for its
cheap shops, and tho extraordinary variety of
articles which can bo procured from it.* general
dealers. On Saturday night, however, the
street takes completely tho u-p-- t of a fair. Tho
broad pavements aro crammed with stalls,
heaped with cheap eatables, animal uud vege
table, with h msehold matters, an 1 with oonrse
articles of attire, Great stream* of unprotected
gas dicker over tho booths, and similar pennons
blaze at tho doors of every shop. Tho crowd is
vast. All working Manchc-t. r seems to have
assembled for the purpose ot laying in its Sun
day provisions: and the gabbling din of the
universal chaffering mingles with tho cries of
tho stall-keepers proclaiming tho quality of
their goods, the shouts of tho drivers of vehi
cles coming slowly through the crowd, and the
laughing screams of band.* of mill-girls calling
out to each other, uud joking with their friend*.
You can hardly make your way into a shop; and
the public-houses, streaming with light, are
literally choked with customers, while tho
swinging-doors of tho pawnbrokers have no
moment of rest. Through this chaos of buying
and selling, of pushing and struggling, you
make your way to tho illuminated sign us the
Apollo Saloon, and find yourself paying your
twopence to a functionary who is supportc I, or
perhaps watehod over, by a policeman. The
cheek he give- you entitles you to two-ponny
worth of malt liquor; so that if you consume
this, your entrance i- gran*. .Mmiming a br.m I
yet step slaircnso. you sudd, nly emerge into a
loug, narrow room; from which, as the doors
open, will burst upon you a allocatin'’
volume of tobacco smok.*, a Ww AL ring
glare of light, abab. l of tongue-, and a c oifii - -d
vision of a crammed together a.-.cmblug* of
working men and w .... , -t-, • nvu •! i„g.
and tho men an l\.• *.i drinking from every
species of vessel- and.. pewter, ami stoneware.
The room is papered with a deign imitative of
carved wood work, in the centre, on the right
hand side, is the bar from which the •order*’
nre dispensed by active female waiters* who
have much to do to squeeze themselves between
tho tables—which are very long anil cuiiously
narrow, each one flanked by forms for the com-
pany. At the top ol t!e room is an absurdly
■mail theatre, tli? pr iscen u n fitted in the ordi
nary style, but the scale ot dimensions being so
insignificant, thut the bonds of tho perform rs
reach to what is called; in technical I ‘l ; ,
the‘flics.’ The orchestra beie-ath con si.-to j• 1-
haps of two or three fiddles and a piano, and
the performance, it may be, going on. It con
sists either of a dramatic entertainment, of i >-
lated dances, or of alternate part and comie
pinging—all verv primitive in their style, an 1
not a little coarse. Tho ‘play* 1 n : much
above the ealibro of a ('i\ <l.■ w n h-fair tr.ig;>!v.
It generally posses- a anguinary tyrant, with
an army of two •retainers;’ u grimly ; who
rises in the last .scene amid l-tno-lire ; two op
pressed lovers, the victim • d'tlie tyrant; a right
ful aud a wrongful heir; uni, ab.n . all, a comic
peasant and hi - sweetheart. Theso last delight
theaudionco: they dance hornpipesing funny
tiuos about being married and having a family;
make local allusions, which are ctiuHit at very
sharply; ami outrage Ml the laws of dramatic
propriety by asking the sped* tor. riddles. Tho
musical part of the performance consists very
often of Ethiopian si-.-nailers. .f whom th
people never appear to tire; of local - mg- in lo
cal dialect, sung in character; with an uasion
al common-place sentimental ditt.v, while some
times there occurs a song no! <d tho nw.-t de
corous character. This last, hi-wevor, is de
cidedly an exception to the rule, banting is
much relished, and all sorts of hornpipe.- are tho
staple performances. Wo have . nan ‘artist’
dressed in front as a . n ilor, and behind as a
soldier, with a mark, that he always appear
ed to bo facing the audience, m ike the hi; .
the evening, by fir ‘ gmng through a number of
military evolutions, and singing The Brit',ah
Grenadier*, with a drum; and then swinging
himself round, and appearing in th * character
of a‘true British sailor,’ in which h > sang Th
Hay of Biscay, tw ) or three of Jbbdiu's aougs,
and ended with ano st vig *o;i.- naval hornpipe.
