E FriiUy Aftaraoun, *4ay 3, 1353. Sc l'l rat nii<l Lat Mcsdame* Rrowu, Mott and Stone. In publishing the following description of the personnel of these notorious, rather tbnn famous ; u* pious of woman’* rights, wo iriuft not be i.udera o<l ■.* ui’ing and abetting tiro cause. Me :.ro opposed to this modern ism, which pro poses to tdevato (’() woman to a loftier*sphere through a vaiu hope to strengthen her influence augment her power and add to hw.* bjppiaess. The inevitable consequence of the success • f this newborn ism will be, to rob woman of tho tw • groat elements of her power,—modesty, and ten derness. In woman’* weakness lies hor strengtn; iu her helplessness is her might—in her mo le. - ty. ami the sanctity which dwells in an lnround her, is ens ! led tho secret of her iu.l .once ovor the sterner fox; and the day v. heu the. are Liken from her, she become • a thing of common place—her sceptre will bo broken, her throno overturned, her wondr >us potency gone. The whole tendency of the doctrine, aud wo defy contradiction, is to make men of to blot out tho name of woman from tho book of hu manity, and thoso who are curious to look ahead, aud to soo what this country will bo whou wom an’s rights (as they aro at present asserted) shall be in tho ascendant, havo but to imngin ■ a country of men, to havo the desired picture, boforo them. The mind revolts from such a contemplation with loathing and disgust. The women whoso names appear in the caption, i wc view as misguided, but good-iuleutioned i enthusiast*—restless spirits to whom content is a stranger; who thirst, and long and crave for excitement, and perhaps sympathy, nnd having found a thread which happens to bo blight at one ond, would fain pursue it with ‘hat mad and rash enthusiasm whose end will be to defeat the ; very object which it seeks. We do not know it tu bo so, but we venture the hypothesis, that the I firesides of Mesdames Brown, Mott and Stone aro not what they should be, or these ladies could find at homo ample employment for their talents, a sufficiency of objects to bo attained, and bettor occupation than public declamation in support of new-fangled theories. There is scarcely any social circle but ha* iu it one or more mcn-womcn. Women who des pise tho conveutioualities of society; who set j outre fashions; w ho coolly stop over the barriers ! which uicu in their respect and admiration for their sex love to see around them; women who say bold things, and dare bold deeds; who aro i never embarrassed, or confused in th presence of men, let their number* be what they may, 1 and who blush by rule and effort rather than by i intuition, if indeed the art is not to them a lost ( one. Such women are “vomeus-righh:”-woraen in embryo—half finished aud nascent specimens of tho new order of creatures. What i.~ their iu- ‘ fluenco? Nothing! What is the respect they ! inspire ? None! save tho outward show which j the gallantry of men cannot refuse even to the outline of woman. It is not among or of such, ! that truo men seek wives; and they pay the pen alty of their folly, usually by getting a booby for a protector. Woman’s mission is already the highest upon ; earth. Slio holds now the balance of power. It is hers to mako heroes or pigmies. It is hers ! to check tho rising waves of men’s impetuous passions, to set a guard over his inclinations, mould his character, console him in defeat, in spire him to renewed effort, urge him to achieve, and be to him alwaysa guardian angel directing his steps in proper paths, nnd leading him to those goals, on tho road to which w ithout her guiding and inspiring hand he wou! ! faint, nnd . fall, aud leave his bones to blench by the way side. Tho women who control this world, arc not tho Lucretia Motts, the Antoinette Browns, and tho Lucy Stones of tho ngc. They are not the women who mount rostrums and make speeches. The powerful, the eloquent, the great ! women, stand modestly iu niches, directing ! with a tender glance of tho eye, appealing wit.i upturned gaze, commanding by a gentle wave i of the hand, and protected by the white veil of modesty which, encircling their temples, droop to their feet. But we aro detaining tho reader from the promised paragraph. The editor of the Syracuse (N. Y.) Chronicle (who is opposed to womens rights,) has paid a visit to tho advocates of the j “ism,” ami gives tho following account of his impressions. We publish it to show that wo man is warring against her/elf, when f-l.e/triv.-.-, to shake off her natural attributes; and we are pleased to know thnt it was tho influence ol these attributes which call *d forth the follow ing lnngunge. Tho editor forgot the orator in tho woman. He savs : “We defy anybody to produce n woman in any position whatever, who presents a b -ttcr , model of feminino grace and propriety, than Antoinette L. Brown in her pub!i • a ldiv‘ . Before Mrs. Lucretia M tt, in h r DuL ii and inorul grandeur, tho rudest gaiu-sayer D hushed in respectful silence, and rowdyi.-m itself becomes humanized and g-nll •. And a to Lucy Stone, the music of her cl picm .nidi fies her very ‘bloomer.’ \V- well remenib r the first time we wore brought under her imlrei It was at the Woman’s Rights Con\. \>n in i this city. Strongly opposed to some of the po-i tions thcro taken, and prejudiced, in j irticular, agninst this wholesale sortie of women up >ntho ; public rostrum, which hud not sccim and to us their appropriate arena, wo were not particularly propitiated by Lucy Stone’s dnss (of a pattern at which our tado has always rt voltcd,) when she made ber appearance on the stand. Not long, however, bad her low, sweet, searching tone (’that excellent thing in w man*) fallen upon our car, and into our heart, 1 dLre every particle of our hostility was melted away, at least for tho time, and her supremacy was com plete. When she ciosed and sat down, after having held an immense audience, for more than an hour, in breathless attention, wo turned away, in state of subdued perplexity, saying •oftly to ourselves : ‘Well, whether ice like it or not, little woman heaven made you a:, ora tor r The Charleston Boat failed to arrive last evening, and wc are consequently without a northern mail. It has been so long a time since we had to mako a similar announcement, wc free by excuse the present failure. It has enabled us to lay before the reader several valuable nr ticles in placo of news details.
