pM* On account of business engagements,
wo were unable to be present at St. John’s
Church this morning. We have, however, ob
tained from a friend, information which enables
us to give a brief notice of the occasion.
The services of Consecration were conducted
according to the order laid down in the book of
Common Prayer.
The Bishop was assisted b)* Rev. Mr. Font,
Rev. Ms. Scott, and Rev. Mr. I.sqersoll. who
read the lessons for the occasion, the appro
priate prayers, and. the creed. The discourse
was delivered by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Elliott,
from
“ And, 10, 1 am with you always, even unto tbe end
of the world.”
The introduction was a touching end appro
priate tribute to the worth of the former pas
tors of St, John’s. It was twelve years ago
that the Bishop dedicated the first and more
humble edifice to the worship of Almighty God.
The little society then worshipping there did
not hope to soon to rear a temple like this, but
by the faithfulness and self sacrificing toil of
those who have ministerod in holy things, and
by the geuerous offerings of the worshippers;
and more than all, by the blessing of Him who
promised to bo alway with the church—this
Christian society now rivals its mother in the
number of its worshippers, and surpasses her in
the beauty of its Sanctuary.
Tho first minister of this church was repres
ented as a striking example of ministerial life.
The late pastor was alluded to in appropriate
terms, as a faithful minister to his flock, to
whoso usefulness tbe church and tho community
were willing with him to boar testimony. These
two ministers who sacrificed themselves for the
c hurch will ever be remembered with affection
ate gratitude by the religious community.
The sermon was designed to boa defence of
the faith of the Episcopal Church. To tho
question suggested by the text—ls this a branch
of the church with which our Lord has promised
to bo?—it was answered, that it has the signs of
a church in these respects; it has tho sacred
Canon in its purity—it has the doctrines, and
tho sacraments, preserved and duly administer
ed, and it has a ministry that can be traced to
the Apostles. The Bishop closed his discourse
with an impressive address to tho clergy.
The impressive services of this occasion were
witnessed by a largo congregation.
In tho rapid advancement which is making
in other respects in our city, wo rejoice that the
xuouns and opportunities of religious improve
ment are increasing. Wo congratulate the So
ciety which is to worship iu St. John's on the
happy prospects which are before them, believ
ing that succoss must follow religious effort
which is so generously made in behalf the com”
munity.
St. Andrew’i Hall.
We regret to learn that this tine Hall has be
come so unsafe, that repairs are considered ab
solutely essential, in order to its occupancy in
future.
Wo were present some months since ut a Con
cert in St. Andrew’s, and wero tempted half a
dozen times during the evening, to vacate the
premises, as we did not liko a certain singular,
crackling noise, which was not down in tho
programme, but which wo expected would soon
briug something down on us. Tho fear of ridi
cule, however, kept us in our seat, our neigh
bors enjoying a laugh at us, for even venturing
to think that the Hall was unsafe, or that tho
** noise” was any thing elso “ than tho boys out
on the side walk.” We felt well assured then
that something was wrong; though we had
never heard such sounds before, (nor want to
hear thorn again,) all tho logic in tho world
could not prevent us from translating them by
the word danger; and it now seems that was
the corroct interpretation. Our critique next
morning on tho coucort. was not very lucid o
8 itisfactory.
The Charleston lloiti m and ilie North

The Metamora, the relief bout on the Savan
nah and Charleston line, is disabled by tho
breaking of her shaft. Tho Calhoun, of the
same line, is laid up, her boiler having given
out, and she will not ho ready fur service for
six weeks, according to tho Georgian —(the
Republican says six months) -tho result of all
which is very disagreeable to tho press in par- !
ticular, and everybody in general.
Tho Company have done everything in their
power to remedy the evil, and have placed the |
steamer Jasper on the line to alternate with tho ,
Gordon between Savannah and Charleston *
until the Mctamora shall bo again ready for
duty. We know nothing of tho sailing qualities !
of the Jasper, but we hope she will exert lit r
self to bring us our papers in good time. The
inconvenience of the new arrangement, if any
there be, will not be of longer duration, it is
thought, than a couple of weeks.
Every now and then the question “II rvo
we u Bourbon among us?” receives a fresh im
petus. Tho last is from tho N. 0. Bulletin ns
follows:—We learn from a gentleman, who is
himself conversant w ith the facts, tl.at impor
tant testimony has been discovered in this city
respecting the mysterious case of the Rev.
Elcazer, Williams, whii h, in the opinion of a
friend, in whose judgment we have much eon
fidence, will go far to confirm flic belief that ho
is indeed the Dauphin of France.
It is derived from a person who was inclose ‘
intimacy with the Bourbon family in ti e’ :iilm
part of this century, and entirely siistan s the
arguments presented in Putnam's Magazine.— ;
The great value of this testimony consis s iu its
perfect isolation from all other testimony, and I
in the proved fact that the party from whom it !
is derived has given the same account for at
least twelve years past.
Wo have been LUmight a little too free
and a little too fast, in expressing our -mall
faith in the Ericsson Engine. Come of the
other papers arc joining ns in our opinion. The
Philadelphia Ledger says:—Capt. Ericsson in
tends, in July next, to take his ship to England.
The experiment of hot-air engines for ocean
ships havo proved a dead failure. The only
economy obtained appears to be an economy .f
speed, and this can be effected in any steamer,
if a saving of a few tons of o>al is more il.--.ir
able than a quick passage.
