A Paris letter says that :t new work by Lam artine, a “History of the Age of the Medicis,” is announced. A finer theme for the brilliant, poetical historian, than that magnificent epoch can hardly be found elsewhere in the range of history; The work will bo published in the fouilletou of the J J ays. Newspaper Wanted. It. S. Smith, of Fayette Court-House, Ala, , writes to the Memphis Kagle that the citizens of that place are desirous of having a newspa- . per published in their midst, there being none | nearer than forty miles. Should ono be estab- | lished there, Mr. Smith says it would do all j the advertising, Ac., for three counties. For further information, address the postmaster. Fayette Court House, Ala. Genoa and New York Steamship Line. The projected line ofstoatners between Genoa and .New York, Ins been secured by a contract between the Trans-Atlantic Company and the Royal Government, which has been duly signed at Turin. The company, which is chartered for twenty years, w ith a capital of two millions of dollars, is bound to establish two lines of monthly steamers, viz: ono between Genoa and New York, :nd another between Montevideo and Genoa; and the Government guarantees to each line a sum equal at least to §OOOO per voy age for carrying the mails, and accords to the Company certain other important privileges and resources. The vessels are to stop at Ma deira and other intermediate points, and are to be of at least 1500 tons and 250 horse power. The government required the subscription of a sufficient amount of the capital to secure the enterprise, before tho con tract was signed. Some large English houses have taken stock to the amount of SOOO,OOO. ♦- ♦ Strange Affair. A Horrible Calamity has just occurred in Haris. A gentleman, feeling a slight itching in his ear, took up a friction match in order to dis pel it. In the ardor of conversation lie was sustaining he introduced the sulphurous end; the contact soon produced ignition, and the downy lining of the ear caught fire; a portion of tho sulphur adhered to the flesh, and burnt there persistently. The unfortunate man never spoke again. His sufferings were so agonizing that his tongue became powerless; nud after two days’ torment, and unavailing efforts of the surgeons, he died. Dutch Beauties. The late Rev. Henry Coleman, who was a great admirer of female beauty, in his “European life and manners,” gives tho following accouut of the Hutch women. I think somo of them the fairest and hand somest creatures I ever looked upon, and made of tho finest porcelain clay. Before I left Eng land I thought tho English women the finest 1 Wad ever seen—l now consider them as belong ing to the dark races. The Dutch women much exceed them. Take the fairest rose that was ever plucked wyth tho glistening dewdrops hanging among its petals, take the fairest poach that ever hung upon the tree, with its charming, blending tints of red and white—and they are eclipsed by the transparency and beauty of com plexion of!thefairest of tho'Dutch women,as I saw at Broetk and Saadram. The Munich Hatters* The Ilatters of Munich are in difficulty with the police. It seems that every kind of head dress that they invent is interdicted, as sug gestive of demagogy nud disorder. A groat many tiles have been seized lately, and nobody kwows what, he may wenr and what he must eschew. The hatters havo ad dressed a petition to the municipal council, to know what shapes arc admissible and what are not. The municipal council replied, on the Bth of last month, th t they really could not tell. The Paris Charivari advises tho citizens to ap pear in the streets in their nightcaps; tho most peacablo coiffure known. The style entitled Calabrian is forbidden, ns seditious; the bulging crown is contraband, because it looks like a howitzer or small mortar; taps and vizors are punished with a line, because they aro worn throughout Germany by the students, and all students arc demagogues; pointed hats wero once a rallying signal: broad-brimmed hats were worn by Bolivar, whe was a revolutionist; brown hats, with long fuzz, were and still are the fa vorite covering of l*. J. Proudhon. Evidently there is nothing left but the nightcap. Tho Crystal I’alaoe Tower. This tower, which is now in progress of erec tion, stands on Forty-third street, New Y'ork, in the vicinity of tho Crystal Palace. The E’jrpress gives the following desciption of it: “The toweris an octagon, 75 feet in diameter nt the base, with an extreme height of 350 feet. It is of timber, well braced with iron, and is nnchored at each of tho right angles with about forty tons of stone and timber. The first story will be a refreshment saloon ; the second pro bably a ladies’ ordinary ieo cream saloon, or something of that sort. These stories aro in closed, and aro togethor about 25 foetin height. Above this are three stories of open work, and then an inclosed landing to be fitted up iu good style. Here will bo the first look-out, 125 feet from tho ground. Then comes four open stories, abovo which is the second landing, 225 feet from terra Jinna. Passing three open stories, we reach tho highest landing, 300 feet from tho huso, and by reason of the high ground, about 174 feet higher than the topmost window of St. Paul’s spire. The tower will be finished with a pire and flag start’, in all fifty fcot above the ghest landing, thus making (lie extreme alti do from base to top of polo just 550 leet. Tho Bt, will bo about $250,000. The proprietors nvo ten year’s lease of the grot n 1.” A Solemn Fool. A writer in the Dublin University Mngazino April, devotes some fourteen pages to prove at these United Statesnre fast “going to the gs.” At first we fancied that his articlo was ended as a solemn quiz, intended to poke n at tho “ old fogies ” in England who pra ted our downfall; but after carefully perus it from the initial letter to tho 44 finis,” we over that it is meant for earnest, and that the author, to say the least, is a most solemn fool. Among the reasons for the coining ruin of the republic, given by this public donkey, aro tho separation of Church and Stato; tho weight of the people iu the government; and all the other things which are regarded hero as most essential to liberty. Becuuse we have abolish ed primogeniture, and prevented thus the growth of an aristocracy fatal to freedom, 44 therefore,” reasons this solemn fool, 44 the Yankees are sinking fast iuto inobocracy.” Because the in fluence of the working men has so large a space , in our legislation—and, after all, in this coun try, who is not a working man ? —“ therefore,” | continues this sapient dunce 44 Lynch law is rapidly becoming the only law in America.”— Because ho chooses to think there is a 44 same ness of character” among our population, therefore ho argues that there is a dead level of mediocrity, which is certain, very soon, to i conduct tho republic, by a sort of political typhus; to inanition and death. In a word, tho United States is considered to stand upon “a shaky foundation.” We von turo to say that the poor hack who penned this phrase—for a poor hack, writing abuse at so much a line, he evidently is—knows nothing of ‘* shaky ” except as applied to a “shaky” hand, the result of too frequent potations. We, there fore, place little faith in the prognostications of this “shaky” writer, and, though ho prophesies that our republic will, at no distant day* bo 1 split up into half a dozen despotisms, if not more, we will venture to take our chance here rather than in Europe, “shaky ” as the founda tion may be.— Philn. Bulletin. in M. Kossuth Guilty or Innocent ! We perceive that some of the journals in this country friendly to this persouage and his polit ical and military designs, aro triumphantly re joicing over what they regard as the evidences of his innocence of the charge brought against hint by tho London police, and published to the world through the columns of the Loudon Times. They assent, firstly, on what they re gard as satisfactory authority, that ho did not occupy the house in which the munitions of war were recently found; and, secondly, that it had been for some six years used as a rocket manu factory by a responsible person engaged in that department of industry, who alone is accounta ble for whatever has been of late discovered. Whether M. Kossuth is guilty or innocent is not to us a question of much importance; but why the journals in his interest are anxious to defend him in this country from such a charge is more than we can understand, sinco his excul pation will only tend to prove that ho has not the temerity to do in England those tilings of which lie was most boastful in this country.— Hero his purchase of cavalry saddles and two dollar muskets, inasmuch us it served to some extent as evidence of the fact that he was not pocketing for good and all, tho whole amount of funds entrusted to him, was far from a thing done in a corner. Yet the same common law which forbids such acts iu England, forbids them here also. The exultant boast of tho com mission of such deeds in this country, made by American newspapers, and the indignant denial of their perpetration in England, made by the same American newspapers, affords but another instance iu point to manifest the little respect that is hore entertained for tho established laws and tho total disregard of some of our citizens for the preservation of the good faith and unsul lied reputation of our country. The privilege of sympathizing is common to the people of both countries; and the sympa thies of a people may bo expressed in either words or money. A few centuries ago it was tho custom with many nations to carry it fur ther, but a safer and a better usage won prevails, and must prevail,or all the wholesome restraints of government soon must perish, and freedom can no longer be protected from the aggressions of tyranny, whan the saeredness of solemn laws and wholesome and time-honored usages is dis regarded and forgotten.— Washington Republic. Railroad Iron The following remarks from the Boston Rail road Times will bo read with attention by all those engaged in the construction of now lines of railway, who have yet to purchase their rails] If it he true, as stated, that it will fully occu py all the rolling mills iu the world, which are engaged in making rails, at least six years to supply the iron for the roads already begun, some ofthoso projected must wait a longtime for iron tj complete their lines, and the diffi culty is not to be overcome by any increase in the price of iron. The sudden and great advance which has re cently taken place in tho price of railway iron, is a circumstance of unusal importance to vari ous interests in this country. In less than a year the price of railway iron in Great Britain —which is the principal scat of its manufacture and its controlling market—has advanced £5 or $25 to £lO or SSO por ton. There is every reason to believe that it will continue to rise, and notstop short at £l2 or £l4 p r ton. fcix years ago iron went up much in tho same way, rising in a very brief period from £5 to£l2 per ton This advance then was produced as it is now by tho projecting and constructing of a great number of railways, with tho essential difference that the mania at this period was confn.'d chiefly to England, whereas now it is diffused over many countries, raging most furi ously in our own, and embracing a much vast er aggregate of projects. Tho railways in pro gress which produced tho great advance in 18- 47, did not exceed three thousand miles in ag gregate length, though a much larger amount was projected, uud afterwards partially aban doned. The investment of capital in these British railways caused tbo most disastrous commercial revulsion experienced in Great Britain. It ruined hundreds of her richest merchants, and produced a long-continued prostration of every industrial interest, from which it required years of patient labor and economy to recover. From tho best information accessible to tho public, it appoars to he quite certain that there are now in progress, and in actual course of conduction, iu Europe and America, at least twenty thousand miles of iron railroad, besides a vast amount of projected railroad not yet begun, which we do not take into account. Os this amount of railroad in progress, 5,000 belongs to Europe and 1 1,000 at least to this country, exclusive of more than 1,000 miles now coustucting in Canada.—We have seen a list made out, of tho railroads now under way in each State, which amount in the aggregate to more than 1.'5,000 milos; and which list lias un derstated rather than overstated tho truth, for in this State alone omits it 00 miles of railroad in actual construction, and has similar omissions as to other States.—However incredible the ag gregate may appear at first sight, it is impossi ble for the most careful scrutiny to make uny deduction from it. Railways require at least one hundred tons of iron for a single track, and of the roads in progress in Europo 1,000 will be made double track road. It follows from this that the railways now in the courso of construction in Europo and America will require for their completion no less than two millions and four hundred thousand tons of iron. To make this quantity will occupy all tho rolling mills in the world which aro engag ed in the manufacture of railway iron at least six years—thoso of Great Britain furnishing three-fourths, and tho United States. France and Belgium tho remaining fourth. The best authorities do not ostiraato tho largest quantity of railway iron in any one year even as high as 400,000 tons, yet at this rnte it will take six years to furnish iron for the roads already be gun. Tho necessary consequence of this state of things is, that tho prico of railroad iron will not only be kept up, but further advanced, ami bo maintained ftt very high prices for a long lime This will make the manufacture of railroad iron the best manufacturing business that can be undertaken in this country for some years, for it is affirmed, on tho best authority, th.it the | article which is now selliug at S7O. with every prospect of advancing at least to SBO per ton, pays a fair profit to the maker at §SO per ton. The advance in iron will nearly double the oust of many of the railways at the west and south, for the cost of grading upon some of them was less per mile than the cost of iron, it even before, advanced.—The profit to a few ul the companies which have secured their iron at low rates will be very large. Tho English railroad companies are now compelled to pay SlO per ton more lor their iron at home than the price at which our railroad companies wero enabled to obtain it about a year ago, freight aild duties included. —N }\ Journal of Coni merce. — .-j ‘vvrrag RECEIV£DTEK LATE ARRIVALS—A full supply of Du.“Hold's StaggA Shay’s Cassard’s. and \ Koloson’s Hums: also, a fresh and full supply of now I recedes, for sale low at ALEXANDER’S prls cor.
