To my ii(l 011 the dentil of her
Son.
Another llowcr of loveliest hue is gone,
Where there's no -otTowto beliorne;
Oone to a milder, sweeter clime,
Where there’s no death, no end to time.
Yes his bright soul has soared on high,
To join the blest spirits of the sky;
No more to leave that blest abode,
But dwell forever with his (led.
Methinks 1 seethe angel now.
Hovering round his friends below,
And bearing messages of love
From his eternal homo above.
Methinks I hear his warning voiee,
Saying t. each, make tied thy choice;
No more let earth thy miml engross—
Deny thyself, take up thy cross.
Hark ! I hear him strike the lyre,
•loinodhy all the Angelic choir;
llighet and higher their songs they raise,
And sing their Great Redeemer's praise;
Farewell to eartli and all its cares,
Its sorrows, and its bitter tears;
1 want no imro—my race is run,
And my eternal life begun.
Savannah, May title 1853. K. S.
Telegraph from Loudon to Calcutta
uml Canton.
A letter dated Genoa, April the sth, to the !
Newark Advertiser, gives the following account j
of a grand telegraphic enterprise which is to
unite the extreme limits of two continents,
Asia and Europe.
Among the fruits of the present truce in Eu
rope, may bo signalised the projected line of :
telegraph from Loudon to Calcutta and Canton. ;
The great work is already commenced, and the 1
line has been actually made from London to j
this city. The government of this country has
entered into a contract with Mr. .John Brett,
who represents a large company of British cap
italists—the same which carried the line across j
the British Channel-—tor carrying it from Spe
zia to the island of Sardinia, in the midst of ;
the Mediterranean: mid Franco will see that it
is continued to Algiers on the coast of Africa. —
The interest that England has in its eontin
nance to her rich possessions in the East is ob
vious enough.
The company lias engaged to have the !
lino from Spc/.zia to the tho Island com
pleted within eighteen months at its own risk
and expense, and tho government gives it amo j
nopoly for fifty years, when it will become the j
property of the State. The cost is estimated at 1
SOOO,OOO. It is provided among the details of ;
tho contract, that the government shall have j
the free use of tho line for its despatches and a
certain small interest in the income of the
busiucss, for which it guarantees t< the cotnpa- |
ny an interest of five per cent, on the capital,or ;
cost of tho work. The price of all I -p itehe
is fixed at fifty cents for twenty w uds.
Tho whole line from Fpezia, the nearest
point of the main land, to tiio termination on
tho island, (port of Cagliari) will be 111 miles, i
of which 88 will be under water, and 351 over
land, (including the intermediate French Island
of Corsica, thus—
From spezia to Corsica 76 miles, j
Across Corsica 126 “
Across tho Straits of Bonifacio 7 “
Across Lland of Sardinia 203 “
Total 111“
Thus within eighton months we are to have
a Telegraphic line from Loudon to the very bo
sum of the Mediterranean. France, it is under
stool, will bear her share in the work on tho Is
land of Corsica.
The distance between Constantinople, Algiers
Egypt, the islands of the Sea, distant India and
Cliiua and tho seats of European civilization
and commerce, for all purposes of correspon
dence, will thus be greatly diminished, which
will be a great achicvmont, even if the projec
ted work should go no further. But it will not
stop there, unless the course of things is unfor
tunately changed by war.
Sn id Home.
Homes have gone out of fashion, the Sunday
Times thinks. “The mother, in t/nnul toilette,
deserts the crib and the cozy sofa in the corner, •
for the drawing-room in the hotel or boarding
house: tin* daughters follow (and frequently
exceed) the example of their mother ; the son -
resort to the billiard-room, the bowling-alley,
the coffee-house, or the theatre, while tho dis- j
contented papa, exiled from home, seeks com- !
pensation for tho cares of business and the dis- |
appointments of his home—where, wo will not
even venture to guess. Such habits of life in
evitably beget carelessness, extravagance.prof
ligacy—sometimes even crime. This pernicious
hotel and boarding-house life is the curso of
tho woathy and idle classes. It promotes ex
travagance, gossip, gadding, immorality, and
general depravity of tho wholo moral nature.
A community thus, as it wore, deprived of the
grand central attraction nnd regulator of home,
must tend towards all sorts of evils and disas
ters.” Our neighbor overstates the ease. It
is not tho “entire community ” that have de
serted their homes, but an inconsiderable frac
tion of tho same. There are still a few homes
of the old sort left.— N. V. Paper.
