Elevation of tlie Laborer.
By the elevation of the laborer we do not
understand that lie is to be raised above the
neodoflabor. Wo r do no expect a series of
improvements by which he is to bo releasod
from his daily work. Still more, wo have no
desiro to dismiss him from his work shop or
farm, to take the spade or axe from his hand,
and to make his life a long holiday.
Wo havo faith in labor, and in the goodness
of God in placing us in a world whore labor
alono can keep us alive. We would not change
if wo could, our subjection to physical laws, our
exposure to hunger and cold, and the necessity
of constant conflict with the material world.—
We would not so temper tho elements that they
should infuse into us only grateful sensations,
that they should make vegetation so exuber
ant as to anticipate every want, and the miner
als so ductile as to offer no resistance to our
strength or skill. Such a world would make
humanity contemptible.
Manual labor is a school in which men are
placed to got energy of purpose and character, a
vastly more important endowment thau all the
learning of tho academies. Physical suffering
ami want, the power of fearful elements, and
tho vicissitudes of all human things, are, indeed,
hard masters, but those stern teachers do a
work which no compassionate, indulgent friend
could do for us: and truo wisdom will bless Pro
vidence for their sharp ministry.
Tho material world doos much for the mind
by its beauty and order, but it docs moro by its
obstinate resistance which nothing but patient
toil can overcome; by its perils, which demand
continual vigilance: and by its tendency to de
cay. We believe that difficulties aro more im
portant to the human uiind thau what wo call
assistances. Work, we all must, if wo mean to
bring out and perfect our nature: even if we do
not work with tho hands, we must undergo
equivalent toil otherwise. No business or stu
dy, which docs not present obstacles tasking to
the full intellect and will, is worthy of a man.
In science, he who does not grapple with
hard questions, who does not concentrate his
whole intellect in vigorous attention, who does
not aim to penetrate what at first repels him,
will never attain to mental force. Tho uses of
toil reach beyond the present world. The ca
pacity of sturdy, earnest labor, is we apprehend
one of our greatest preparations for another
state of being. When we see the vast amount
of toil required of man, wo feel that it must
have important connections with his future ex
istence, and that ho who has mot this discipline
manfully has laid an eventual foundation for
happiness in tho world to come.
Labor is not merely the grand instrument by
which the earth is overspread with fruitfulness
and beauty, the ocean subdued, and matter
wrought into innumerable forms for comfort
and ornament; it has a far higher function,
which is to give force to tho will,t efficiency,
courage, capacity of endurance and of persever
ing devotion to far reaching plans. Alas! for
the man who has not learned to work ! he is a
poor creature. Ho does not know hmiself. He
depends on others, with no capacity of making
returns for tho support they give, and lot him
not fancy that ho has a monopoly of enjoyment
Even rest owes its delieiousness to toil; and no
toil is so burdensome as tho rest of him who has
nothing to task and quickoa his powers.

The Advertising Budiuess.
In looking over our Jistjof “Exchanges” (which
is probably tho longest in tho couutrj-, having 1
been constantly increasing for a quarter of a 1
century, in spite of our efforts to crop it down) i
we have boon struck with tho large amount of |
New York advertisements contained in the col- i
uuiDs of country newspapers. We notice that !
most of these columns aro headed thus:— “Fkom j
>7. H. McDonald’s Advertising House, 102 j
Nassau-stuekt, New York.” We also find in !
these columns tho business cards of our most ‘
enterprising and successful mercantile houses.
From which facts xve infer two things, viz: that
onr neighbor McDonald is doing an immense ad
vertising business, and that our shrewdest and
most prosperous business men know tho value
of extensive advertising. It is, in fact, tho only i
secret of success. True, other things aro ne- j
cessary. Tho merchant must have tho right j
sort of goods ; ho must sell at fair prices, and I
do business on high and honorable principles,
to succeed in tho long run. Hut advertising is
tho sine qua non of success. So much for what
concerns newspapers and merchants. A word
for McDonald.
We find in tho Springfield Republican of A
pril 30th, an article reflecting somewhat severe
ly upon the New York Tribune, for its endeav
ors to push tho claims of a rival Advertising
Agent in this city, nt tho expenso or injury of
Mr. McDonald. We noticed this unfair attempt
at the time, and expressed our surprise that tho
Tribune should insist that one of its own ten
ants and agents should havo tho preference in
this advertising over other good men. Injus
tice to Mr. McDonald and others in tho same
line of business, wc think the true state of tho
case should be understood by tho public. Free
trade, a fair field, and no favor, is the honest
motto for all kinds of business.
We understand that Mr. McDonald is adver
tising in nearly six hundred different newspa
pers, to which 110 will probably pay an aggro
gate sum this year of over One lluudred Thou
sand Dollars!
Ulusical Coffee House.
A Paris correspondent writes of the French
musical coffee houses, as follows :
Tho musical coffee-houses throughout France,
are heroafter to be subjected to a very rigid sur
veillance. A decree has been issued to this ef
fect. They are already forbidden to give any
songs or “scenas’’ in costume, as this is tho
specialise of the theaters, and their privileges
must not be interfered with. The present cir
cular enters into full details upon the perils
caused to case-concerts. The Prefects must not
allow any improper songs. They must suppress
or suspend any instrument that makes a noise
calculated to disturb or offend the public. (This
must mean the trombone, though I never ex
pected to seo the trombone made the subject of
a State paper.) The Commissary of Police
must be furnished with a programme twenr.y
four hours in advance, which he will examine
and v{tier, if he thinks it harmless. This order
of performance must in no ease bo departed
from. If one of the singers is sick and cannot
execute the duty assigned to him in tho bill, it
is against the law for another artist to supply
his placo. The country would’ of course, be
endangered by the substitution of “Li.dy of my
Soul,” for •‘Maiden of my heart,” in bed with
the grippe. The prices of every article of con
sumption will bo posted in a a conspicuous
placo. Ido not know what tho case concerts
arc in the Provinces, but, in Summer, they are
quite an attractive feature in Paris, spite of the
inferiority of the ice-creams on tho tables, and
the still higher screams from tho orchestra.
The Chararai had a good picture last year of
tho Champs Elysees establishment: underneath,
tho following question was proposed : “Is it the
beer which makes pooplo swallow tho music, or
is it tho music which makes them swallow the
beer?” This question has never been satisfac
torily answered. The two go down together,
and probably mutually help each other—melody
j (red meraschino, bassdrums and brandy, seini
! quavers, shubel-shakes and sarsaparilla, punch
and pathos, toddy and trills, cigars and cres
! cendoes—all go down in company, two by two.

Silver’s Mineral Paints, differ essentially from all otb,
ers in market. They are not Cloys, they requirea lit

| White Lead. They lay on a very heavy body, set light
; away and become an indestruetahlc covering of flint
They neither crack nor peel, and require no stronger
dryer than white lead.
| I have ;i variety of colors Red. Yellow.various Browns
and Jet Black. They are superior in body (or cover-
J ing property) to any tiling over discovered, and pound
for pound will cover double the surface of white lead
or Zinc Mineral Paints and require less oil.
