(Written for a Friend.) BV JOHN ANCRO3U-L The burial grouud is dim and low, Hiding itsclf’miJ a belt of trees; An-1 the winds in dirges come and go, L'ko the sobbing sound of distant seas, On the dark and purple brake, Threading the dusk and tangled brake, Wailing around my mother’s grave. ’T was years ago, they lai 1 her there, A down in the sad and silent shade, All the clods were thrown on her cheek so fair An 1 the cold earth on her bosom laid. Silent and pale in licr shroud slie lay, They covered her with the dark red clay, Sodden und cold was my mother’s grave. I stood and shivered beside the mound, The wind came damp and wet with ruin, And the chill moist earth wore all around Tho ghastly steps of the funeral train; For they were ghastly and grim to mo And their fans all were sick to see— Alone I wept o’er my mother’s grave. And the night camoon with gust and clou 1, An 1 the turf was wot with sickly dew; Anil saw the gleam of the gh stly shrou 1, Ani the ivy clods, and the vapours blue. Above nnd so young; 1 wept that night For my sad. sad heart had an early blight, Fly the friendless gloom of a mother's grave. Years have passed and the grass waves high. And the forest-shadows drape the ground, Tho way i3 choked with woods that lie, ’.Midst ribs of mould around that mound. I knelt and wept, as long ago, Whilst ‘neat h the clods they laid her low, I wept—a wild but sacred woe Above my saintly mother's grave. ami 1853. Tho above is tho title of an article in the Pa ris Preuse which has created much talk in France, ‘ and will probably lead to the suspension of this ! hold censor of Bonapartism. The article is a scathing condemnation of Bonapartism, anci ent and modern, and was evidently penned in that fearless spirit, which derives its bravery from full consciousness of the consequences. Had its author supposed the could Preysc sur- : vive, after so severe a stricture upon the reign ing powers, he would certainly have written in a milder mood. We make some extracts below, i “ If to write history, it were sufficient to ere- ! ate imaginary characters instead of describing ! men, to give to tho hero intended to bo exalted gigantic proportions, in order to obtain dramatic ‘ effects, to cloak error and folly under vain sono rous language, then have wo plenty of his tori sol’ the empire, to which nothing can be added. But, if the rights and interests of tho people be the only just moasuro by which the merits of a Gov ernment can be appreciated, if it be contrary to equity to conceal the deficiencies of a sovereign by exaggerating liis capacity, and to cover his admitted faults by continual appeals to his bril liant actions, then there are hut few histories of j the ompire, and, above all, there are but few good ones. Nevertheless, if we were to abridge 1 the monotonous descriptions of battles,in which j the mind loses itself in the confusion, and to condense tho bulletins, proclamations, and offi cial reports, nothing would bo more simple, shorter, or moro easy to recount than this his tory, and it is much to ho desired that some writer of talent and impartiality would under take it.” The article then describes the treachery, per jury r dissimulation, and violence by which the Napoleon, professing always to act in the name of tho people, succeeded in raising himself to the empire. But in all these details, although tho Prcftse thinks the history of Napoleon I. should be re-written, there is nothing not perfectly fa miliar to the ordinary reader. One fact as com ing from a French pen is worth a passing no tice. The rupturo of the pcaco of Amiens is at tributed entirely to the necessities of Napole on’s insatiable ambition, audit is admitted that England could not do otherwise than insist up on the possession of Malta. But tho striking parts of the article are those which, while af fecting to describe, and for that matter describ ing accurately, certain epochs of tho rule of the first Napoleon, paint in uninistakablo colors, scenes now passing before our eyes. Here is a contemptuous reforenco to tho Court of the Tu ileries as now constituted. “By tho oath that ho drew up himsolf and j took in 1709, he swore to oppose every attempt | to re-establish the fcudalsystem, orto reproduce tho titles and qualities appertaining to it. Ho was scarcely named Emperor before ho aped all tho fashions of tho old Court, and created dukes, counts, barons, chevaliers, numoniers, chamber- ■ lains, marshals of tho palace, ecuyers, masters j of tho coremonies and pages.” 9 iThe worthlessness of official enthusiasm, ami j the hollowness of the present tranquility, are depicted in the following paragraph: “On the day when ho caused himself to bo named Consul for life, Napoleon entered on a path necessarily leading to an abyss, [t istruo there were then, as there always will be, men stupidly servile, or led away by tho contagion of fashion, who launched forth invectives against tho revolution, but before tho end of the Direc tory these dull tirades ceased to command any attention. There were also those far-sighted conservatives who thought everything going on admirably because the newspapers wore muzzled and tho republicans were proscribed—because they could dino and digest in tranquility, go to tho theatro, ihe Bourse, and the Palais*Royal, without hearing any other noise than that made by streot criers, hawking in evory possiblo form praises of the government. These hard-headed men did not know that ambition and despotism were more turbulent than democracy, and that all this scaffolding of peace, stability and securi ty would come down with the first cannon-shot fired on the frontiers. They very soon found it out.” What follows is still more pointed : “In spite of all that was said to the contrarj’ by the official reports and government journals of tho time, the proclamation of the Empire w: s o ddly received in France, ospeciall}* in Paris; and vv hat conclusively proves that public opinion was unfavorable, is the extreme caro taken by tho Government to repress nil expression of it. Tho Tribunate was abolished, the Corps Legisla te votod evorything without discussion, the Senate watched but for a signal from their mas ter, tho journals which had survived tho Con aulate were delivered over to tho surveillance of j the Police; every work whatsoever was submit ted to a board of consure before being printed, (which, however, was no guarantee against ; seizure of a book and prosecution of its author ‘ and printer after publication,) and6,ooo or 8.000 1 police agents wero employed day and night to pry into the actions and opinions of citizens. When he found himself absolute, nnd felt sure of the future, Napoleon tried to unite all partie muler his authority. Ho easily succeeded in rallying the indifferent, the renegades, tho cour tiers, tho traitors of every party, all, in short, who ten years later aggravated their contompti i bio flattery by their cowardly ingratitude. But as to the sincere Royalists and Republicans, ho gained none of them. The first unceasingly re proached him with having usurped tho position of their King, and the others never forgave him for having destroyed their republic. And thus, it was the remark of intelligent men that the young Empire comprised all the rices jvhich had led to the fall of the monarchy, without any of those principles or prejudices which combine to support old institutions.” The l'rcsso proposes to continue the subject, and to show that Napoleon 1. deeply injured France both in her honor and her interests. Girl Type-Setters. The Boston Olivo Branch, Fanny Fern’s or gan. empioys female compositors exclusively. It gives the following account of its arrange ments : “Our rooms are well carpeted, and the girls do not come in till 9 or 10 o’clock in the morn ing, retiring in good season, seldom making over seven or eight hours a day. Smart com positors cun in that time earn from $6 to $S a week. \V e have also one female clerk out of the three we employ. Added to this one desk lias bceu occupied by a female editor as our as sistant, at a salary of S9OO a year. She has spent seven hours a day in tho office, for five days in the week. We generally have in our office an organ and a piano forte, and we have music at the meal hours, when tho ladies feel like playing.” Young America. In the St. Louis Intelligencer of April 2$ wo find the following storyA young gentleman named Alexander Langley, aged seven years, an excellent illustration of tho rising genera tion of America was found wandering on the levee, yesterday afternoon by a member of the police. On being asked who ho was, he replied with great nonchalance that he lived in Spring field, Illinois, with his sister, and, having a de sire t<* seo St. Louis, left about seven o’clock yesterday morning by the cars— arrived at Al ton, took tho downward packet, and arrived in St. Louis, and was much please.l with the place: ! in fact, if he hadn't, forgotten to bring his boots and stockings, he would have no objections to living here permanently. A gentleman took him to his house and provided for him for the j night, and will send him homo this morning. French and Germans in California. j In the California Staats Zeitung we find fcho i statement made that the number of resident Germans in California by far exceeds that of tiny foreign nation, being at least 30,000, and ins transient, 15.000 ; making in allabout Jo,ooo j Germans in the Stato. This, the publisher tells us, is the only German paper publi.-hed in Cnli lornia or Oregon. The Fcho do I'acitique claims the number of French citizens resident in Cali -1 lornia as not short 0f32,000. Measures have been j adopted, it adds, and are now in oourso of exe- j I cution, which will iu crease this number by five j thousand within the present year. The French ! ! according to the Me ho, form a largo portion of j j the travelling public, and of the commercial i i public of the State. They aro found on the river steamers and on the Pacific steamers; there are amongst them bankers, brokers, buyers of , merchandize of all kinds, sellers of gold, gat:- j denors, farmers, artisans, Ac. New Power Press. j The Milwaukee Wisconsin says that Mr. S. D. Carpenter, late editor of a paper at Madison (Wis.) is in Milwaukee constructing a power | press upon an entirely new plan; he offers SSOO to any one who will show his plan incapable of I completion, and‘has been* offered $5,000 for ’ his invention ns it now stands, although about half completed. The press, feeds itself, will work ! both sides of the paper beforo it is discharged, j and turn off twice the number of improssions per ! hour that Hoe's cylinders do. It will also be pro -1 vided with a “Register,” exhibiting the exact J number of sheets worked. The Wisconsin says it has not seen the press in operation, but has such confidence in the in vention as induces it defer to the purchase of a press, until it witnesses the result of this exper iment. thus happily hits off the utilita rian, money-loving nobility. It is not less satir ical than true : These are not Hio romantic times.
