counterfeit bills, owned ly Mr.

were stolen on Saturday night last, ami the pub
lic arc cautioned against receiving them. Fight
notes were stolen, (two of which were good) but
only three of them can ho remembered well
enough to bo described. These are, a S2O bil*
on Gunk of Georgetown, torn in the middle; a
$3 bill on Bank of Capo Fear, the engraviug of
which is pale and indistinct; and a torn S2O
bill cn the Bunk of Tenucsseo.

-©-Tho Wilkes Railroad, connecting Wash
ington, with the Georgia Road, is expected to
lo finished in August next. Tho Gazette states
that six miles of tho road aro already completed.
Ann Willin us, an Indian woman
about 80 years old, and the reputed mother of
Rev. EleazerWilliams, tho alleged Bourbon
or Dauphin, has made affidavit to tho off :t that
Mr. Williams is her own son, A•. Ac, h r evi
d*nco going to defeat the claims of that gen
tic man to Royal birth; but a question ”,i(l na
turally aris< as to the amount of credit to bo
given to her testimony. It is not support’ lby
any collaterals whatever, ami unless that were
tho case, must be receive 1 with duo allowance.
Tho affidavit is brought before tho public by
a writer in tho Court ier den L’tats Cm\-, who
also affirms that ho has letters from nearly all
the collateral witnesses cited by tho supporters
of Mr. Williams’ claims, denying nil knowledge
of the facts and circumstances given upon their
authority.
fpeQ" Another new book in reply to Fnelo
Tom's Cabin is being written by a Philadelphia
authoress. It will be a drug in tho market. Os
all tho dead failures that havo come under our
notice, the attempts to wheedle tho people of
the South out of their money by ditn‘ntcrcnt<.d
replies to Uncle Torn, have been the most signal.
Wo don’t wish any Southern reply to that con
coction. Replies from the South aro virtual con
cessions that tho book is true, or at least they
are indications that wo wince under its attacks.
While we wish not for a moment to arrogate to
ourself the right of dictation, wo do wi.-h that
tho Southern press, Southern authors, aud
Southern authorcasei would coniine themselves
to occasional expressions of contempt tor tho
monstrous fiction of Mrs. Stowe and not waste
anything upon it of more value, than a bit <>f
sarcasm now and then, when it conies in the
way. To treat Uncle Tom seriously, is to pay
him a compliment; whereas a contemptuous
kick when convenient, is all that he deserves.
Avery general feeling of bitter animos
ity, having the late Norwalk disaster for its ba
sis, is sought to be oxcited by tho public press,
against Railroad employees of all sorts—
conductors, engineers, firemen sw tch-tonders,
brakoincn etc. etc. If wo are to believe one
tenth of what is writton, they are almost with
out exception, a set of drunken vagabond*, reck
less, daro-devilish, and irresponsible. This is all
wrong. Few men lead more toilsome and self
sacrificing lives than they, and the extont of
public obligation to them is not to bo estima
ted. Moroover, drunken and reckless employ
ees are exceptions to tho rule. How manifest
then is that injustice which denounces the whole
cla*s at one swoop, for tho sins of the few.
“We aro pleased to learn from good
authority that Air. Thackeray’s visit to tho
Southern States impressed him with a very dif
ferent opinion of our institutions from that ox
pressed by that prince of snob*, Charles Dick
ens.—liiekmond ( Va.) Mail.
I>ocs it not savor a little of tnobbinm to be so
very particular as to what these foreigners think
of our institutions? Pray what difference does it
make what they think or say ; or why should
wo felicitate oursqlves on having impressed
them favorably? As to Dickens, much of what
he said was no worse than the toadies who in
spired it, deserved.
The China n Enilurr.
Mr. Marshall, sent by our Government on
a commercial mission to China, has failed
through tho discourtesy, it is charged, of Com.
Aulick, of tho China Squadron, who took Capt.
Walker severely to task for taking the Minis
ter to Canton in the Saratoga. Capt. Walker
was tried by court martial and acquitted, and
Com. Aulick, it is said, is coming home. When
the Chinese Commissioner (Sms) found that Mr.
Marshall was not sustained, ho broke < Y ini
tiation. Mr. Marshall is at Canton, waiting for
a private conveyance to leave, not being able
to get tho Government vessel.
Strain on the Amazon.
Late Rio de Janeiro paper* mention that the
steamer Murajo has made a quick pa.-vagu up
and down the Amazon, although with one bro
ken piston ; nod it is thought that she may
hereafter reduce the time between i'ara and
the bar of the It io Negro, to five or six days up,
and three or four down the stream. Boats with
sails and oars are variously between thirty and
forty days coming down, aud two and three
months in going up. The strumor m ve l
against the current at about **•] miles por hour,
and with it at eight.
JpfT” Ad ingenious Yankee has constructed
id India rubber stove. If is n great itnprov
meat upon cast iron, inasmuch a if some
sticks of wood aro too long, they can be crowd
ed in, the material being sufficiently elastic for
the purpose. The India rubbe r stove, too, is
not liable to be cracked with the heat.
The Norwalk Catastrophe.
The verdict of the coroner’s jury in this case
is a very lengthy and interesting document. In
addition to the extract on our first p ige, the fol
lowing is the “finding” of the jury, in reference
to tho capacity au l etniuoyinent of the engineer
to whose carclossuess the disaster was attribu
ted:—
“Saul Tucker was employed as engineer on
this road about the time it commenced running,
(which was about the be*r’niring of they ear 184D)
jby Mr. Mas or, w ’.. then Superintend ml; in the
i w-nter of 1851 ho wax running a commutation
train betweeu New York an l Bridgeport; some
time in January of that year an accident occur
i red in tho day time at Mamaronock, which
caused some confusion in the trains, there be
ing at that time but a single track; some little
little time after tho accident, tho train upon
which Tucker was employed arrived at Purt
chexter, (which is this side of Mumaroneck,)
where it should have waited until the arrival
of a train from New llnven; the conductor in
sisted that the train should go on to Green which;
Tucker objected; hut tho conductor assured him
that he had sent forward a vorbnl message to
tho conductor of tho other train, and that it
i would be all right. He accordingly went on,
and a collision was the consequence. The com
pany recognized tho conductor as in authority,
and did not consider the engineer to blame.
For six or eight months after the collision, ho
romained in tho service of tho company, but
not as engineer—-not being able to perform tho
duties of that office in oonsequanco of injuries
received at the time of the collision. He thou
I received from tho company a year’s salary, and
went to California, whence he i jturned not long
since. Not quite two mouths ago he was again
employed ns an engineer by Mr. Whistler, the
present Superintendent, not to take charge of
an)’ particular train, but to relievo other engi
neers as occn i might roquire. On the after
noon of tho I .ill inst., be took charge of this
train for the first time, from Now Haven to NoNv
York—consequently this wus his first trip upon
it.
Whether ho had overb fore boon on any oth
er than away train, does not distinctly appear.
Mobile a ltd Girard Hail lload:
The .Mobile Advertiser of the 12th inst., con
t .ins tho full proceedings of the Railron 1 meet
ing, tho result of which has already been au
n >unccd by telegraph. C. C. Lang do:.*, Esq.,
was chairman,and 11. Bar* ;.y Secretary. The
resolutions p .ssed are as follows :
Ist. li’ det I, That the construction of a rail
road connect!;. , iliecity of Mobile wi ll Colum
bus, it Georgia, is a w ork which addresses itself
most t ■ rably to our considoration. It til!.-- uj
the only gap now existing in the long and con
* tinued chain which connects tho remotest North
east with the Southwest. It will bring into
cultivation an immense body of arable lands,
uncultivated for tho want of market facilities,
and thus greatly increaso tho wealth and popu
lation of the Stale. 1 will afford the best base
lino upon which, with short branches of 40 and
and 4 * miles, we may ally ourselves still more
closely with the prosperous towns of Mont
gomery and Selma. It will pour into tho lap of
our own city increased agricultural wealth, eon- ‘
Meeting us with large and prosperous* counties, !
with which at present we have no social or com- i
nr rci.il relations, and greatly tend to the attain
ment of that high prosperity which we shall
M.r.dy reach, if by our courage we prove our
selves worthy of it.
2d. Resolved, That as tho best expression of
our feeling upon this subject, wo urge upon tho
corporate authorities of the city to subscriblo to
said road the sum of one million of dollars. Tho
subscription to be in the shape of bonds, payable
in 25 years, bearing a rate of interest not more
than 7 per cent., the interest on which is to be
provided for by the Railroad Company, until
the road is in running order from Mobile Bay to
a point in Butler county at or near Greenville.
The bouds not to bo sold under par.
Tho condition of this subscription to be, That
it shall recoive the sanction of tho Legislature ; •
That tho City of Mobile shall havo tho location
of this end of tho road, with a of its being
brought into tho city at theJPost favorable
point: That tho money arising®.om the sale of
the bonds bo applied exclusively to construc
tion of the road between this and Greenville.
3d. Resolved, That this road, whether regard
ho had to the population or taxable wealth of
the counties most immediately connected with
it, deserves the most liberal encouragement
from the State, and wo appeal with confidence
from tho Legislature of 1851 to the Legislature
! of 1853.
4th. Resolved, That the rapid enhancement
in the value of the public lands along tho lino
of the road, and tho important mail and mili
tury service it is calculated to perform, gives it
a just claim for a donation of lands from Cou
gre.-s, such as other great works have justly re
ceived.
sth. Resolved, That for the purpose of carry
ing these matters into effect, and of ascertain
ing by a survey of the Bay the best crossing
point, tho Mayor ho requested to nppoint a
committee of live citizens, who shall report to
an adjourned meeting the result of their exam
inations.
A New Phase in llie Tehuantepec
<IUCMt lou.
The New York Herald brings a champion in
to tho field claiming priority and precedence
before both tho Garay and Sloo grantees. It
puMi.-hes documents showing that in 1826 or
28, the Mexican Government granted to Com.
David Porter and others, for services rendered
j in the war of independence, the rights embraced
’ in tho subsequent grants, which rights wero du
-1 ly as.-igned by the Commodore to bis son Lieut.
J I>. I). Porter, U. S. N. On this question, tho
Herald remarks.
Mexico was largely indebted to Commodore
Porter, in command of her navy, for the success
of her war of independence against tho Spanish
crown. She was immensely liberal in her
promises of compensation in land and money;
but wo have still to learn that either ho or his
have obtained as yet the first instalment, prin
i cipal or interest. And if it ho that the heirs of
th in. Porter have never compromised, nor a
bandoned, nor forfeited his claim, we see no
reason why it shoul 1 not take the precedence of
Loth the Garay and 8100 contracts. In any
• vent, these papers in reference to Commodore
Porter’s pre-emption rights will magnify tho
apparent necessity for the settlement of ull
these conflicting claims to tho Tehuantepec
route upon some original and comprehensive
basis, which, while it shall secure to us and the
world all the required advantages of this isth
mus portage, will also do justice to all parties
concerned. And such a treaty will be a diffi
cult piece of work.

The London correspondent of tho Mobile Ad
vertiser, in his letter of tho 2 >th ult.suys:
Tho conduct of the West India Mail Steam*
J ship Company has at last o.vcitcd the notice of
i the Government. For months past their ves
sels have been so irregular in their departure
and arrivals as to oc<w*iou tho most serious in
convenience; in short, their advices have fro
. qiiently been s< far behind, as to be anticipated
;by the steamers from New York. Government
announced tho other evening that they were
endeavoring to upset the mail contract between
them and t'ie company. If the attempt is suc
cessful. as it ought to be, tho company will bo
ruined, ns for tho mail service they derive no
less than £ $270,000, or $1,310,000 por annum.

SAVANNAH JOURNAL, MONDAY. MAY 16, 1653
J&£t” The Striking Printers in Baltimore/
have started anew penny paper, of which the
Patriot speaks as follows; —
The first number of anew penny pnpor call
ed the Daily Press, made its appearance in
this city on Monday afternoon. Judging from
the tone of its editorials, it nppenrs to bo not
only an exponent of tho workingmen’s inter
ests, but a warm opponent of the Argus.
j7SO* General Pierce, it is ‘stated, deems it
advisable to refrain from harshness, ns far ns
possible, in the removal of the remnant of tno
Seminole Indians from Florida. The survey of
tho public lends in that Stato will bn proceeded
with, in order to convince Billy Bowlegs and
his adherent that it is essential for their wel
fare to quietly join their brethren west of the
Mississippi. By surveying and selling the
lands, and allowing the whites to settle upon
and clear them, tho Indians would soon be lit
erally fenced out of the country.
California and Japan.
Among tho novelties of tho day is the forma
tion of a Japan and California Trading Compa
ny in San Francisco. The timo is calculated
when tho American squadron should reach the
coast of Jnpau, an estimate is made of the length
of passage between California and tho Sealed
Empire, and forthwith three of our elipperships
and a bark are put up for Jeddo.
New Invention.
A Mr. Parker, of St. Louis, has iaventod a pa
tent machine Tobacco press, which occupies a
space of four by eight feet. It has a capacity
to press twenty plugs per minute, or two thou
sand pounds por day. Its work is prociso and
regular, and altogether the machine must cre
ate a tborougn revolution in the mode of tobac
co pressing.
