y&T* Our correspondent “Hydrophobia,”
takes some new views of tho waterspouts about
town, which almost persuades us to look upon
them as a blessing: whereas, we have heretofore
viewed them as a nuisance, calling loudly for
abatement.
We aro certainly in favorof sonv change. The
numerous gutters which convoy tho water in
wet weather from tho roofs of porticoes, stables,
and out buildings by un air line upon the heads
of pedestrians, should either have their contents
warded off the walk, or elso put to some practi
cal use, as suggested by our correspondent. Wo
earnestly entreat of our worthy Council to take
this matter in hand, and by a judicious ordi
nance neutralize the “gutter-power” for doing
harm, or elevate it to the dignity of a public
work tho revenues from which shall ho applied
to the city’s use.
JlS' Our city has so lung been deprived of
amusements of all kinds, our readers will doubt
less read with pleasure the announcement in
another column, of a Concert this evening at
Armory Hall. Tho bill of performance contains
several musical gem-, and the instruments are
favorite ones with concert goers. Wo hope to
poo a full house this evening and from repre
sentations made to us, have no doubt hut the
Concert will be eminently worthy of the patron
age of our rmi.-ie loving city.
Stutihllcit of Dancing*
An ingenious French arithmetician has cal
culated that the space which a young Parisian
belle, who is fond of the salutary exercise of
dancing, tracer.-* a in the gay mlanx of Paris,
amounts, in tho course of one dancing season, to
four hundred and thirty four miles and a half!
He has also estimated that a French lady, foud
of performing the functions of a tee-totuni, will
spin round in a tea it: in one night as mnny
times as tho wheels of a steamboat revolve while
running the distance between Dover and Calais!
Anew Settlement l>i*ooveretl.
Capt. Skinner, of the ship Hermann, from
Baltimore to San Francisco, touched at tho
i.-land of .luan Fernandez on the 27tii of March
for water and says he was surprised to find thcro
h settlement of aboutlhreo hun lrod inhabitants,
who wero directed by a governor. Great kind
ness was shown to tho mariners, and tho vessoi
was amply supplied with provisions. Capt.
Skinner stopped at this island two years ago,
and found it unhubitod.
• Speed of the Train.
It is a disputed point how fast the train was
going over the bridge at Norfolk when the lato
disaster occtired—some stilting the number at
fifteen miles unhour, others ut fifty. It is si ad
that the locomotive leaped a distance of sixty
feet and struck the abutment on the other side,
sixteen feet below tho bridge. If this be true,
the speed of tho engine must have been about
forty miles per hour, a* n b -lv fall- sixteen fe *t
in the first second of time. The fact is deter
mined hy the w! Ith of the draw and the dis
tance th. engine fell before striking. It these
distances can l neeurHteJy determined, there
be no difficulty in finding the rate of speed. If
tlie train were going at twenty five miles an
hour, which is the moft probable rate of speed,
the vertical distance which the locomotive fell
before it struck, must bine been fort} fc :.

Steam In Kngland.
“In the United States there is a most lamen
table general ignorance of tho steam-power of
England. This wo judge from tho statistical
facts respecting hor steam navy and mercantile
steam marine. Her steam navy is really terri
fic, being no less than 117 vessels, besides throo
new 80 gun propellers. One half of these only
nro in commission; but then she has 75 steam
vessels ready for war at any moment, the ave
rage tonnage of which is 800 tons: sumo of them
very small, and some very large, but the smal
lest is lit to cross the Atlantic.
“The commercial steam marine of Britain
numbers I,lß4steamships and steamboats. Tho
city of London alone has 833 steam vessel with a
a tonnage of 102,000 tons. The city of Glas
gow has 88 steamships, till fitted for sea with a
tonimgo of 31,000 tons. In Livorpool there aro
00 steam vessels, with an average tonnage of
21.050 tons. Thus in threo parts there is a ton
nage of steam vessels amounting to 157,059t0n5.
If wo allow an average tonnage of 200 tons to
all the mercantile marine there, it will amount
to 236,400 tons. TbeCuuard Company of G las -
| gow has seven Atlantic steamships, with a ton-
I uage of 13,100 tons, and this force is to be in
creased about 6,000 tons. There aro at least
100 steamships of 1,000 tons burden, each of
which, upon an exigency, could be drafted into
tho British navy and in a few days armed and
equipped, not for defence, but for offensive op
erations.
Decree Against tin*- Steamer Atlantic.
By Telegraph we learn that the District
Court “finds the Atlantic wholly to blame,”
nnd gives a decree in favor of llio Ogdensburgh
for $3,000 and costs of suit. This decision, so
perfectly in accordance with strict justice, will
be very gratifying to tho friends of Messrs.
Crawford and Chamberlain, owners ofthepro
peller Ogdensburgh, who were most unreasona
bly censured at the time of tho accident The
testimony in tho case showed Capt. Richardson
and his crew to bo careful and prudent before
the accident and noble arid daring after it.—
