His father was a tallow chandler And lived in Boston city, But he would not be a chandler And so he wrote a ditty. Then he went to learn a trade, And like ine u printer made; To London thou he went, For on knowledge ho was bent; Till he a great man soonjbocame, And I Intend to bu the same. Dollars, and half-dollars have re fcently been coined in San Francisco. Eight steamers valued at a million and a quarter, have been lost within the last eighteen mouths on tho Pacific coast. The Pacific's re putation as a quiet, placid ocean, cannot survive tnany more such disasters. $29” The Gold Discoveries, in Texas are bona-fide, and wo have the most glowing ad tices-from the gold region which seems to be little iuforior to the California diggings in rich ness and crtsO of working. Tho principal re gion is in Lcrtisiano, enclosed by tho Colorado on the east, tho San Saba on the north, and the fiver Slauo on the south. j23gP*Santa Anna has given the world an in timation of his future course, in one of his first acts, following his accession to power, viz : the tnwpling of the Press. The natural Inference is, that he intends to manage affairs after a fash ion which will deserve, but cannot bear, stric tures editorial. What a proud thought is It for un editor, that tho soil on which tyranny dies, is tho only one upon which he can live. Such a reflection makes amends for the many crosses, aud tribulations which lie thick upon paths editorial, and should cheer, strengthen and con sole in tho darkost hours. The Liberty of the Press is the Freedom of a Land ! j£3P*of all the markets in the world the Pari fiourse is tho most fluctuating. Its extreme Sensitiveness and April-dajr fickleness, is happily taken off in tho following extract from a late Paris letter to an exchange. Speaking of the “feeling” which tho Bourse exhibits, it says : 41 You ma}’ soon expect to see the markets unsettled by the news from America, that Marcy is going out of the Cabinet, or to find it unusually buoyant, on the receipt of intelligence that Mr. Smith has been made Postmaster at Bellows Falls. A few days since Louis Napoleon was effected with a cramp in the stomach. The moment, it was known at tho Bourse, “consols declined one percent.” A few minutes after wards, however, a bulletin was issued, stating the attack had yielded to a warm infusion of gin and peppermint, nnd that his Imperial Majesty was considered out of all danger; coriscfls not only “recovered their firmness, ‘ but they went up a half percent, beyond the rates current the (lay previous. M. Louis Napoleon is known to be passion ately fond of speculating. What better field could he desire than this, in which tho market is dull or bouyant jitst as M Louis is “very well to day,” or “seriously indisposod.” 110 plays other parts to advantage, what a stupid if be oannotplay this one! [From the Cotton Planter.) Cotton, Prospect of Prices, Ac. Dr. Cloud— Dear Sir: In your March No. T stated tho views I commenced the season with, | and as especially submitted in my circular of , Ist January, now not materially changed, though at that time (Ist March) tho excess of receipts of Cotton over tho corresponding peri od of tho year before, was formidable; aud suf ficient to shock tho nerves of those who would not consider and investigate the causes of the excess. Tho explanation I gave for it, I still think correct, and am happy to sny that tho en couraging prospect I presented in reference to our great staple, and ad the elements connected ! with it, are being fully and rapidly realised. ‘ On the 3d March, tho date of my last to you, i I stated tho roceipts would fall off rapidly. Our excess then was about 100,000 bales above the corresponding period of last year. To-day j (April 21st,) in about six wepks, there is not , an excess of 9,000 hales as Saturday’s Prices | Current will show. On tho 2d March Mid dlings were worth B£, now they are 10e. At the end of next week, thero will be a decrease : here from the receipts of last year, and per sons who know any thing at ail of the matter, will seo that that decrease will be widened eve ry week for tho remainder of tliejseason. My outside estimate for tho crop then was 3,000,- 000 bales. It will not vary materially from it. Some points will exceed my figures slightly, I now think, while I think others will not come up to them. So far as my humble ability and influence could effect it, I havo endeavored to direct at tention to the fact that the erop has been largelj* over-estimated, and I have wished to give con fidence alike to planters and buyors of cotton. I am gratified at the efforts I think you are making, to culleot light upon this great and important subject, and cannot question it will be productive of advantage. Lot mo venture a word of advice to my plan ting friends and country merchants. Now you havo sold yonr cotton and towards this crop you ! have no further immediate interest, and hence may be disposed to speak carelessly of the re ceipts that are yet to come in, or of your ideas about prices; but you havo a direct, interest in full justice beingdono to the rerottm of the crop onßold, as it will be simple justice to buyers. For example, if the crop does not exceed 3,000,- j 000, to 3,100,000 bales, they will certainly [ | make fine profits on thoir purchases, and they I will return to their work next season in good i spirits, and meet tho prices which -may prevail ; without any malicious feelings toward thorn if ! they are ever so high. And ought wo uot to ! protect and sustain them in every honorable and reasonable mode? Then lotas be cauti | ous to allow no remark to escape us that is not founded on probabilities and facts. T will il lustrate my moaning thus;—Last summer, in New-York, a Mobile cotton buyer received such accounts from those sorts of curldss writers and speakers, as caused him to write to France, and perhaps England, that tho crop was wonder fully promising, and that in no event could it fall below 3,500,000 bales Ac., Ac. In Havre it oroated a panic, aud they sold cotton at tre mendous sacrifices, aadj instead of realizing fine profits, they lost their money. This may account for the smallness of tho business of the French buyefs this season; they have hardly been known in tho market until they had real ized fine profits upon some random purchases they made from time to time by early shipment- - , since when, and that but recently, they have op crated freely. Now, I say no man has been or was justified in soriodsly estimating this crop at 3,500,000 bales. Below you will find a table of tho American j crop from 1839, which I dosiro all tho parties to ; exivmino. They will seo what has been tho I progress of cotton planting, and by this I con sider is proven that any allusion even to r. crop i of 3,500,000 bales has been as absurd as it wus : preposterous. Ido not wish to check the agree able propensity of gentlemen for gossip, but those who do not deal fairly and honestly with this subject, should be appreciated and deal with as traitors to southern interests. By an examination of this table of the production of cotton, it will strike you that In six years out of twelve, tho production fell greatly bolow in each what it was last year—that two largo crop years ! the period only succeed each other in the 1 years 1*847 and 1848, till those of 1851 and 1852. j In 1851 we receivod 3,015,000 bales, and the crop of 1852 will be about the same. To say that this year, or last year, or any year, more real effort is made, or will be made, to make a crop, is incorrect, as planters mako every effort possible every year to make a full crop; glad to see the crop turn out 3,000,000 bales at least again, but with so backward a.stand,we can not only hope, but can not expect it. Every element concurring to promote tho in torestlof the cotton planter, appears to be in suc cessful operation, and, when his interest is pro moted, there is always a general season of pros perity throughout the land. I look for good prices for the next crop; planters may as well raise thoir marks high; as with tho present state of consumption, trade, and universal prosperity, they can get them if they demand them. When those 3,500,000 bales fellows see how ridiculous they have made themselves, and consider how much harm they have done, it is to bo hoped they will not be imprudent enough to trouble any one with their opinions on this subject. Wishingevery success to cotton planters, I am truly yours, GEO. G. HENRY. Table of Crops front 1839 to 1852 in thousands of lades. 1539 2,178,000 1846.7 . .... 1,779.000 1840 1,636,000 1847 2,348,000 1841 1,684,000 1848 2.7*29,000 184*2 2.379,000 1849 2.097.000 1843 2.030,000 1850 2,355.000 1844 2,395,000; 1851 3.015,000 1845 2,101,000| Light. Weights. Tho following paragraph, from a late num ber of tho Dundee Advertiser, is a striking com- I mentary on the honesty of certain dealers on the other side of the Atlantic : “A Scavenger at Boston, England, picked up the other day, from amongst the straw littered about the butchers’ stalls, a wooden pound (?) weight. This reminds us of a somewhat simi- i lar circumstance, which occurred at Hull. In j | the process of weighing coals from one ship to j | anothor, the weights and scales unfortunately | fell overboard, when it was observed, as a re- ! markable phenomenon, that a number of the former were floating on the surface of the wa ter.— Exchange Paper. Wo do not know whether some of the weights used in our public markets are made of the above material or not, but the weight of tho pound avoirdupois, if the beef and mutton which come daily from tho market fairly rep resent it, seems gradually to have been reduced in its acouskmied; number of ounces. Wo are not certain whether this phenomenon is a will g to the seldom fWt3 trfttt* fff Weights and Measures, or to tho high price of fresh meats in general ; perhaps it is a necessary consequence of both. When beef was eight and ton cents per pound, and mutton six, tli 3 frac tion of a penny saved, by cutting off an ounce or two of the weight, was scarcely sufficient in its numerical quantity to tempt tiie dealer to lay so heavy a burthen upon his conscience for so little gain. Now however, boef is boef, and mutton, we are sorry to say, is dear. Sixteen cents a pound, is one cent an ounce, and ono or two ounces loss weight in a pound, is again of six or twelve per cent, respectively. We do not insinuate that butchers tempt their virtue by any such mercenary calculations, but the strongest virtue sometimes has its weaker mo ments ; the host memory will occasionally trip in conning arithmetical tables ; and hence, re tail dealers should be frequently reminded by official visitations, that sixteen ounces, avoir dupois, make a pound. If each purchaser ; would procuro a common steel-yard, which may j j bo bought for about fifty cents, he could realize j i for himself, in every transaction with his butch- • cr. how near the latter cotnes up to this stan dard, and also satisfy himself that ho is not paying one or two cents more per pound fori his meat than tho regular market price, high as ! that already \s.—Philada Lrd-jn-. “YfEW ROOKS, received April - -7 bj 8.
