Our readers wo trust will excuse the
small amount of reading matter which has boon
supplied them recently. Two of our best jour
tieymen are off duty, cue being sick and the
other serving his country in the jury box. Our
efforts to procure substitutes have availed no
tbiug, and wo aro consequently compelled to
throw oursolfupon the generosity of *tho reader,
for a day or two longer.
j?&®**Wo are requested to cull attention to the
to bo held this evouiug in the Lecture
Room ot the Independent Presbyterian Church,
in behalf of African Colonisation, lion. James
M. Wayne will preside over the meeting, and
the Ilev. Mr. Ulri.ky will deliver an Address.
The subject is one which may very properly in
terest an enlightened commonwealth like Geor
gia, and we are pleased to learn that she recog
nizes its claims upon her.
Frointho addro.-s to bedelicored by Mr. Gru

tertainment may bo derived. He is thoroughly
acquainted with his theme in all its hearings,
and is eminently capable of making his addicts
both edifying and agrocable. We bespeak for
him a largo audience and commendable efforts
in behalf of an unfortunate race.

■Quito a largo delegation from Savannah will
attend the Railroad Festival at Columbus, on
Friday next. All who intend going must be at
the Central Railroad Repot by 5 o’clock, A. M.
to-morrow, ns tho train is compelled to leave
punctually ut that hour to make tho trip in the
desirod time. Wo learn that in compliance
with a petition signed by most of the practising
attorneys of the Savannah Rar, and presented
this morning, His Honor Judge lle.nry R. J \< ic
sox will adjourn tho Superior Court this evening,
to Monday morning next. This adjournment
is made to allow our City Rar to he represented
jit the Celebration in Columbus; it gives us
pleasure to record this act of judicial liberality,
and we trust that all members of our bur who
can, will not fail to avil themselves of it.
The Concert Lnt Evening',
Was not so well attended as we had hoped to
see it. many persons stayingaway doubtless, till
tho merits of the performance had been pro
nounced upon. It gives us pleasure to agree in
the unanimous verdict of tho press this morning j
that wc have rarely had a more delightful musi
cal treat in our city than was this. Where all
acquitted themselves so satisfactorily, it would i
perhaps be invidious to single out any one of I
tho talented artists for our encomiums. They
are all cultivated and finished performers, and
we aro sure will come up to the most fastidious j
standard of musical excellence which the critics !
of tho city (and wo havo many) may choose to ■
require. We cordially commend the troupe to
tho patronage of all lovers of fine music.
The next Concert will take place to-morrow
evening- an excellent progrurno is provided,
and one single piece therein, (Sounds from
Home) will richly repay the visitor for his at
tendance. Fail not to go reader—no disappoint
ment awaits you.
jfr#-Thc second passenger car which wont off
tho drawbridgo near Norwalk, has only been
built somo twclvo months, yet, it is said, has
figured in several smashes before this last one.
Tho sccoud trip that it ever made, was irom
•Hartford to New Haven, after carrying tho
Governor and Suite to the former city : as it was
returning, being empty and locked at the time,
it made its escape from tho track, flew down an
embankment and was almost ruined by the fall.
Tho cause of the accident could never be aseer
tained. If we believed in fatalities, wo should
certainly any 111 Luck travelled in that car.
It was announced by telegraph somo \
days since, that tho .State of Nicaragua was
about taking possession of Grey town, and that
tho pooplo of that place had repented of their
attack upon the Transit Company, which at,
tack involved in tho dispute Capt Hollins of
the U. S. Navy. A correspondent of the N. V.
Times writing from Grey town gives tho follow
ing account of rxisting affairs there.
Nicaragua, by assuming the guardianship of
this place, will confer vast benefits on tho ma
jor part of the people. And the C. States and
Kngland will haven responsible Government to
demand redress from, in case any of tho citi
zens of those countries should be wronged. His
Honor, Mayor Martin, will havo to take up his
quarters somewhere else. And when the flock
Joses its mischievous head, wo all may hope for
a better state of things.
G on. Montenegro, Commander in Chief of the
Nicaragua forces, has been sojourning here for
some time. This looks ominous for the Grey
town people the bad ones of course.
The F. S. Ship Cyane, C iptain lini, N. Hol
lins, is likely to remain here some months long
er—the pirates of Greytown having threatened
that tho moment she leave.-, they will tear down
the property on Point Arenas. Seeing that
their day is drawing to a close, such an opinion
is very well founded. Lven if that vessel were
to make a temporary absence of a few days on
ly, on her return sh • would bo sure to behold
the property of the Company in ruins, and the
perpetrators in the woods secure Irom the pun
ishment which such a crime would merit.

Comforting to Traveller*.
Tho Superintendent of motive power, on tho

The ltond Complete—Our Savannah
Friends*
From tho Columbus Enquirer of the 17th lust,
wo take the following notice of the completion
! of tho Road placing our respective ciiies in con- j
1 necliuii with each other.
The whole line of U. li >ud from this city to Fort J
1 Valley, is now finished, and there remains no j
gap between bore and Savannah. Situated as j
we are, nearly three hundred miles apart, the j
j liery steed that puff; and whirls along on the
; iron track, brings us almost within speaking
i distance of our friends on the seaboard, in a ,
1 short timo tho trams will pass from one point I
l to the other, between tho rising and setting of
, the sun. Who would have dreamed of such a j
: thing twenty or even ton years ago? In years
j gone by it was a t.i-k of toil and time to visit
1 tlie commercial emporium of the State. The
Magging steed; tho buggy and the driver, wend- ,
jcd their 1 ■w and hearth*.- s way over the heavy
.-.iml. and interminable pine forests of the up ,
pureutly worthless space. A month’s hard tra j
i vel would scarcely carry the man of business i
or pleasure to Savannah and land him at home
again. How changed from that day to this.
The hour comes, and now is when wo may |
l view the rising sun from the hanks of the Sa- j
vannah river, aud hid adieu to its setting glo- >
, ries from the margin ol’ the beautiful ChuLta- I
hoochoe. Is there a doubt on this subject?— j
Notone.
Rut we have no intention of dealing in tho 1
; extravagances to which the occasion might well j
give ri.-o. The reality is enough; the truth is 1
.'tranger and more impressive, in this cornice- !
t ion, than the fiction w hich could he coined in
the most glowing imagination. It was tho
boast of our enemies, a short time ago, that our j
j beautiful city was isolated from the rest of the ■
surrounding world; that tho Railroads passed on j
; every side increasing the wealth of every other ,
i section, aud leaving us to pine away, and ulti
mately perish in the lethargy of an inactive
policy. What say these prophets ot evil now?
We are already bound to the Atlantic const by ,
I hands of iron, and soon the travel and the com- *
inerce of the Gulf of Mexico will bo scon rush
j ing hitherward along tho great work, now rap
idly progressing, from hero to Mobile. YVe
were tauntingly told to look out for, ami take
caro of ourselves. This advice, given in de
rision, has been acted on in earnest, and the re
sult is this day Hung, in proud defiance, into
the very teeth of our mi. taken and heartless ro- |
i vilers.
Let us conic, however, a little nearer homo. :
Many of our friends from Savannah, who have
watched the progress of our road and are dis
po.-ed to rejoice with our citizens on the occa
sion of celebrating its completion, havo been ‘
invited to visit our city during the present week |
and partake of tho hospitalities of our people.
On Friday next, wo understand, they will be iu
our mid. t, and preparations aro now making
to receive and entertain them os will best befit j
tho pleasing occasion. Few of them havo ever
visited our city before ; and although they limy i
not find so much of the artificial elegancies of
social and conventional lift* ns distinguish other
and olilor cities of the Union, they will ho met
by a hospitality as warm, and greeted with a :
welcome as earnest, as ever gushed from tho ‘
hearts of friends. It will bo to us an occasion
of pride and pleasure. It will call up the motn
-1 ories of the past, when the writer of this stood
! shoulder to shoulder with tho Representatives i
! of our own seaport in their long aud arduous
struggle against tho mistaken and suicidal ef
forts of many of Georgia’s citizens, to divert her
i commerce to tho chief city of a neighboring
I State.
Tho triumph is now well nigh completed.
Savautiah has shaken off the fetters with which
she was for so many long years bound down
nml wrongfully crushed by the policy alluded
ti>. The commerce of the State is turning to,
and flowing into her bosom. Tho energy and
public spirit of her people havo hound every
section of the State to her with hands of iron,
nml her sons will be greeted here and every j
where else, with a warm and heartfelt welcome, i
They deserve it, and they will receive

A Most Miractdons Cure of Hud Legs, after 4.3
Yearn’ Ruffe ring.
Extract of a letter from Mr. YVilliam Gnlpin. of 70
81. M.irys-ftreot. Weymouth, dated 15th May, 1851 j
To Professor Holloway:
Bih:—At the age of eighteen my wife, (who is now
sixty*-onei caught a violent cold, which settled in her
logs, and ever since that time they have been more or
less sore, and greatly inflamed. Her agonies were
destruciing, and for months together she was deprived
entirely of rest and sleep. Every remedy that medi
cal men advised was tried, but without effect; her
health suffered severely,- aud the state of her legs was
terrible. I had often rend your advertisements, and
advised her to try your Pills and Ointment; nnd, a® a
last rcsaurce, after every other remedy had proved
useless, she consented to do so. She commenced six
weeks ago. nnd, strange to relate, is now in good
health. Her fegs are painless, without seam or sear,
and her sleep sound and undisturbed. Could you have
witnessed the suffcrinirs of my wife during the last 43
years, and contrast them with her present enjoyment
of health, you would indeed feel delighted in having
been the means of so great ly alleviating the sufferings
of a fellow creature.

To Professor Holloway;
Sue—l suffered for a porid of thirty years from a
bud leg. tin* result of two or three different accidents
at theGa® Y\ nrka:accompanied by scorbutic symptom®.
I had recourse t a variety of medical advice, without
deriving any benefit, and was even told that the leg
must be amputated; yet. in opposition to that opinion,
your Pills and Ointment have effected a complete rnfe
in so short a tiny*, that few who had not witnessed it
would credit the fact. (Signed)

A Dreadful Rad Rreast Cured in One Month.
Extract of a letter from Mr. Frederick Turner, of

To Professor JlbUaway :
Dear Sin:—-My wife had suffered from Bad Breasts
for more than six months, nnd during the whole peri
od had the best medical attendance, but all to no use.
Having before healed an awful wound in my own leg
by your unrivalled medicine, jl determined again to
use your Pills and Ointment, and therefore gave them
a trial in her case, and fortunate it was I did so*, for in
less than a month a perfect cure was effected, and tho
benefit that various other branches of my family have
derived from their use i? really astonishing. 1 now
strongly recommend them to all my friend®.
