%!■&*■ Preparatory to leaving this morning
for Columbus (which wo did) wo had
off a quantity of editorial, and placed it for safe
koeping in our castor. The sai l castor, or bea
ver, or hat, together with anew cap, in which
we intended to tako a siesta aftfcft dinner to
day, (if so disposed) were last night villainously
and feloniously stolen from the hat-rack in our
place of abode, and we left this morning tor the
K. It. Festival in a borrowed tile. Some editors
would feel inclined to be witty on an occasion
like this, but for our part we can’t see the fun
niness of such proceedings. W o mention tint
occurrence to account to our readers tor the
sparseness of editorial which will be “in the pa
per” to-morrow and next day. If the reader
should regret the loss of the editorial, let him 1
remember that wo mourn u bat gone, a cap fled,
and bo consoled by contrasting his hit with ‘
ours.
As for the rogue, we have only to request j
that he will hum or return the numerous docu
ments which he found in the upper story of our 1
enstor. Wonder if the scamp bought a copy of
this evening’s paper, to see what we’ll say about !
him? If wo were only sure of it, he should not !
get off thus easily.

A correspondent of the N. 0. Picayune j
writing from Mexico gives tho following new
items which must be taken for what they are
worth. Wo cannot of course decide upon their
truthfulness though wo believe strongly in the
goneral inference to which they would lead—
that Santa Anna s reign would be a stormy one,
and is destined to give the United States more
trouble, for which in duo time we shall of course
demand indemnity, peaceably if possible but for
cibly otherwise:—
“Gen. Arista has been ordered to leave the
country forthwith, and i* now on his way to
Vera Cruz, to embark in the British steamer for
Europe, where it is rumored he will be obliged
to reside, or lose his property and his rank in
tho army. It is said Santa Anna fears his resi
dence iu the United States.
The President is rapidly increasing the army
by forced levies, and has introduced a system
of exact and severe discipline. The rumor
among the l eprut is, thut ho is going t<> retake |
California and avenge tho wrongs of Mexico, j
No doubt wo shall see what we shall see.
Humor says Spain will furnish Santa Anna

£•o**The following bill was introduced in the |
Legislature of Indiana, at the last session. It 1
is equal to the negro law of Illiuos :
By Mr. McDonald —a bill to compel old bach
dors of thirty years of age t, marry or pay s.>u
a year into the county treasury, to go for the
benefit of the first lady who shall get married
after tho first of January. The bill also applies
to widowers of twelve months’ standing, /.>.
The idea of levying a tax on bachelors is a
species of “piling on the agony,” against which
all just men should protest. Is not single bless
odness (?) a heavy enough burden of itself. Let
tho old fellows stand, as melancholy warnings
to ull, to marry while they can.

was 24,000 copies, and uo more. JIo also says |
that tho stamp duties do not exhibit the truth of |
the matter, as tho proprietors of newspapers

This work supplies a want which the reading
public have long tell—a description of German

general reader has not a cursory acquaintance—
something more minute is needed. We have J
descriptions in plenty of foreign scenery, and j

Miss. Carlcn, in Sweden, ranks next to Miss

enthusiastically admired, in the versions given
of them by Mary Howitt. The work now before |
us is a chaste aud pleasing production, full of
w .manly traits, and reflecting more credit if
possible upon tho heart, than the head of its
authoress. We predict for Miss C.irlen, a wide |

There are few men about whom tho world

through whose hands the Sacred Scriptures have
come down to us. Their characters, their cn- j

their fitness for the Avork, their manner of work- 1

Siiable, ‘lhc little volume before us contains
biographical sketches of the various andnumer- i

English version of tho Bible, and though but a
small work, has been iu preparation the author
tells us, for twenty years. Despite the many and
arduous difficulties which have attended his re

possible to do. Wo commend tho work to all of

Tho London correspondent of the New York

HERE IS YOUR REMEDY^
II )LLO WAY”S OINTMENT
A Most Miraculous Cure of Hud Ley*, afier 43
Years Sufferin'/.
Extract of a letter from Sir. William Galpin, of 70
’ St. Murya-?treet. Weymouth, dated 15th May, 1851:
To Crofejutor Ilollonnn/:
Sin:—At the age of eighteen my wife, (who is now
{ sixty-one) caught a violent cold, which settled in her
i legs, and ever since that time they have been more or
less sore, and greatly inflamed. Her agonies were
- destrncting. and for months together she was deprived
entirely of rest and sleep. Every remedy that medi
cal men advised whs tried, but without effect; her
health suffered severely, and the state of her legs was
terrible. 1 had often rend your advertisements, and
tulvised her to try your Pills and Ointment: and, as a
last resaurce, after every other remedy had proved
useless, she consented to do so. She commenced six
weeks ago, and, strange to relate, is now in good
health. Her legs are painless, without scam or sear,
and her sleep sound and undisturbed. Could you have
i witnessed the sufferings of my wife during the last 43
years, nnd contrast them with her present enjoyment
us health, you would indeed feel delighted in having
j been the meansof so greatly alleviating the sufferings
1 of a fellow creature.
(Signed) William Galiix.

Ley, of 30 Years Stand in;/.
Copy of ft letter from Mr. Win. Abbs, builder of Gas
Ovens, of Ru-heliffe, near Huddersfield, dated May
i 31st. 1S51;
1 To Professor IldUowa}/:
Sir:—l suffered for a. perid of thirty years from a
bad leg. the result of two or three different accidents
at the Gas Works; accompanied by scorbutic symptoms.
1 had recourse to a variety of medical advice, without
j deriving any benefit, ami was even told that the leg
| must be amputated; yet, in opposition to that opinion,
your Pills and Ointment have effected a complete cure
in so short a time, that few who had not witnessed it
1 would credit tho fact. (Signed)
William Anns.
The truth of this statement can le verified by Mr.
W. P. England, Chemist, 13 Market-street, Uudders

.1 Dreadful Had Itreast Cured in One Month.
Extract of a letter from Mr. Frederick Turner, of
J Peushurst, Kent, dated December 13th. 1850:
i To l*r*fe*sor IloUowa t/ :
! Dear Sir:—My with had suffered from Bad Breasts
! for more than six months, and during the whole peri
's! had the best medical attendance, but all to no use.
Having before healed an awful wound in my own leg
by your unrivalled medicine, H determined again to
use your Pills and Ointment, and therefore gave them
a trial in her case, and fortunate it was I did so! for in
less than a month a perfect cure was effected, ami the
benefit that various other branches of my family have
derived from their use is really astonishing. I now
strongly recommend them to all my friends.
(Signed) Fuedeuick Turner.
