Chinese Guillotine. It appears by a statistical statement, publish ed in tho Friend of China,in December last, that j during three months of last year, four hundred j nnd one celestials were put to death, in Canton. ‘ The beheading is performed with the sword iu a j very dexterous mndner. The executioner forces tlio head of the culprit back wards by tugging at his long tail, and when the neck is thus ex posed, the heavy sharp blade whistles through the air and the head is severed from tho body at a single blow. Sometimes as many as sixty or seventy felons are arranged in a row, and the executioner passes along tho line lopping off head after head as if they were so many cab bages. Mormon Emigration. Tho editor of the St Louis Republican recent- , ly took a trip up the Mississippi river, and gives the following description of a lot of Mormon emigrants who were on board the steamer: On board wore upwards of two hundred Mor mons en route to Salt Lake. They were chiefly Danes, and a more than usually neat and res pectable looking body of passengers. There were also some Welsh, and a few Portuguese, i all for the same destination. Tuey appeared to I bo healthy, and from theainount of the baggage they had with them we suppose they are pos- ) sessed of considerable wealth. Os the number, many were young persons, male and female. Some of the latter wero handsome, though dress od in the gariueuts of a long voyage, and their j destination called to mind tho peculiar system which prevails in the land to which they are going. There aro at present e leainpcd on the ; bill above Keokuk between fifteen hundred an l j two thousand Mormons, preparing to start for | the Salt Lake. They have formed a regular encampment, and tiro making up their outfit;; oomc of them are lodged in tents, and many of \ them in tlie covered wagons in which they ex- | poet to cross the plains. They have selected this point because of the j couvenieiK-o of procuring stock, provisions, JL.c. j From Keokuk they will go by land to Kanes ville, and thence to the City of Promise. Small | detachments aro sent oft’ns fast as they can bo : Equipped ami provided for. Tho whole are Under the supervision and direction of the agents ; Os the Immigration Society. This society brings them out, pays their passage, and provides for them the means to reach Sait Lake, at a given sum per head. The expense is paid, in whole or in part, ns tho o nigra ul cli ses to o a joy or ; deny himself comforts, at a fixed sum per head. They all seemed to he happy ; mil on Sunday 1 •Morning every one capable of reading was de- ! Voutty engaged in studying the religion they profess. They have a long and wearisome journey before them ere they reach tho city of tho Luitcr Day Saints. Power of tile Uuglisii Language. It used to be said that If Athens aul Licc dcOinon could but make up their minds to be ! good friends and make a common cause, they , Would be misters of the world. The wealth, the scieuoe, tho maritime enterprise, and daring ; ambition of the oue, assisted by the population, the territory, the warlike spirit, the stern I institutions of the other, could not fail to carry tho whole world before them. That was a pro ject hostile to the peace and prosperity of man- | kind, and ministering only to national vanity.* A far grander object, of more easy and more honorable acquisition, lies bot'uro England and the United States, and all other countries owning our origin and speaking our language. Let them agree not in an alliance offensive and de fensive, but simply never to go to war with ono anothor. Let them permit one another to de velop as Pprovidonee seeius to suggest, and tho British race will gradually and quietly attain to : a pro-etnineneo beyond the reach of mere policy : and arms. The vast an l ever-increasing in terchange of commodities between several in mi- 1 bers of this great family, the almost daily communication now opened across, not one, but 1 several oceans; tho perpetual discovery of new ! means of locomotion, in which steam itsoif now bids fair to bo supplanted by an equally power ful but cheap and more convenient agency, a'i promise to unite the whole British race through out tho whole world in ono social and commer cial unity, more mutually beneficial than any contrivance of politics. Already, what does Austria gain from Hungary, France from Alge ria, Russia from Siberia, or any absolute mon archy from its abject population, or what from its rural suburbs, that England duos not derive in a much greater degree from the U. States, and tho United States from England? What j commercial partnership, has industrious house hole exhibits so direct an exchange of services? All that is wanted is that wo should recognise this fact, and give it all tlio assistance in our power. Wo cannot bo independent of ono : anothor. The attempt is more than unsocial ; it is suicidal. Could either dispense with the; labor of the other, it would immediately lose tho * reward of its own industry. Whether national jealousy, or tho thirst of warlike enterprise, or tho grosser appetite of mercantile monopoly attempt tho separation, the result and the crime are the same. Wo are made helpmates for another. Heaven has joined all who speak tho British language, aud what heaven has joined let no mau think to put asunder.— -London Times. Colored Signals—‘Singular Facts. Colored signals have for some time been used upon French railroads as a means of acquain ting the engineers of approaching trains with the state of tho track, during the night. Each guardian has three bull’s-eyod lanterns ono white, one green, and one red. While is signifi cative of perfect security ; the green nnd red aro indicative of danger, and the necessity of precaution. Bat it seems that this system will have to bo abandoned. Many people arc inca pable of distinguishing one color from another and accidents have positively happened, by tho engineers soing tho green light through the red, or vico versa, *and taking the supposed and mingled colors for white. Instead of holding up nndlookingout for “track loosenned by rain,” or “rails uphoaved by tho frost,” he would count on perfect security.” and dash on into obstruc tions and devastation. This affection of the oyo is denominated by pbisicians chromatodseudop sii, ; and the Monitcur says it is much more common than is generally supposed. Prevot af firms that oa® person in twenty has ib and Sheukeck ihat fully five in forty are uiiliciod with it. Professor Thompson, of Glasgow, has for several years declared tho employment 2 colored signals on Railroad* to bo utt.Mide 1 ly ino colors most likely to be mistaken the one for tho other. The same journal . .i:ious u ; person ofits acquaintance who was commission ed by a lady to buy her a green silk at Lyons. ] On his return he brought her a red one, think -1 ing that he discharged his duty with extreme \ propriety, It says, too, that this incapacity to distinguish colors is frequent even in persons whose professions would seem to render great delicacy of eye necessary j und quotes four well known painters, three surgeons, two paper-ma kers. two dyers, a shall-washer, a tailor, and a . worker in enamel. Several employer on the Northern Railroad ; have been convicted of it. Gardeners are of- j ten obliged to squeeze an apple or pear to find ; | out whether it is ripe. Its color is no guide. 1 The Muniteur also knows a stationer who otters ; you whito sealing-wax for red, and piles the ease of a manufacturer, of paper-hanings who could not tell rod from pale-green, and who 1 made so many mistakes that he had to go out of ; the business. In consideration of all which facts, tho Directorsof Railroad Coinpauies ure urged to hit upou a surer method of eommuui- • cation between the guards and the conductors. ; John C. Calhoun. We were walking from Clark’s hotel iu Co lumbia to tho Legislative Hall, in December, 1834, whoa we were suddenly grasped by tho arm, and as suddenly wheeled to tho‘‘right about.” Kerr Boyce of Charleston, still hold- j ing us firmly, said, “Let mo introduce you to i i Mr. Calhoun?” Wo feel even now tho thrill that tiugled through our young hluod— Cal | boun! We wore utterly c ’..f umJcd, and ve maiuod, as if rooted to the spot iu speechless , amazement, when Mr. Calhoun advanced, and ; ottered his hand in the most cordial manner. I lie had evidently’ been conversing with Mr. Boyce iu bis usual dashing style, and his face was clothed in smiles. We looked at hitu— j and then it was we saw that eye! the brighest, J the blackest, the most brilliant and the most in tellectual that we ever saw in mortal head. ; Wo have seen all the distinguished monos the ; United States—except General Jackson—but their eyes were nothing when at rest. But : Calhoun’s eyes never were at rest—they ghinc- i nl like lightning, not dazzling you, but literal ly flashing with the flic of genius—in a word, ! he is the only man that we have over encoun tered who bore the indelible mark of genius. The moincntyou looked into his eye and caught their expression you saw tho God—tho spirit that rules the world—and you never dreamed of doubling his superiority to yourself and to all the men of the age. If all the splendid eyes of all the beautiful women of America were gathered together in one bright, blazing, beam ing focus; they would pale before the Greek lire of this trunsccudcnt genius. Its glance was magical— hat of Alexander tho Great could not have been more so—and black us the ra- | ven’s wing—there was a glory in its beams ’ that played like lightning on the edge of tho : storm. llis manners wero irresistible; cordial, kind, 1 warm with the spirit of enthusiasm that nnima- ! ted his soul, you felt his power as if u spark of I electricity had touched your heart. “I am ! very glad to meet with you,” said Calhoun, ob , serving our excessive embarrassment, and evi- . deutly with a feeling us pride as he noticed the j reverential respect us his youthful admirer.’’ ‘•I have to thunk you,’ we rcpiied, “for your | kind notice, and lor your correspondent:. ’’ . “Let us keep it up,” sai l Calhoun, his bright eye glancing—“lotus keep it up; it is never too late to do something in a good canso.” lie then dashed otf in his rapid style, his hand an l ‘ eye assisting by their motion the current of his j extraordinary conversation. We cull it con versation for want of a better term; but it was a brilliant speech, in which political axioms were thrown otf in sentences, and with such ra pidity .and such irrepressible vivacity that it required ail our attention to follow him in his lghtning flight. What a talker! Wo shall give frequent instances o. his conversational ability in the course of these pictures, and there- J fore merely state at present that ho touched— , as he flashed along- on the motives, character and conduct of parties and partisans, the nature ! and form of governments: tho domestic con cerns and foreign relations, their tendency to destroy liberty, and the* method of redressing grievances. These wore the themes which in terested him most. Ho seemed to seize tho truth by intuition; there was apparently no mental struggle, but i lea followed idei as if the machinery of bis mind delighted in perpet ual motion. We see him now in our mind’s eye as he stood on that memorable occasion! His features earnest and intent; his voice full and sonorous; his enunciation rapid; his tongue, taking tho thought as it came from his brain and giving it shape; and his hands, which seem ed to hold the argument that ho was coin bating assisting by tiioir energetic action to impress those ideas and thoughts on your memory for ever, His personal appearances, too, was entirely different from any of the thousand descriptions which have been given of him by the insidious 1 sc rib b l cts Jn nd invidious varlets who have scatter- \ o l their faL-ehoods from Marine to Mexico. In person, he was six feet high, his figure spare; ; his face rather pale, without beard, ■ t..l is he wore, at that time, a white neckcloth without a | collar, you wero induced to believe him older I than he really was. But his spirited style of ! : conversation exhibited anything else but pre matureage, and his hands, which were very ‘ white, added not a little to his fino persona! appearance —indeed his hands wero beautiful as sociates for his glorious eyos.— [Mobile Tri bune.
