Wo are indebted tu Mr. Barnard E. Bek re
ceiver of Tax Returns for abstract* from his
dtjests of tho value of the taxable property in
this city and county. By a comparison of tho
returns of 1852 and 1853. it is shown that tin- .
increased ralue of taxable property over last
year, is $1,424,796 —which is an evidence of I
the prosperity, the city has enjoyed for a length
of time. We should be pleased to insert the
whole articlo, but find it impossible owing to
our limited force.
Concordia Concert Troupe.
Tho Concort of this talented company la.- 1
night was very well attended, and gave univer
sal satisfaction. The songs of Herr Klein, and
the performance of Herr Aiirend, called forth
tho most enthusiastic applause. They give
their last Concert on to-morrow evening, and
we can ussure our music-loving citizens of a
rich treat. Tfieir music is of a character that
can be understood and appreciate! by everyone
who has the smallest purticlo of music in his
soul. The Violin Solo, “Sounds from Home,”
and the “Carnival of Venice,” are in themselves
richly worth the price of a ticket. Wehopo our
citizeus will show their appreciation of this de
serving Troupe by giving thorn a full house to
morrow evening.

that iu Murry county, Georgia, and near its
southern boundary, at the summit of a mural
precipice, 1700 feet in perpendicular height,
there stands tjie remains of an ancient fortifi

the garrison used to obtain their supply.

Month of Calamity.
Truly this has bocn a month of Calamity.
AVithin three or four weeks we have been called
upon to report the destruction of the steamship
Independence in tho Pacific, tho Ocean Wave
on the Lukes, and the Jenny Lind in California;
thVawfil Railroad culatn ties at Ch'cigo and
Norwalk, and now we have to add to the oata
i logue the loss of the ship William and Mary at
| sea. By these six disasters, not less than five
j hundred souls have been hurried into eternity,
and in addition to those there havo been minor
accidents on Railroads nnd steamboats, falling
of buildings, Ac., which would materially swoll
the fearful aggregate. There must be a grow
ing disregard for human life througout the
; world when disasters of this kind come “thus in
battalions.” Tho effect will bo to keep all
’ travellers merely for pleasure at home, until
. they can have some guaranty that they will
’ have a fair chance for life in rail-cars and stcum
j boats.— Philadelphia Eve. Bulletin.

VINDICATION OF THE LIQUOR DEALER.
The Rev. Mr. Campbell, of Tennessee,
who was In'ard with so mucli satisfaction
last winter, will deliver an address in Armory Ilall,
Tomorrow (Friday) evenings at 8 o’clock.
The truly respectful maimer and christian-like spi
rit with which he treats the subject, always gains the
admiration of his hearer*.
Mr. C. is a high-toned total abstinence and “Maine
liquor law” man, but differs materially in regard to the
responsibility of the dealers and vindicates them
against much of tho odium usually charged upon them.
We would most respectfully iuvite dealers and nil
other citlzons, aud especially a full attendance of ladies.
! Come once and you wi 11 want to hear Mr. 0. again,

A Most Miraculous Cure of Bad Leys, after 43
Years Suffering.
Extract of a letter from Sir. William Gulpiu, of 70
St. Marvs-strcet. Weymouth, dated 15th May, 1851:
7b Professor Holloway:
Sir:—At the age of eighteen my wife, (who is now
sixty-one) caught a violent cold, which settled in her
logs’, and over since thu* time they have been more or
hiss sore, and greatly inflamed. Her agonies were
destracting, and for months together she was deprived
entirely of r\-.t and sleep. Every remedy that medi
cal mer ‘vised was tried, hut without effect; her
health suffered severely, and the state of her legs was
; terrible. I bad often read your advertisements, and
advised her to try your Pills and Ointment; and. ns a
last mature, after every other remedy had proved
! useless, she consented to do so. Bhe commenced six
weeks ago. and, strange to relate, is how in good
! health. Her legs arc painless, without seam or scar,
• and her sleep sound and undisturbed. Could you have
witnessed the sufferings of inv wife during the last 43
, years, and contrast them with her present enjoyment
of health, you would indeed feel delighted in having
I been the means of so greatly alleviating the sufferings
of a fellow creaturo.
(Signed) William Calms.

1 had recourse to a variety of medical advice, without
’ deriving any benefit, and was even told that the leg

1 Dear Sir:—My wife had suffered from Bad Breasts

Having before healed an awful wound in iny own leg

a trial in her case, and fortunate it was l did so: for in

benefit that various other branches of my family have
