Railroad Song. Air—Wait for the Wagon. Tho following original song, was sung at the tho Kail Road Festival in Columbus, by Mr. James Piekpont, a brother of tho llev. Mr. Pieupont of this city, and was received with great applause. AVo were unable to give it a place iu our paper of yesterday for want of room. As I for one, am called upon, I’ll sing to you a song, And ns 1 find it rather short, I'll not detain you long. Thro’ Georgia State, we whirled along—we did it iu u day— Aud safe arrived in tlm sweet place, our compliments to pay. Chorus. — Look out for the Engine! Look out for the Engine! I Look out for the Engine, when tho whistle ‘ blows. I’ll sing you then a comic song, made by a Northern \ pate. About a line of railroad that runs thro’ a Southern ytate. From East to IVest tho road extends, bound by it,-; iron bands, And Columbus with Savannah now Ls shaking friend- : ly hands. Chorus —Look out for the Engine, Ac. The old stagecoach, with lumbering wheels, must seek some other route, For entorpriziug railroad men are knocking all about. They’ll build your roads to every town, and if you wish for more They’ll lay their trucks, ere your aware, and take you to your door. Chorus— Thon look out for tho Engine, Ac. At five o’clock on Thursday morn we started on our trip; The bell was rung when all was right, aud then they let her rip. Wc passed the mileposts in a jiff, as o’er the plains we 1 flew— Tho locomotive seemed to say, ‘Tin bound to put him 1 through.” Chorus —Look out for the Engine! Ac. ! We shot across the sandy pluins—wo How aloug the ! ridgo— And waru’t the least bit frightened, tho’ wo rnu off \ every bridge. The iron horse would sometimes stop to tako cn board his feud. And then start off along the track with accelerated ! Sliced. Chorus —Look out for tlie Engine ! Ac. But when we sighted Kook ogee, some mouths j now water;) He did as nary man you see—how do you think ho ortert Champagne in ico, and icc cream too, were nolens ; eolens coming, Which gave us an idea or two,aud sent our boy a hum- i rning Chorus —Look out for tlie Engine! Ac. j The ladies here our presence cheer with their bewitch’ j ing smiles, To gaze upon such lovliuesp, we'd travel many miles, j We ll drink to them in bumpers large, and wish them all success. And trust their lot in life may be unmiugled happi- | ness. Chorus —Look out for tlie Ladies, Ac. • My song is sung; I'll sing no more, for 1 am out of breath But trust that no one here will say, He’s bored me. most to death. We kindly thank you for this treat—'twill cheer our homeward way— 4 And hope when you come down next weok, that you will get your pay. Chorus —Then Lookout for tho Engine, Ac. Wear und Tear of Engine. Zerah Colburn makes the following extraordi nary statement in an article in the Railway Times:—“Tho average annual deterioration of American engines is from eight to twelve per cent., upon their first cost, while five cents per mile aro required for repairs, so that generally our engines destroy themselves nt tho rate of ten dollars value per day when in full use. This cau bo easily established by proofs.” Engines cost from SBOOO to SBOOO. Taking the average cost at $3500, and calculating that tho engine is used 300 days in tho year, tho wear would amount to $ 1000 per year. Tho Erie Railroad has 137 engines, and at this estimate their an nual cost must be $518,000, allowing that they arc all in use.— Boston Journal. Direct Foreign Cotton Trade. Wo have been shown an important lettor addressed to C. (J. Baylor, tsq. late U. States Consul nt Amsterdam, and Editor of tho Cotton Plant, by tho President of a powerful and wealthy European Commercial Company. This lotter is in conclusion of a correspondence which has been going on for some timo between Mr. Baylor nnd European influences in regard to the importance of a Continental Dopot for cot ton. From the language and tone of tho letter beforo us tho most favorable disposition is manifested, and the President has notified Mr. Baylor that ono of the company was to sail for America in time to boat the Memphis Conven tion. At Memphis tho plan of a tour will be agreed upon. His tour is to enable this gentle man, as the confidential friend and agent of the European Company, to inform them of tho con dition of the cotton-growers, and their disposi tion to participate in any general movement such as is contemplated by direct trade. Tho objoct will also be to give certain assurances to the planters of the determination of European capital to co-operate in the formation of a Con tinental Depot of Cotton. This tour must prove interesting, not only on account of the oppor tunity it will give intelligent European society to judge of our Southern friends, but also in re gard to a chango in tho destination of that por tion of the cotton crop which now goes circui tously to the manufacturers of tho contiuent. — Nat. Intelligencer. Sunday Tippling in Scotland. On the Bth ult., nearly 200 gentlemen in Edin burgh agreed to ascertain tho actual amount of Sunday traffic in the public houses of that city, and their report, entering into the statistics of each house, tho character of tho visitors, Ac., has just been published. There aro in all 461 licensed houses in Edinburgh, and 812 of these wore open on tho Sunday referred to. The visitors were—22,2o2 men, 11,931 women, 4631 children under 14 years of age, nnd 3032 chil dren under 8 years of age. Total amount during tho day, 41,796. American Clipper Ships. The competition among American clipper ships, has risen so high, that a challenge has been given and accepted, between the owners of two orack vessels of this description, to race to San Francisco for a bet of ten thousand dollars, j Oce of the ships belonging to Boston, and the , other to New York; and each is considered, by her proprietor, the fastest in the world. We ato always glad to record tho triumphs of our mer cantile marine, as well as tonoto tho continued , improvements in the art of building aud rigging ships, but wo think that tho competition, to which much of these triumph and improvements are to be attributed, aro purchased at too dear a price if tho public morals are violated, ns in this instance. To our old fashioned notions gambling is not the loss gambling, because rich ship owners are engaged iu it, instead of miser ; tiblo half-starved swindlers. To win a paltry live dollars on a card is an indictable offence, j and, if proved on a man, sends him to the pon | itontiury. If two ragged sweeps are caught j pitching pennies on a common, the police snaps ! thorn up immediately. But two millionaires may advertise, in every newspaper in the Union, i that they intend to gamble for ten thousand j dollars, not indeed with pennies or cards, but with last-sailing ships, and lo! nine out ofeve ! ry tea editors either lot the act pnss in silence or openly applaud it. We cannot, in this mat ter, follow the general example. We must be lieve still that wrong is wrong, whether iuhigh places or low. If we cannot have clippers with out gambling, hotter not have them nt all. [Ehilada. Bulletin, Government mul Gov. Lriic. The course of the administration, in refer ence to the Mecilla Valley, will be guarded in the extreme, if wo are to believe the Union. At least, through the oracular restraint of that pa i per, we perceive this fact looming out, if we per ceive any thing at all. Two points, however, appear in sharp outline. One is that, so far ns tho evidence is at present in its possession, the administration believes the title of the United States to the Mecilla Valley to bo good, Com missioner Bartlett to tho contrary notwithstand ing. The other is, that the romoval of (lov. Bane should not be considered as a censure of his conduct, because* his successor had already been determined upon before this difficulty a j r( ]se. With regard to the future approbation or • disapprobation of his behaviour, tho Union is i prudently silent. From the whole tone of that journal, we judge that tho government is pro- I coed ing warily iu the matter, resolved not to commit itself until after a thorough investiga i [ion, nnd in its own time. We trust that Pres ident Pierce will avail himself,as wo remarked the other day, of this opportunity to open, if | possible, close and binding relations with Mex | ico. It is a crisis of great moment. Thespee | <ly assimilation of the Mexicans with ourselves, or its long postponement inconsequence of mu ! tually exasperated feelings, may depend, in a great measure, on the manner in which the ad -1 ministration meets tho present emergency.—l 6.
