The Bloomers. Mrs. Bloomer imagines that the reason that > women (lifter from mon is, because they are schooled and educated differently. Nothing, however, could be more unfounded. Girls dis- I fer from boys, not incidentally, but radically. The first thing that a boy does after ho is wean ed, is to straddle the banisters and ride down the stairs. The first thing a girl sets her heart on is a doll and a set of miniature cups and sau cers. The girls are given to neatness, and hate soiled garments of all kinds; boys, on the con ry, set a high valuo on dirt, and are never so happy as when sailing a shingle ship, with a brown papersail, in a mud-puddle. Mrs. Bloom er may rcasou as she may, but she will find in the end that nature is stronger than either phi losophy or suspenders.— Burlington Hu ink Eye. AVlrc Fences. The Scientific American says : “It will bo no easy matter to galvanize a rusty wire fence; but it certainly would be a good plan to prepare wire for fences by galvanizing it before it is of fered for sale. Ts rusty wire is rubbed with boiled oil, in which some red lead has been j mixed, on a warm day the rusting process will bo arrested.’’ Wiro fences must corno into ex tensive use, possessing as they do so many ad- ; vantages over fences of any other material. The Star of the Cabinet. The lion. Caleb Cushing, Attorney General, is unquestioably the lending spirit of the Cabi net. He has taken the whole building opposite the Treasury, lately occupied by the Depart ment of the Interior; and fitted up his rooms 1 in elegant style, with a regular “ audience chamber,” which is said to bo even more throng- i ed with applicants for office than the “.0010-! room” of the White House. The Judicial ap pointments have been transferred to the Attor ney General's Department; and various other ‘• patronage” placed in his hands. In Wash ington, Mr. Cushing has already recived the ! soubriquet of *• Richelieu;” and he is evidently crowding the Secretary of Slate in the struggle for executive iuflucnce anil popular admiration. As an accomplished scholar and an adroit states man, Mr. Cushing has no equal in the Cabinet. Asa politician. Mr. Marcy cun beat him utloug odds.—.Ve 10 York Mirror. ftupprcssloii!* tlie Wellington Des patches. The papers were originally sot in type exact ly as they had been written, but their illustri ous editor, always considerate for others, struck out all the names and every sentence which might give pain, and to such nn extent, that matter sufficient for six additional volumes was, it is said, cancelled. The typographical duty j was so honorably conducted by Messrs. Clowes, that neither the head of that vast establishment, nor Mr. Murray, who published the book, over possessed or even saw the proof-sheets. One j copy alone exists of the entire work, and it con sists of the identical sheets marked by the i Duke’s revising pen. This indeed is n typo- I graphical rarity, which future Roxburghes and i Dihdins may sigh to possess, and Humes and Hallams to peruse; and when the present gen- • cration is passod, when personal considerations : ceaso to operate; and history can fairly claim | its rights, these now sealed volumes will raise | their author to even a higher pinnacle, by a ! more complete display of hfs genius, and a fur- j ther revelation of the inadequacy of the means by which ends so great were accomplished. ; Then, as he remarked himself, “ When my pa- ! pors are read, many statues will have to be ta ken down.— Quarterly Review. The N. Y. Reporters. The New York Reporters are the most tin- j grateful wretches alive. On the occasion oftho lute sad accident, at Norwalk, a squadron of j them wore speedily on the ground, but who had ‘ been anticipated by Mr. Hotchkiss, of the Now j Haven Courier, who generously furnished thorn : with all the particulars. They professed them- ! selves highly gratified with his courtesy, and i promised to make honorable mention of his j name in their accounts—instead of which, they all reportod him as among the “dead and horri- I bly mangled !” without even a deeentretlection * on his “past lifo and services.” If any doubt the necessity of a Sab- ■ bath, in order to the maintenance of our civil j and religious institutions, let them look to those ! which havo made the experiment ofliving with out them. What was ancient Rome, with her j 6,000,000 or 7,000,000 when she had no Sab- j baths, but the grand theatre of inhumanity and crime, whoso deleterious influence has over , since been felt all over tho world ! What was France whon she introduced her decades and blotted out the weekly Sabbath? What have been Mexico and South America? And it may bo asked, what are they now? The Memphis Whig of tho 12th, inst., says : —As tho passenger train on tho Memphis and Charleston Railroad was coming down ; from Moscow yesterday, a crow was discovered j some distance ahead, running along on tho rail, j Onward, and on came tho “iron horse,” with lightning speed, each evolution of the wheel coming nearer and nearer his black majesty, ho still running at his utmost speed, evidently try ing to keep the lead, until the locouiotivo was within a few feet of him, when he stretched his wings to soar away, but it wus too late; to the | iron monster was upon him and quicker than thought his body was severed in twain by the whoelts passing over him. Territories to Become Stales. Utah would make twenty States of tho size of Now Hampshire; Nebraska, fifteen; Indian, twenty; Northwest, sixty-five. Total, one hun dred and twenty-six States. Should these Ter ritories have an equal population to the square mile with Now Hampshire, they would contaiu a population of above thirty-eight million souls. The great combined railway, carriage and foot suspension bridge, now constructing at Niagara Falls, is being pushed forward with en ergy, and is expected to be ready for the trains by the first of May next. It will be one of the most remarkuble architectural works in the world. A\ T AHPESE. OK HAIR GLOSS.—-An Indian ?
