The French speak in the nose, the <■’• rm.tns ■ in tho throat, and the English through the teeth. Hooks ami papers wore formerly sold only at stalls; and the dealers therefore came to be call ed stationers. A pokor laid over a fire concen trates the heat of the pnssingsinoke, and creates a draught through the tire. Water is called hard when, from containing too much carbonic ! acid, it holds lime in solution. A pound of wheaten flour consists of bran three ounces, starch ton ounces, gluten three-quarters of an ‘ ounce, and sugar one -quarter. The spring of a watch weighs 0.10 of a grain, and a pound of stool makes 50,000; springs a pouiuPof steel cost 3d, and a single spring 2d, so that 50,000 pr * luce , £llO. Turnpikes were so called from poles or bars swung on a staple, and turned either way when the dues were paid. A turnpike-road by ‘ law, is sixty feet wide, and parish roads about 1 thirty foot. Children lose weight during the first three days after birth; at the age of a week they sensibly increase; after onoyear they triple j weight; then they require six years to double their weight, and thirteen to quadruple it. [National Hospitality. When Kossuth landed in America, wo were disposed to regard him with the profoundett respect, as an earnest and disappointed patriot. ! We considered him a refugee republican, who would either accept the permanent home we of fered, or abide among us in modOßtcontontmunt until lie saw tho moment when his voice or hi arin might be again raised in behalf of liunga- t ry. liut there was a double mistake. We mis- : took Kossuth, and Kossuth mistook us. lie i scarcely touched our shores, before he boldly throw ofl* all disguise, and informed us that he ! was not a tamo seeker of rest in America, hut that he came to teach us our duty as to the dif fusion of modern liberty among mankind, and , to enforce his surprising doctrines by anew in- ; terpretation of that sacred document which, in our simplicity, wo had always believed the Father of his Country designed as a warning 1 against interference with the a Hairs of Europe. This was done, we have said, boldly : but we do not think it was done, rankly. K-i.-suth was deceived, partly by his advisers, and p rtly by his own judgment of our motives in welcoming him to America. His ardent soul was full of j hope for Hungary; and if he,made the mistake i to suppose that his tongue could bewilder us in ! to aflbrding ‘his cause’ the aid of our gold and men, we umy pardon him for the patriotic error though we cannot lorgive him for the conceited . under valuation of our common sense. Although Kossuth was thus disponed to vio- , late the hospitality we proffered him, by enga- I ging the government or the people openly in j hostile declarations against Austria and ltussia ! he was nevertheless suitably entertained and supplied while on the eleemosynary tour. The great international law which protects political refugees, and takes them out of the category of felons, renders them safe so long as they do not abuse the hospitality of the country in which they abide by making or inciting war against the states with which their domicil is at peace. The policy and feeling of ourgoverninont in re gard to Kossuth’s conduct were so soon declar ed that his journey was a harmless one, and the j continent of Europe was undisturbed by his pro- ‘ gross.— Unit. The College of Cardinals.. This sacred College is an ancient institution; 1 how old is not known with any exactness. C.sr- j dinal bishops and Cardinal clerks are mention ed in a decree of Nicholas 11, who became ; Bishop of Borne about tho year 11*011, which decree altered tho mode of electing the Pope. Tho term Cardinal, however, had been in use j long before that date, and seems to have been ! employed to designate the principal ministers! of churches. It was used in the Latin and Gal- j lioan churches, as well as in that of Romo. I The Rev. Hugh £to well Brown, of Liverpool, ! England, in a couple of interesting lectures on : tho “Collogo of Cardinals,” which a friend lias put into our hands, says that Nicholas 11 first i formed tho Cardinals into a “College.” They numbered thirty-five,LeingscvonCardinal bish ops, who occupied the seven suburbicariau sees, and tweuty-eight cardinal clerks, who were the chief presbyters of the twenty-eight parish churches of Homo. The constitution of tho College was materially altered by Pope Al exander 111, and by a decree of the third Lat te ran Council, held at Rome in 1771), the elec tion of tho Pope was confided solely to tho Col lege. Before that he bad been elected by the cler gy siul peoplo. From the time of the election of tho Pope being invested in the Cardiualate, the College of Cardinals became a great and impor tant institution in tho ltmnish Church. At the latter end of tho sixteenth century Pope Sixtus V, finally fixed tho number of Cardinals at sev enty. It remains now in all important particu lars as ho left it, consisting of. when it has its full complement of members, six Cardinal bish ops, fifty Cardinal priests and fourteen Cardinal deacons. Mr. Brown makes the following dis tinctions: “A Cardinal may boa bishop, and yet not a Cardinal bishop. A Cardinal bishop must be the bishop of one of tho six sees already nam ed, Ostia, Porto, Sabina, Palestrina, Albano, Franseati: unless ono of these be his episcopal seat, ho is not a Cardinal bishop, though he may bo both Cardinal and bishop. So Cardin al Wiseman is not a Cardinal bishop, although , be is a bishop, even an archbishop, and a Car dinal withal. Still he is not a Cardinal bishop, because he is not the bishop of nny of the six suburbicarian sees. So also, a Cardinal priest 1 may boa bishop, or an archbishop. This is i Dr. Wiseman's case. He is a Cardinal priest, as he informs his flock in his pastoral. “Wo have to announce to you, dearly beloved in Chri t that, as if still further to add solemnity and I ! honor before tho church to this noble act of apostolic authority, und to givo an additional murk of paternal benevolence towards the ; Catholics of England, his holiness was pleased to raise u., in the private consistory of Monday ; the 30th of September, to the rank of Cardinal I priest of the Holy Roman Church.’ But the Car j diual priests must have titles derived l'roiu some i church in Rome: und thus we And, that Cardin j al Wiseman lias a church there, for he says 1 that his holiness a-sigued us. afterwards, for J our title in the private consistory, which weat ! tended, the church of f*t. Pudentiana, in which rfi. Peter is groundediy believed to have enjoy ! ed the hospitality of tho noble and partly lirit : ;h family of the senator Puduns.’ ‘Obis is i the only remnant of the right to elect their thishups, anciently enjoyed hy the Roman der ! gy. The Cardinal priests arc* appointed to some parish chuivh in Rome: the (cardinal deacons, ! also, to some coclesiasticul function there: so 1 that tho Cardinals are still tho representatives (in appearance) of the Romish clergy. Although tho Cardinals have been almost exclusively clergymen, still laymen may and liavo been made Cardinals. Tho Cardinal Al bani, who managed the elections of three suc ; cossive l’opos, Pius VIII, Leo XU, and Grego |ryXV l, was a layman, unordained. In coun j ci!, and in their oilicial capacity, each Cardinal ! is distinguished by the title under which ho was , raised to the CarJiualate. Thus Dr. AViscman | recognized ur Rome, not as Cardinal Wi.*e ■ man. but as tho Cardinal St Pudentiana. The Cardinalitial dross is showy and really splendid. , ced cap is sent by tho Pope to the man whom . he intends to exalt to the office: while the hat j is never sent to any but those of royal blood, being in all ot ur cases placed upon the new I Cardinals head by the hands of the Popo him : self. The ‘’Cardinalitial h*u” was first giveu iu the year 1213. it is triangular. The other ! portions of dress are red stockings, and red tu nic, cloak or marrtfb. If a member of a religi , nus order be made a Cardinal, however, lie con tinues to dress iu the costume of his own frater nity. | Os course many members of the Sacred Col lege are possessed of great wealth, but this is ! not derived irom their ollioe, the salary of which is aboul£Soo a year, subject to a deduction of (on per cent. He may hold other offices, tem | poral or spiritual, and receive a stipend from thorn also. For fourteen days after a now Car dinal is appointed, ho is not permitted to speak j in the consistory or vote in the conclave. Car dinal Medici, afterward Loo X, was made a ( ardinal at tho ago of thirteen; many others have received the hat in mere boyhood. To tunny of our readers these facts will con vey no inlormatien; to still more; however, they will exhibit the nature and constitution of the Sacred College in a more concise form than u sual, and will probably be interesting.
