Prof. Rainey vs. Science.
It hits hitherto beeii the custom with public
lecturers, especially tlUse possessed of “ Sci
entific attainments,” to commend Science to
their hearers, and refer the decision of scientific
questions to scientific men. Prof. Rainey, how
ever, takes a different view of the matter. In
his lecture a week ago on tho “ Caloric En
gine,” ho proved as clearly that men of science
were unsound reasoners aud unsafe guides, as he
proved tho “practicability and success of tho
now motor.”
The lecturer was very eloquent, on tho nar
row-mindedness, and “dog-iu-tha-ruauger” dis
position of thisclassof men. Is ever was there
such a set of unmitigated stupids—such a clique
of bigoted old fogies, as tho writers of scientific
books.
This outcry against science and its cultiva
tors, has been tho prominent characteristic of
Quackery of all kinds, in all times. Every pur
blind ass in tho nation, is roady to swear, and
lo verily believes it, that he cau frame a bettor
constitution and a better code of laws, than any
nation was ever blessed with. Every noodle
who has learned tho uamos of nerve, liver, and
especially membrane, is prepared to prove as
cioar as mud, that ad diseases proceed from im
purity of tho blood, which is no disease at all,
but a consequence of too much mineral medi
cine j and be cau show from no less than three
cases, that, nobody in tho universal world, is so
ignorant of nature and proper treatment of dis
eases, as a regular scientific physician.
That men of science make mistakes, nobody
denies. They are but students, and science will
be progressive while the world stands. Hut
where scientific men have made one mistake,
unscientific men have made thousands. Where
they have hindered for a time the reception of
one now truth, or tho introduction of one now im
provement,—they have prevented the mass of
the world from adopting a thousand errors, and
tho capitalist from squandering millions of
money.
Tho position of the scientific professor re
minds me of tho question that took the round of
the newspapers a few weeks ago. It was sumo
what after this fashion—D. says all Englishmen
ure liars. But i). is himself an Englishman.—
Now does D. lie ?
The lecturer scorned deeply impressed with
tho truth, that there area great many thingsa
bout which we know very little, if anything :par
ticularly;with reference to the sources of power.
lie illustrated his views on this subject by a ref
erence to the immense water power nf Niagara
1* alls. There, said tho Prof, arc so many mil
lions of horse power constantly being expended
yet it is as constantly renewed ! But how ?
could any one explain it ? lie could not. Now
science long since explained this matter to her
disciples; they know as much about it as is
known of most operations in uaturo. But Prof.
Rainey don't know, perhaps, his acquaintance
with tho teacher above named has not been’
quite intimate enough to warrant his making
tho necessary enquiry. But he don’t know,
and, ho takes it for granted that if Prof. Rai
ney don't know, a Savannah audience must bo
enveloped in tho same darkness.
But it must have been manifest to the audi
ence that there were other things, of the know
ledge of which ho was equally innocent.
Ho did not know, (or if ho did ho made no
effort to help his audience to the knowlcdgo,)
that tho machino of Ericsson’s which tho “Sci
entific American” condemned three years ago
as perpetual motion, and of courso, as impracti
cable, was not tho same machine which propell
ed tho “Caloric ship Ericsson,” —but differs
from it in an important particular. The im
pression left upon the audience was that tho
“Scientific Amorican” condemned the machino,
the model of which was exhibited for tlici Uustra
ion of the lecture. Now, let any one who has
an opportunity, refer to tho “Scientific Ameri
can,” vol. vii, page GO—and ho will seo a full
description of tho machine then talked of,
which was patonted in England in 1850
and in this country in 1351. It will ho seen
that in that engine tho air, instead of being al
lowed to escape after having performed its
work, was returned to the supply cylinder to bo
worked over again. And this engine, was
then condemned by all men of science and prac
tical commou sense, has been thrown aside by
its inventor, (at least so muoh of it as was tho
special object of condemnation,) experience
having at length, forced upon Capt. Ericsson,
the deductions of science.
“The Scientific American,” theu, did not con
demn the Engines of the Caloric Ship, throe
years ago, on tho ground of their claiming a
principle akin to perpetual motion, and after tho
trial trip, on tho ground of her Inferiority to tho
“Baltic.” The editor of the “Scientific Ameri
can,” ond tho scores of scientific Engineers who
coincido with him, in opposing tho oxtravagont
presentions of Capt. Ericsson and his friends,
are perfectly able to sustain themselves in this
oontroversy. I offer nothing for the,’purpose of
defending them. But it is important to the
public at largo that Scientific men, who are the
only reliable authorities on questions of practi- ,
cal science, should bo sustained, at least until :
those who dosiro to supplant them in the con- i
fidenco of the people, have established their
claim to superiority.
The friends of the “new motor;” take an atti
tude in all controversies on the subject, which
would lead those not well acquainted with it to
suppose, that the opposition of Scientific men
was based upon an idea of the entire impractica
bility of the Air Engine; that is, that it cannot
bo made to run at all. This is not the case, no
one at all interested in the progress of improve
ment in motive power,—was ignorant of the ;
existence of Stirling’s. Hot Air Engine, patent
ed and in use in Scotland in 1827, nud describ
ed in a book on the Steam Engine, published in
England in 1832, before Ericsson procured his
first patent (which was iu 1533.) This Engine
of Sterling's, had in it a regenerator, not so good
an oucas Ericsson’s, but working upon the same
principle. It also had the arrangement which
distinguished the Engine patented by Ericsson
in 1851, from thoso of the “Ship Ericsson;” that
is—it worked the same air over and over. It
should bediatinotly understood that it is not the
working, hut the profitable working of the En
gine that is questioned, and the question of pro
fit docs not turn upon the question of coal or
the number of men required, but how fast can
she run ?
The whole subject being one upon which the ‘
great mass of the people can have but little op- !
portunity of information, I propose sending
you iri a few days, (if you can make room for ‘
it) a description of the Air Engine of Ericsson
illustrated by diagrams. This I do, not in op
position to the tfrticrijition given by Prof. Rai
ney, (which was fl.ll Very good, so farasitwont)
but for the benefit of those who had not the op
portunity of hearing that lecture. M-
South Carolina Hemp.
♦Some of the planters of South C'atolinn, it is
slated, are turning their attention to the growth
of hemp, and design testing thoroughly the ca- :
pacity of the soil for that purpose. A friend at j
our elbow suggests that as hanging is a very !
common thing in Carolina, it is very proper to
increase the sue l.lies there for that puip se.
Railroads in Mexico.
El Monitor Republican of Mexico, snv the
project of constructing a railroad between the ‘
capital and Tacubaya, and other points in the !
neighborhood, will soon bo commenced, under :
the protection of Gen. Santa Anna, who has nl
ways anxiously desired to sec such improements
in the country. The perseverance of Mr. Comic j
Do La Cortna, and his fortunate choice of the ;
well known and skilful engineer, Don Carlos ,
Butterfield, will soon enable us to see this use
ful work completed. Without doubt this road
will give rise to now enterprises of a similar
kind.
Plurality vs Majority.
“The advantages derived from the partial a
doption of the plurality system In the elections
arc so obvious, and have proved so acceptable
to the citizens of Massachusetts, that wo do not ’
believe they will readily surrender them. At !
bast, we ho e not. Political schemers and
traders may labor to restore the old majority ‘
prinripio under all circumstances, but people ;
who have something to do beside attending the ;
polls, will not be likely to establish a law that j
will tax their time unreasonably in the choice j
of public servants." —Ronton !*oHt
The old adage, “Fainto heart never won j
fair ladye,” seems to be still as true as ever. The
X. Y. Tribune says: —
Private letters from London state that Chev
alier Wykuff, of whose strange love adventures
the public have been apprized, has reappeared
in that city in company with Miss Gamble, (at
whose instigation he was locked up at Genoa,
we believe,) and the story now is that the pair
are such warm friends that their marriage is i
looked for at any moment; in fact that their iu- {
tention of marriage has boon publicly avowed
bv them.
\othtng new under the Sun.
♦Sir. Edward Coke says he has discovered f;om
the entries iu John Evelyn, that the trials ofthc !
Jesuits, in his time, (1679) were taken in short \
haw/. This writer ulso speaks of a way wiser, :
to operate in a eoach, and declare the speed of
it. lie also published a plan for consuming the
smoko of large cities. In addition to these, it
may bo observed that, in the time of the Empe
ror Caracalla, there was in Italy a contrivance
by which fresh water could be distilled from salt
water.
The Condition of India.
The “Friend of China” says that in tho Pres
idency of Madras, “upwards of twenty millions
have been reduced to such utterwretchedness of
condition and abjectness of fooling, that it would
be difficult to find a parallel iu any other coun
try.” According to one of tho Government en
gineers, two hundred and fifty thousand perish
miserably by famine in another Presidency,
through the neglect of Government.
Railrou'ds iu Canada.
A most gigantic system of consolidated rail
roads will go into operation in Canada under
the name of the Grand Trunk Railway. It em
braces the Quebec and Richmond railroad; the
Lawrence and Atlantic from the lino of the
Provinces to Montreal; tho Grand Trunk rail
road from the latter city to Toronto, and the
Toronto and Guelph road, which extends tho
lino westward to Lake Huron. It also embraces
a lease of tho Atlantic and St. Lawronoe road
from the city of Portland on tho Atlantic sea
board to tho Canada line, thus bringing the
grand terminus into tho tcritory of tho United
States/ It also contemplates a lease of the Ot
to*va Valley railroad, when built from Montreal ‘
to Bytown. Tho whole lino will bo constructed |
on the broad or sixfoot guage, so as to save
transhipments of goods, and under tho bonded
system, goods from foreign ports can bo loaded j
into tho cars at tho seaboard, and transmitted
through the United States to any part of Cana
da. A costly tubular bridgo, similar to that ov
er Menai Straits, in England, is to be erected
across tho St. Lawrence at Montreal. The
capital of the company in stock and bonds is
nine and a half millions pounds sterling, or
about forty-five million dollars. Tho Atlantic
and St. Lawrence portion of tho road is now in
running order from Portland, Me. to tho lino:
tho other portions will bo completed successive
ly as fust as practicable.
Strange Disease.
A Boston lady has at this time a somewhat
novel disease —acontinunl motion of the tongue,
which no device, effort of tho will, or medica
tion coutrols. Wo do not mean that she is a
nuisance ns a talker or a retailer of street gos
sip. On the contrary, a worthier woman does
not exist. She has expended live hundred dol- ‘
lars among the dentists for artificial teeth, which
her unruly member has knocked out so repeat
edly that they are now wholly abandoned. Her
tonguo is moving nimbly and involuntarily
within the mouth, against the walls of the cheeks.
In conversation tho organ takes on a normal
action, but runs instautly into its usual rapidity,
of motion at theconclusion ofasentence.—Rot
