Wo perceive by the synopsis of the pro C odings of the Presbyterian <General Assembly, that the Oswego Presbytery has boon rebuked by Dr. Cox, for refusing to send delegatee vvhilo the Assembly held connexion with slavery. The foundation lor tlio granite monu- | incut to the memory of tho victims of British ! principles mid prison walls, during tho occupa tion of New York by .Sir Henry Clinton, bus \ been completed in Trinity church yard, and tho j work is rapidly progressing-. TJ3* A tree of tho Sierras, in New Mexico j and Oregon, which rises to tho height of four j Hundred feet, and is of immense diameter, ex- ‘ tides juice that, when crystallized, takes the! name of pine sugar. It is almost as'white as the ! best refined loaf sugar, and bus a delicious ar omatic taste. rrp. The Poston /'o/ snj s—"We saw a fe male rag-pieker, the other day. with her smear ed fingers decorated with no lower than six gold rings. We didn't object, to it at all, but it seem ed to us very like running gentility into the ashes.” We saw, in Boston, an illustrated copy of “Gray’s Klegy in a Country Church Yard,” with a portrait of—who, think you? “Why. Gray, of course.” No, sir; Daniel Webster! Look out for a Boston edition of the Bible, with n portrait of Ihiniel Webster.— Brandon Post. A eotemporary says that tho insertion ! of marriages and deaths in newspapers should : be paid lor, for this reason. One is ah ndver- ! tisement of copartnership, and the other is a no tice of dissolution. Business is business. .TTsf’ At lluldernoss, N. 11., one hundred bushels of Shoo pegs are madu daily, most of them being shipped to foreign ports. On the Ist of January, six hundred barrels were start i ed for Liverpool. Tike Revolution in Buenos Ayres. ‘ The accounts which we have lately received ‘ of the contiuuunco of hostilities in Buenos ! Ayres, are fully confirmed byjdates to April 13, at which time Urquiza was about nlno miles from tho city, with a strong Military force of the country party, but proposing to attempt new negotiations beforo a final appeal to arms. A letter dated Rio, April 13, says: The Report on ‘Change to-day is that Ur quiza in person was besieging Buenos Ayres w ith a force of 8,000 men, backed by promises of'assistance from the Brazilian which wishes to change tho Argentine Repub lic to a monarchy, and make Urquiza its head, but tho truth of this report I do not guaran tee. A l'alil Fire Department F Tho Philadelphia Bulletin says the commit tee of 25, appointed at the town meetingonthe 26th of February last, to procure tho passage of a bill for a paid department, has reported that it failed in its mission, principally, if Hot wholly, in consequence of tho terror in which tho city and county members held tho firemen as voters. The committee therefore, recommend, that, at tho ensuing election, a ticket shall bo put into the field, without distinction of party, pledged to favor a paid department. Great Texas Land Case Decided. A suit which was instituted at New Orleans, in November, 1851, in the name of Jacob Mus sina, for the recovery of the rights and interests upon certain lands situated opposite tho city of Matamoros, Mexico, and now the site ofthe town of Brownsville, Texas, has just been deci ded in favor of tho plaintiff. The verdict di rects that all tho property acquired by Bussio & Jlord be conveyed to tbo plaintiff within 90 days; that Messrs. Basse, I lord, Bidden and Ailing pay tho plaintiff $25,000, damages, nnd that Beiden and Ailing convey to him all the property purchased by them. In default of de fondants making tho conveyances, the jury a ward the plaintiff tho sum of s2l 1,000, in lieu of the property. The plaintiff is to refund to the defendants the amouut they originally paid l'ur the property. Hotel telegraphs. During a recent visit to Now York, wo were much interested with the telegraphic arrange ment at the Irving House. A branch wire con nects with tho main wire, having its terminus at a convenient room in the Irving, and an op erator always in attendance. Visitors from Philadelphia, stopping at this house, can send their messages home, sit down and read the pa per or smoko a cigar, and receive an answer without taking offthoir slippers. Wo would sug gest tho introduction of this system into the principal hotels of other cities. Sharp Shooting of Iloyal Game. In tho debate on the Canada Clergy Reserves bill, ashort time since in the British House of Lords, tho Bishop of Oxford rose to make some explanation of a previous remark, which had proved olfonsiro to the Earl of Derby. In ma-j king the explanations the reverend gentlemen said “tho noble carl must have seen that | he (the Bishop of Oxford) made the allusion with a smile in a playful way, and with no iu- j tention to do what was offensive.” Tho Earl of Derby immediately responded, “My lords, I accept at once tho explanation which has been offered by the right reverend prolate ;but when ho tells me that it is impos sible for him to sayanything offensive becausojhe has a smiling face, he will forgive if I quote in his presence from a well known author, with out intending iu the least to apply the words to him, “A man may smilo, nnd smile, and boa vil lain.” Atnid the cheers nnd laughter which followed the Earl of Clarendou, greatly excited, took up , tho cudgel temporal in bobalf of his reverend colleague, saying among other things that ho was not accustomed, even in tho language of poetry, to hear such a word as “villain” applied to any noble Kftd in the House. Loid Derby j replied, reaffirming the declaration that ho j made the quotation without intending in the least to apply it to tho bishop ; and ho thought it would bo quite time enough for tho i noble earl to vent his indignation when he him self became tho subject of personal attack. The affair created quite a sensation in that usually monotonous and grave assembly—tbo British House of Lords.— Poston Journal.
