SATURDAY, JUNE 4. ~’ c‘ A correspondent of the Providence Pott alludes to the reeoutrail road accidents, and the 1 rightful loss of human life by which they wore attended, and says that for some time he has not travelled without Ills name in his hat, with his place of residence, and a duplicate of the direction on his trunk. If ho experiences the common lot of travellers, and gets killed in any of the various ways now in vogue, the rail way officials, who are always exceeding polite to the remains of the passengers, will not only find this, but also full directions where to apply for money to defray the expenses for sending home the body. XlI” The French government as w o have he- 1 fore stated, has declined, alter a six months in* vestigation, grantiug any pecuniary aid to the I several companies offering to run steamers to various ports in North and South America, on certain conditions. Havre is to have a line to New York nevertheless. A company at Lyons has made all the necessary arrangements, hoping, of course, ilit succeeds, eventually to 1 get a good contract for the mails. Two serew stcainers of .'I,OOO tons each ore to be built first; I one to be done on the Ist of May next —eleven ‘ months hence—-and the other on th • Ist of July . following. The idea at present is to give them engines of only three hundred horsepower; but these will probably be abandoned in time. A screw steamer of I).000 tons, and with three hun dred horses, would never do the distance in less than seventeen days; and this would be fatal. The steamers are to bo built at N antes, and the , engines at Havre. llaililiug Material. The Philadelphia l uitod Slates Gazette, of the 10th instant, thus introduces our new build- , ing material— the “ AhtLn.u i Concrete Limc- Htune' —to its numerous readers. Wo hope this artielo may have the effect of dire ting public attention to this stone, for a more durable, sub stantial and beautiful material for building does not exist, and for cheapness, it will be beyond the reach of competition. Os late years, in this city, there is more vari ety in the material used for building purposes than there was formerly. Blue marble, white i marble, red stone, Connecticut brown stone, blue Quincy granite, common gray granite, iron ; and fancy brick, allornament the fronts of pub lic and private edifices, presenting an agreeable ‘ diversity of stylo and appearance. If any one | description is more prevalent among the new erections it u the brown stone; and our citizens are so used to the lighter appearance of marble steps, bases, lintels, sills, ect., that the contin ued increase of the dark material is in some quarters deprecated, as likely to impart too gloomy au air to our street architecture. By such as hold these views, and yet aro not ad mirers of white marble or induced to use it, the discovery of anew building material in Alaba ma, of an entirely different hue from any now in use among us, will bo looked to with interest. This article is called “concrete limestone,” and when dressed, presents a beautiful light yellow color, [t resembles marble in the couipactnes of its texture. It is found in a quarry at (juiuestown, Ala., within a few hundred yards of the Alabama river! The quarry is about half a mile in extent, and furnishes superb speci mens. Blocks seventeen feet square on the surface may be got out, and pillars of ‘any desir able length. Tho stone crops out at intervals, ! in largo masses, from both bluffs of tho Alabama and Tombigbec, commencing about one hun dred miles from Mobile by water, and extend ing some thirty miles up both rivers. In quan tity it is inexhaustible, and scientific and prac tical men have highly approved of its quality as a building material. Tho quarries are so located that the stone can bo got out at very little expense; and the two rivers are navigable at all seasons from Mobile i to the quarries, so that tho stone could be ship- ! ped to Mobile and from thence to Philadelphia at a small cost. A similar stone is used in St. J Louis ami Louisville, and also in Paris, though tho latter is not so hard or durable as the Ala bama stone. A block of it lias been sent to Washington fur the Monument. Tho “Bath Stone,” much used in London, and greatly ad- j mired on accounts of its color, is similar to this j concrete limestone. The quarry at Gainestowu is now owned by a Mobile firm. If the stone be all that it is described, it is well worth the : immediate attention of our capitalists who pur pose erecting now. ornamental edifices. Its col or alone would recommend it, without consider ing its durability and compactness of texture; and the popularity of a similar material in Pa ris and Loudon attests its value. A Boy'gLettrr. The following specimen of a boy’s letter, from an English Comic Annual, is one of tho richest things of the kind wo have over seen. There is, as an exchange remarks, such a truth of character in it—so much of that spirit of drol lery mixed with mischief, which often prevails in the young rogues of tho male sox, that one | cannot help declaring it to be, in its own words, i “capital fun.” Tho epistle is sent by a coun try boy to what a cockney would call his, “friend in town.” “Now, Bob, I’ll tell you what I want. I want you come down here for tho holidays. Don t be afraid. Ask your sister to ask your mother to ask your father to let you come. It’s only ninety miles. The. two, prentices, George and Wil’l, aro horc to make farmers of; ami brother Nick is took home from school to help in agri culture. We like farming very much, it’s capi tal fun. Us four have a gun and go out shoot ing; it’s a famous good gun, and sure to go off if you don’t full cock it. Tiger is to be our sliont iug dog, as soon as ho has left off killing tho sheep, lie’s real savage, and worries cats beau tiful. Before father comes down wo mean to bait our bull with him. There's plenty of new rivers about, and we’ro going a fishing as soon as we’vo mended our top joint. We've a pony, too, to ride upon, when wo can catch him, but he’s looso in the paddock—he has ueither mane nor tail, to signify, to lay hold of. Isn’t it. fine, Bob ? \ T ou must come. If your mother won’t give you leave to allow you—rqn away. Re member you turn up Goswell streot, to go to Lincolnshire, and ask for Widdlefen Hall. There’s a pond full of frogs, but wo wou’t pel i them till you come; lot it be before Sunday, as : there’s our own orchard to rob, and tho fruit’s to bo gathered on Monday. If you like sucking 1 raw eggs, we know where tho bens lay, and ■\ mother don’t; and I’m bound there’s lots of bird’s nests. Do come. Bob, and I’ll show you j tho wasps nest, and everything ik:** car make : you comfortable. I dare say you could borrow • your father’s Volunteer inuskot of him without ! him knowing it; but be sure to bring therauiru \ ns we have mislaid ours by firing it off.” {) AIM AS.- 100 wh I j. I.
