MONDAY, JUNE 5. Correspondence of the Journal of Commerce. The Correspondence of Irish Eml* grants. London; May 13, 1853 There are a few facts connected with tho cor respondence of Irish emigrants in America and their relatives and friends in tho mother-coun try which are deeply interesting, as showing the strong and abiding attachments which bind them to each other across the ocean. Now live-eighths of all the foreign trades of the Cnitod States aro with tho United Kingdom. These vast commercial transactions must in volve a vast commercial correspondence between the two countries. Bat nearly tho whole of this commercial correspondence flows into or from England or Scotland. Vet, notwithstanding that tho Island of Groat Britain receives or sends away all these mercantile letters, it has boon stated on good authority, that more than one third of all tho lettors that pass between tho United Kingdom and tho United States aro transmitted to or from Ireland! And by whom are those letters written/ By tho poor Irish emigrants in the United States and their poor er relatives and friends in Ireland. Nor aro these all the letters sent and received across tho Atlantic by these Irish emigrants. Hundreds of thousand of Irishmen and women live and labor in England and Scotland. Those, too, re ceive a vast number of letters annually from America. So that there is but liftle doubt that the hard-handed children of Erin in tho United Elates and their poorer friends in the Unite<l Kingdom actually produce on<--ha{f tho corres pondence which is now carried on between the two great nations, even under tho present high rates of postage. Now it is outlie correspon dence of those emigrants that a reduction of the ocean transit charge on lettors would take the deepest effect. Tho cost of mercantile cor respondence is put in the bill and charged upon the articles of trade, like the expense of trans portation, insurance, Ac. Those who purchase these articles at the sixth remove, in tho smal lestretail shops, pay the postago on the com- l mercial letters that pass between tho two first I parties in fho transaction; but the poor emi grants and their friends at home keep no poa tago accounts with each other. Tho heart-com muning is not transferred to third parties. It all comes from their own pockets, a tax upon their own scanty means of subsistence. What j a vast impulse to their correspondence would be imparted by any Ocean Penny Postage, by j which the letter that now costs them a shilling ! Would be sent or received for three pane/ i Who can doubt, that with their strong-affection stimulated by such a facility of communication, they would pay as much postage annually as they do now, whilst they would write and re ceive four times their proseut number oflottors for their money. Every interest must plead for tho establishment of an Ocean Penny Postage. EL IIIU BUttll ITT. Japan at the Dublin Exhibition. From tho Dublin Correspondence of the London News wo extract tho following interesting de scription of the specimens of Japanese manufac tures, etc. contributed to the Exhibition by the King of Holland : Tho unique collection of manufactures, works ; of art, and curiosities from Japan, contributed to the exhibition by tho King of Holland, de mands notico, independently of its intrinsic : merits, from the circumstance that it is tho first time similar productions have been seen in Eu rope beyond tho walls of the Museum at the Hague; and an early notice is well deserved, also, because, with Dutch punctuality and bu siuess-liko management, this collection was ready for inspection at the opening of tho exhi bition when all around was confusion and pack ing cases. That branch of manufacture which, from tho place of its origin, has in this country obtained tho name of “ Japanning,” is not so largely re presented as might have been anticipated, but the comparatively few specimens are sufficient to show that tho Birmingham manufactures have not yet attained so high a degree of finish in this art as tho Japanese. It is not that the polish of the varnish is brighter, but there is a perfect evenness of surface that reflects the light equally as from a surface of ground and polished glass, without any of the irregularities so generally observable in English goods of a similar kind. It would appear that tho varnish of the Japanose must be of superior quality to that of the English, for, judgiug from a set of tea cups made of papier maehie, that material is accustomed to bo used in contact with hot water, without much injury to tho surface, and without imparting a disagreablo tasto the bev erage. There is a specimen also of a bowl for holding liquids, made of straw, japanned, which feels lighter than papier maehie and equally strong. It is evident, indeed, even from tho small variety of specimens of this branch of manufacture in the collection, that the Japanese apply tho process of japanning’ to many other uses than wo are accustomed to. Among tho warlike accoutrements, for instanco, there is a highly finished japanned shield, entirely black, xvitliout ornament, which projects in tho centre, in tho approved form of ancients shields. Whether a ball would glance from tho curva ture may bo very questionable, but it is at all events well adapted to ward off any missile pro jected by hand. The specimens of silk and velvets very clear ly show that tho Japanese makers of such fab rics can rival tho European manufacturer in tho quality of the article, however rude may be tho machinery they employ for the purpose. Some eilken cords, of various degress of thickness, will also bear comparison with any that can be produced by tho improved machinery of Eng land. Tho wax candles, of which there arc sev eral specimens deserve notice from tho pe culiarity of their shape, and the mode of manu facture. They arc made of tho hardest wax, and are evidently formed by the process ofsuc cessive dippings, like tho wax candles, in this country, tho unevenness of the surface being in like a manner subsequently removed by me chanical means. The peculiarity in their shape consists in their being conical instead of cyl indrical, the broader end being placed upper most. To give additional finish to the exte rior, the candles are pointed. The accoutrements of war do not present a [ very formidable appearance, nor is a liguroof a ; warrior armed cap-a-pie, with a visor, over the lower part of his face resembling a demoniacal mask, calculated to oxeite much alarm in any but little ehiblron. Tho fire arms are long ami heavy, and aro not adapted to be tired from the shoulder | tho swords are short, with daggois attached, and they aro inclosed in clumsy cylin drical sheaths. The armor of mail with which the model warrior is clad is composed of a woven fabric sufficiently thick to resist an arrow or tho thrust ol a spear. There is nothing in this i display of weapons and armor to deter tho j Americans from making their inroad into Ja- ‘ pan, and the only seemingly rational causo of j making it a death penalty to take arms from tho I | island, must be to prevent exposure of the de* j lenceless condition of the pooplo. The martial music consists of drums of various kinds and i with thotn aro placed several lutes and guitars, . curiously shaped: but there arc no wind instiU- I ments. The articles of luxury do not exhibit so much j ’ refinement and finished workmanship as those lof tho Chinese. There are several cabinets, but not one of them is elaborately decorated; tho , fans are common an.l the articles of a lady's t<ilet, though they indicate the great variety of ‘things requisite in tho drossing of a Japanese I belle, are rather coarsely manufactured. One cabinet is expressly adapted for smokers. There | is accuser at the top to hold tiro for lighting the pipe, with drawers underneath to contain the pipes and tobacco. The Japanese foment is very choice in his tobacco, and remarkably delicate in its use, for tho specimens of pipes i exhibited—one gold, the other silver—will not held half of a small thimbleful of the plant. A parasol, is, perhaps, more an article of necessity i than of luxury in Japan, and tho specimens of j them aro certainly nut externally ornamental, j though they deserve notice from tho materials j of which they aro constructed. Tho part that is silk in our parasols is made of ! paper creased into many folds, tho ribs of thin j spliced bamboo, and they open and close with i great oase. Tho outer covering is of a dark I color, the interior whito, which is tho reverse j of what theory would declare to be tho proper colors for repelling heat; but these paper para sols must nevertheless £orm much bettor shades than semi-translucent silk. A collection of Japanese coins, from the lar- | gest gold to the smallest silver, forms an in- ; torching part of tho collection. The gold coins aro oblong, with rounded cornors, and the value of the largest is about A6O. The smaller of the silver coins are oblong, with sharp corners, i Next to the coins aro placed specimens of .Fa- i paneso printing types. They aro made of | wood, the body of tho type being cylindrical, ! with the letter at oue end, and they must con sequently be used separately, and not sot up in “form” like our printing types. Those'who aro not experienced naturalists may bo somewhat startled at the stuffed rnous stors from Japan. What the uuexplorod parts of that island may not contain it would be pre sumptuous testate; but it requires a considera ble stretch of credibility to believe in the exis tence of flying monkeys, and of serpents with monkey’ heads, yet such objects'aro presented with indubitablo skin, hair, and bones; and it is difficult to detect where the skin of one ani mal has been joined to that of another. To ar tists so skilled in tho manufacture of monsters the creation of a mermaid would .present little difficulty; and, though there is not bodily pre sentment of one, thcro is a pictorial representa tion, which, instead of realizing the pocticq} idea of such a being, seems to be a literal copy of a mermaid, manufactured by the junction of the body of nil ape to the tail of a fish. Thcro aro several other specimens which indicate a prevalent taste for monstrosities. CRAPE SHAWLS ! CRAPE SHAWLS !!
