the death of Charles E. Tr.rpr Esq., a young
nnd promising lawyer of this city, who has been j

The Southern Recorder.
This veternn sheet published at Millcdgeville,
by Orme, Knowles & Okmk, conics to us this
week in anew dress. It is now uno of tho
neatest nnd most comely papers on our ex
change list.
Tho proprietors propose to publish a Tri-
Wcekly Recorder, during the next session of tho
Legi&luturo, should u sufficient number of sub
scribers bo obtained. The Tri-Weekly will be
made up for the most part of Legislative pro
ceedings. For the success of this particular
scheme, and for its general prosperity, the Re
corder has our best wishes.
Some youngsters to us unknown, assist
ed by an animal of tho caninie species, whose
name will perhaps remain forever a mystery,
did the “city soino service” last evening, about
dusk, by ridding Monument Square of tho pre
sence of n cow who had managed to effect an
entrance thero. Tho chase was quite lengthy
and spirited and came near having au unlucky
termination, the animal pursued , iu making its
escape, having almost upset a gentleman who
was surveying tho sport, from one of tho on
trances to tho Squaro.
Fine I'iiint luff.
Such of our readers as lovo a line picture, will
find ono worthy their inspection in tho rending
room of our neighbor of the Georgian, from tho
pencil of Mr. John Antroih s, a young and
talented artist of our city, of whose merits we
have on former occasions, spoken at some
length. The Fainting under notice, is a full
length portrait, (size of life) of the gallant but
ill-futcd Lopez, with whose deeds, and unfor
tunate end our readers are familiar. The bravo
eoldier, is attired in full uniform, and bears in
one hand the Hag of that lovely isle, to which
ho bore such affection, nml in whose behalf he
suffered ignominous death. However widely
the world may he divided, in its opinions of the
Lopez Expedition, none wo think can deny to
that ill-starred hero, who conducted it, the
purest and most noble sentiments, nor tho lofty
title of Martyr to the enii.se of Liberty.
Mr. A Mini iu s has been exceedingly hippy
in his portraiture; tho attitude is martial, bold,
und striking—tie* Coloring rich and warm,
while the fidelity of tho likeness as we are told,
by some entitled to judge of it, is ono of the
chief merits of the picture. The Painting is
soon to be rallied and we are pleased to learn
that the list is rapidly filling up.
jTT-iP* It is understood that Solomon Cohen
Esq., will accept the office of city Postmaster,
recently tendered him by tho Administration,
and that ho will shortly enter upon tho dis- 1
charge of his duties, an lin a m inner wo doubt !
not, acceptable in every way to the community. !
Our relations with the late incumbent, Mr. ‘
Morel, and with his assistants, have been 1
eminently agreeable. II > has invariably shown
us a uniform courtesy aril politeness, while his
accommodating disposition which we have been :
compelled at tiin s to tax, has always led him
to oblige us with an alacrity an 1 willingness,
which we shall ut soon forget. Tho public at
largo will join us, wo believe, in bearing testi
mony to tho worth of Mr. M. as evinced in their
relations with him.
This rotation iu office calls upon one, to be
glad and sorry both paradoxical as this may
seem, it u by no means an impossible thing,
when, as in this instance, the depo-ed, und the
“put in” are both gentlemen fully entitled to
the respect, g > . 1 will and friendly feelings of
their acquaintances, ami the community.

SAVANNAH lOmtNAl.. TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 1853
Tribute of Respect.
Savannah, June 13, 1853.
At a meeting of the Bar of Savannah, held at tho i
Court House, this day at 1 P. M., on motiou of Hon. !
Alexander Drtsdals, tho Hon. Henry R. Jackson was
called to the chair, who requested Wm. S. Basinoer j
to act as Secretary. The Hon. Charles S. Henry of
forM the following preamble and resolutions:
“It haring pleased tho all-wise Dispenser of human
events, In his providence to remove from the world in
the prime of his life and manhood, our much esteem
ed brother Crarlbs E. Tefft, Esq., after a long and
protractod illness, which he bore with Christian forti
tude and resignation, it becomes us, bis professional
brethren, now assembled for the purpose of paying a
suitbale tribute to his memory, while we deplore his
loss and deeply sympathise with his aged and respect
ed parents, to bow in humble submission to this afflic
tive dispensation; and to learn from it those practical
lessons which it so solemnly Inculcates.
Our deceased brother was admit tod to tho Bar of tho
Eastern District, after a highly crlitable examination,
in the year 1847. At that time his health was consi
dered delicate, and his fond parent, in tho hope that
it would be entirely re instate 1 by a sea voyage, ac
companied him across tho Atlantic lo Europe, and
returned with him in the fall of that year, apparent
ly much Improved iu health and strength. It was,
however, not long after, before it was manifest to ail
his friends that some fatal disease was preying on his
system, which would sooner or later terminate his
valuable life. It did so terminate it on yesterday morn
ing—the sacred Sabbath of rest, fit emblem, we trust,
of that rest to which bh immortal spirit has depart
ed.
It is not our desire to pay any unmerited compliment
to the virtues and character of our deceased brother.
But we may l>c permitted, on the present occasion, in
all truth and sincerity to say that nature endowed
j him with a mind clear, comprehensive, and energetic,
which .lie had cultivated and stored, to no inconsidera
ble degree, with much of professional aud general sil
ence and knowledge. Asa member of this Bar, be
held a highly respoctablo standing amor gut us; always
courteous, and kind, and obliging, he discharged his
professional duties and obligations with ability, nnd
tho strictest integrity and punctuality. In his disposi
tion, he was frank, friendly, nnd sociable; nnd iu his
intercourse with the world he always conducted him
self with propriety nnd decorum. Asn son, he was
1 most dutiful, affectionate, and kind. For these proinin
■ ent and bright traits which clustered round the char
! actor of our deceased brother when in life, we admired
; nnd esteemed him, and now that lie has gone from us,
! no more to return, we sensibly feel und deplore his
loss.
/>■• D therefore Resolved, That, wo deeply deplore the
curly death of our young and much esteemed brother,
j Cimki.m F. Turn, Esq.
j Resolvetl, That we sincerely sympathise nnd condole
with his aged and respected parents, nnd trust that
: they may be sustained under this alllictivo dispensu
! tiou of Providence, which lias deprived them of their
last and only child, by the consolations of that religion
i ‘‘which is as anchor to the soul, both sure and stead
fast,” In every hour of t ribulation and sorrow,
; Resolved. That iu testimony of the respect which we
I entertain for the memory of our deceased brother, we
: will attend his funeral in a b.*dy, this afternoon, at 6
j o'clock, and wear the usual badge of mourniug for the
, space of thirty days.
! /fc.Wrw/, That the foregoing preamble nnd rejoin
; tions be entered on the minute* of the Superior Court
Gy the Clerk, and that a certified copy of the same be
! traii*iuitto 1 to the parents of the deceased.
| Hknky M. Liw, Esq., iu seconding the abovepream
j ble and resolutions, made the following remarks :
Mr. Chairman,— ln rising to propose the adoption of
I tho resolutions, which have been offered, I trust, I
; may bo indulged in a brief und imperfect tribute to
| the memory of our departed associate and brother,
i who expired on the morning of yesterday after n pro
j traded illness, which be boro with patient fortitude
| and the termination of which was soothed by the
j consolation of that holy faith wbi b cheers the depar
ting spirit with the prospect of a blissful immortality.
Sir, language Is powerless to give expression to those
emotions of profound sorrow, which swell and agitate
my bosom upon this melancholy occasion. 1 have
lost one of the companions of my boyhood, one of the
associates of my youth. In addition to those reln
ti ms which in common with yourselves, gentlemen, I
sustained professionally towards the deceased, he was
bound to me by the tics o r a near aud intimate friend
ship, endeared to niy heart hy the cherished associa
tions of early life, and which had continued uninter
rupted and unbroken up to the peri .J of liis depar
ture from tiiis world.
In those traits of character attributed to him iu
I the preamble which has been presented, I recognize
a truthful sketch,a faithful and unexaggerated picture
of those graceful qualities of mind and heart, that
j beautiful accord, tlmt harmonious union of mental
I refinement aud social amenity which won f-r him,
while in life, the regard and esteem of a large circle of
acquaintances; and the lively remembrance must
deepen our sorrow as we this day militate his early
and untimely end.
i Di bearing my humble testimony to his worth, 1
I may be permitted to say that he was warm and geu
i erous iu his impulses, ingenuous In his disposition,
just and honorable in his principles, magnanimous iu
his sentiinente, pure and exemplary in his life. But
it has pleased the Almighty Disposer of events to re
move him from these transitory scones below, and iu
obedience to the stern decree, the grave is about to
close on his mortal remains even in the morning of
his promise and iu the freshness of his youth. Alas!
the fatal arrow has been sped, the unerring shaft has
been let loose, the work of the spoiler lias been ac
complished. Tho visions of hope and the dreams of
ambition for him have been forever dissolved, and
that lifeless and pulseless form, smitten by the great
conqueror, is soon to be committed to the silent cham
ber of the tomb. Our associate and friend has forev
er gone from our midst; the spirit has laid aside its
frail tenement of clay, only, as we trust, to wing its
unfettered and triumphant flight to a purer world and
j a brighter realm on high. In this melancholy dis
pensation wo are furnished with a solemn and impres
sive admonition of that inevitable destiny which a
waits us all; and to the visitation of which youth,
manhood, and hoary aud withered age are alike and
equally exposed. For,
“When the canker already the biul doth decay,
tVho can deem that bis ripeness is free from the worm?
Who ran hope to endure wlieu the youny fade away ?
Who can count on life's harvest—the blight at the
germ /”
May the lessons of our mortality so solemnly
taught us by this afflictive event, pro.luce their fitting
impressions on our hearts, and induce us so to pass
, the remainder of our earthly portion, that when our
I summons shall coiuj wo may not be unprep ire l to
j die.
\ The preamble and res dutions wore then unani
mously adopted, and the meeting adjourned.
