Harmonic Minstrels.
This new troupe, modelled after the Christy
and Campbell Troupe?, and recently organized,
in this city, gave a Rehearsal last evening at
the Athenaeum, to which the members of tho
press, and others were invited.
The performances were conducted with great
spirit and propriety, and evidenced no small
amount of talent and cultivation in the per
formers. The music, both vocal and instru
mental was of a high character, —somo of the
voices possessing raro sweetness of tone, while
the choruses were excellent as any wo have heard
in any band of this kiud. In the department
of fun, and delineation of nogro character, do- ;
cided talent was displayed, which can but oh
tain celebrity, when the Troupe shall have ac
quired that freedom from embarrassment, which
is so absolutely necessary to the production of
genuine comicality, wit and humor.
It would be unreasonable to expect of any
band so recently organized ns this, that degree
of perfection which long study and practice
nlone can give. They start out however with .
every prospect of success—the material is pre- i
sent in tho Troupe,—tho full developemcnt will
soon follow. The first public Concort of the
Harmonics will be given on Thursday eveniug
next, at the Athentoum. We bespeak for them
a generous patronage and encouragement.
-
Brewer's Moving Mirror.
This Panoramic view of tho World, compri
sing the most strikiug scenes ami places of tho
threo Zones, will soon bo exhibited in our City.
Having never seen it, wo cannot speak from our
own knowledge of its merits, but we take pleas
ure in presenting the following notice from a
paper of deservedly high character; the Jfation
al Intelligencer aua:
‘•Wo gladly recommond this beautiful work,
of art, as an exhibition richly deserving of tho i
high praises which are every where so freely |
lavished upon it, and every way worthy of the !
crowds of visitors which it is nightly attracting.
It is really a most graphic and splendid pro
duction and as interesting and attractive in its
subjects and dosign as it is beautiful in its exe
cution. In it is repereseuted the choicest na
tural scenery of the world, and tho chief natu
ral and artificial curiosities and beauties to be !
found in tho four quarters of tho globe. The j
wonder is that so many truthful representa
tions of actual scenes, front so many parts of the I
earth, can bo given in a single exhibition; but
old travellers will at once pronounce each ob
ject, as it passes, to boas accurately as it is
beautifully portrayed, whether its home be in
the frozen ocean or the fervent heat of the tor- |
rid zono. No similar exhibition has ever been
rcceivod in our city with such universal appro- .
bation and delight. It is visited by our most !
distinguished oitizons, by our first artists, by
troops of ladies, by tho clergy, ntul by the ma
ny dignitaries and crowds of strangers by whom
Washington is 60 well filled at present, and
they all seem to bo unanimous in their expres
sions of delight.”
[From the Charleston Mercury 14th.]
CliniTeton uml Savanimli.
An advertisement has boon published in our 1
paper, giving notice that application will bo
made to tho next Legislature tor the incorpora- j
tion of a Company to construct a Railroad be
tween Charleston and Savannah. An esteem
ed correspondent also, in a former number of i
tho Mercury, and agaiu to-day, culls attention
poiutedly to the subject, nud indicates a route, J
tho result of a long acquaintance with tho re
gion of country through which the Road would |
pass. We attach great weight to his opinion, 1
also, that tho natural resources of this Road :
would make it a profitable investment. Such !
lias long been our own impression.
Tho idea of this Railroad is far from now. !
Wo have talked it over many a time with intcl- i
ligont planters in Colleton nud Beaufort Lis- I
tricts, and tho conclusion from all wo have
hoard has over been, that this connexion must j
sometime be made, even if it answered no other j
purpose than opening tho intermediate country
to market, and meeting the natural demand j
for business intercourse between tho cities of j
Savannah and Charleston.
We know also that many intelligent citizens j
of the former have long been impressed with ■
the necessity of a route by land which should !
connect Savannah with Charleston and tho
North, so as to save time nud expense ns much
as possible. The inero promotion ul intercourse
between the congenial population of South K.is. 1
tern Georgia and Carolina ha? been felt on
both sides of the River ns an object of in mean ;
importance, aud this has oddo I to the anxiety !
•of patriotic men ofboth States to effect tho com- j
merciai union of Savannah and Charleston.
We believe the advantages of this R..d would
be fairly shared between the two cities, and that
both are deeply interested in its construction. 1
A daily connection by steamboat’ is now kept
up, not because it is profitable, but 1. • :m-o it is i
necessary. Savannah must have daily mail
.communication with the North, and a moan -of !
daily sending on the passengers by her R ul- i
roods.
These necessities aro increasing instead of i
wearing out, and the completion of the great j
route to tho Gulf of Mexico, now determined j
on, will add fourfold to the demands of a direct i
and speedy transit along the Atlantic c *.i-t to
the North.
The present line of steamers between Savan* j
nab and Charleston, has no aid from the inter !
mediate country. It crosses simply the barren
sea; and this for tho purpose of gaining time. !
Rut a Rail road between the cities would ac
complish the distance in tivo-thirds or one half ’
the time, and would be aided by the travel and
transportation of ninety miles ~f cultivated
country, which would In* render 1 doubly val
uable by such facilities to market. On thi- j
route there is a great body of wealthy planters,
who would find equally their interests and their
convenience subserved by the opening of this :
Road, and in whose intelligence wo have too
much confidence to believe that they will allow |
the opportunity to slip through their hands.— i
To Savannah aud t harleston it is a quotlon
whether they will allow the tide of gmcral 1
travel and business to work i- way through in
terior channels, leaving the t i ■ it ~ „ wn
Imro resources; but to the interior country ho- |
tween the cities, it is a not less interesting <|u
tion, whether the planters will take advTmtag. j
of tho opportunity to combine their interests
with those of commerce, and open to their and tors
the valuable markets of Savannah aud Charles
ton.

Miss Greenfield, “tbo Black Swan,” who re
cently gave several concerts in our Atlantic cit
ies, is now in England, vrnoro she is lionized by
the Duchess of Sutherland and her circle. The
Duchess h 9 given a morning concert, at Suth
erland House at which the Swan sang several
pieces and was warmly encored. A large num
ber of tho aristocracy was present, as was nisi*
Mrs. Stowe, who presented the Swan with a
splendid dress of moire antique, trimmed wUh
busies, which the wore.
Italian Fidelity to Mazzlnl.
Tfyq London Times, when recording tho in
telligence of the security of Mazzini, says tho
fact of his safe return to England from Italy,
proves how faithJnl tho people of the continent
arc to tho cause ho Advocates. It must have 1
beenin tho power of scores, nay, hundreds, 1
during his absence, to have betrayed him to
his pursuers. Rut ho is safe. ‘Another illustra
tion of the state of popular feeding in the por
tions of Italy now in the hands of Austria, is
afforded by the fact that the leader of tho in
surrcction in Milan was in that city throe
mouths before the outbreak—his errand knowu
to hundreds—yet his presence not betrayed.—
More than that, tho Times is informed that he
rested securely in that eity for a month after ,
i the insurrection had been suppressed, aud then j
left Italy in safety for London.

Death of Mrw. \V T~V. Preston.
We regret to nnnounco the death of Mrs. W.
C. Preston, which melancholy event occurred
at Summer Homo near Columbia, on Saturday
[ evening.
Mrs. Preston was the daughter of tin late

gift?, in tho possession of which she was sin
gulurly allied to her distinguished husband. She
was the second wife of the llon.jNV. C. Preston,

In a letter to the citizens of Springfield, Mis
j souri, Col. Ronton sp >aks in the strongest terms
| of condemnation of some of President Pierce’s
I appointments for that Mato. ‘-The President,”
he says, “was deceived by false representations,
to give offices to scamps whose legs were nev
er crossed under a gentleman’s table—who wero
the scum and dregs of all parties—who were
fugitives from routed fields, or deserters from
pledges given to the people, when they obtain
eu these appointments.”
