TtJESDAY. OCT. 11, i B r>:t.
yr *T” The Secretary of the Navy visited the
Tliihrtelplii.i Navy Yard on Tuesday morning,
and inspected every department of it. lie was
received with a salute of seventeen guns, when
lie went on board the Cayane and St. Mary’s,
salutes wore also fired by those vessels, and
their yards were Manned. He'also, visited the ,
receiving ship Union and steamer Fulton. Ito
was accompanied by Messrs. Florence, Witte,
an 1 Itahins, Members of Congress,
The l'lull Indians.
The Indians on Salt L ike arc giving serious
trouble, having killed many persons in Utah.
The Governor had issued a proclamation call -
ing all the military forces of the territory into
service. JIo had also ordered a wall to bo built’
around the city, twenty feet high and eight
thick, with a ditch ou the outside.
A body of fifty armed men had been sent out,
but no captures had been made, llot work is |
anticipated.
Convention of t hi/.ciis soldiers.
The Bth of January will lurnish an ocean n
of much interest at Philadelphia. On that day
a national convention of soldiers of the war of J
I*l-, an! their sons, will he held there, at
which delegates are expected to be present from
fill parts of the couutry. The objects of this j
gathering are “to revive the recollections of the
war, and tj adopt such measures as may he i
n •eessaiy to press on Congress the claims of ;
those who stepped forward to defeu 1 their conn
tiy iu the hour of peril.”

1 -isell as mini, ractive as possible, by adopting |
life most hideous of costumes, mid arranging
her hair in the must unbecoming of styles —in

bloomer, and imagine t at it is something
graceful and Oriental, shrouding, vet enhanc
ing the beauty of your lair forms, hearken to
my description of Miss Lucy's dress, and hence
forth condemn strong-mindedness and Rloom
erism ns deadly sins.
The material of the entire dress was black
tiarego, lined with white -litnslin, which is the \
climax of bad taste; the skirt reached ale.at to |
the knee; the waist was very low, clumsy and
shapeless, made op *u iu front, with a w hite un- j
der handkerchief: the sleeves wo re docked n ‘
little below the elbow, and under them were :
white muslin ones; hut the most important fen- .
lure was the pantaloons. Yes, not pantalettes, ‘

taste and comfort to fanaticism, as to encase
her free limbs in such odious garments, and in
pitch warm weather too. The whole figure was
so irresistibly comical, that [could not restrain
my laughter. I should think sin* would be cob- ;
bed whenever she made her appearance in tin
street. If, after having adopted this outlandish
garb, the wearer could dismiss all thought of it
from her mind, her eccentricity would be less j
unpardonable; but this, alas! is impossible.
The greatest care is noeessary in sitting down
to keep the short skirts in order; and the
strong-minded woman devoted ns much time ,
and attention to this important matter as the
vainest belle could have done to the arrange
ment of her fiouuces.
Ordination of a Lady Pastor.
Rov. Miss Antoinette L. Drown was ordain
ed to the Pastorate of a congregation in .South
Rutlor, Wayne county, X. Y., on Tuesday of j
last week. Tho exercises on the occasion !
ure thus recapitulated in the Boston Traveller:
The parties engaged in the transaction were
llev. Mr. Nipper, of Victoria; II n. Gerrit j
Smith, Rev. Mr. Lee, of Syracuse; Mr. Cau
den, one of the Deacons of the Church : Klder I
MeCoon. of Butler; the Rov. Mr. llicks, of
Walworth. The curiosity of the affair is that
the parties engaged in this novel work of or
daining a female pastor seem to have boeu ut
ter disbelievers in tho necessity of ordination (
t> tho pastoral work.
Mr. Cauden, tho Deacon of tho Church, in
troduced tho business by saying • This church 1
docs not believe iu the necessity of ordination j
us a qualification to preach tho Gospel, but that
whatever individual has tho capacity, and is
willing to take upon himself the duty, is nt
liberty to become the pastor of any people to !
whom his services are acceptable. The Dea- i
eon then introduced ‘our friend Gerrit Pmith/
who sat in tho pulpit, and who was expected to ;
make an address. Tho gentleman rose and he- i
gnn thus: *1 do not believe in ecclesiastical or- I
dination in any senso of tho term ; do not be- !
lieve in any one individual being set apart to 1
exclusively preach tho Gospel/ Ho then pro- j
eeeded to congratulate the people on the choice !
of one for their pastor who was ‘wise and ,
strong and good and faithful, and trusting, and i
full of love.’ Mr. S. made way fur ‘brother ;
Lee/ who preached on the text, ‘There, is
neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond 1
nor free, there is neither male nor female, for
yo are nil one in Christ.’—Gal. 3,25. We can
not learn from tho reporter's account of the i
sermon, what tho preacher’s train of argument 1
was, only that it was designed b* ‘vindicate his
broakiug in upon the customs of the Chri.-iian
world.’ After the sermon we are told that ‘Ki
ller Coon offered tho ordaining prayer/ Then
followed an address by Rev. Mr. llicks. Ho
told her that she ‘stood in n novel position, but
in one not new ; it was old as the Bible. He
admired her position, because she bad dared to
m ike the inovation, to be the first in this ago
to assume a position on this question/ The ex
ercises concluded by singing Lot Zion’s Watch
men all awake !’ and tho benediction from the
ady pastor.
