Santa Anna and the, Mexican Army.
The National Intelligencer publishes a letter
from the Mexican Legation, showing that the
object of Santa Anna, in raising a h.rge num- ;
ber of troops, is neither to overawe the Mexican
people nor to make war upon any friendly
power, but to repel attacks from Indians, ami
prevent unlawful and armed incursions from the j
AmericaH side of the Rio Grande. The U. S.
• lovernmcht, it Is allegd, has not carried out
the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in which it
obligated itself to hold in check the wild In
dians on its frontiers, and therefore Santa Anna ,
lias been compelled to sCnd a large force to the ;
Itio Grande, tts a matter of self protection.

A Letter of Columbus.
We lay beforo our readers a copy of the let
ter written by Columbus in the year 1502, four
years before his death, to the directors of the
liauk of Genoa, which, wo are sure, will bo
read with deepest interest. If wo are not tnis
takon, it has never been reprinted on this side
of the Atlantic, and although distinctly alluded
to by Irving iu the appendix to his life of Co
lumbus, does not appear at length in that work.
The letter exhibits new proof of the generous
benevolence of the real discoverer, who, wh n
about to embark on his last voyage, turned his
eyes affectionately towards his natiro city,
and made a liberal benefaction for its poor.

ni our sale li st of Proprietary Medicines for some years
j A customer, to whom 1 can refer for any enquiries, tie
sires me to let you know the particulars ot her case.
; She had been troubled for years with a disordered liver
! and had digestion. On the last occasion, however, the
virulence of the attack was so alarming, and the in
datamation set in so severely, that doubts were t-uter
tallied of her being able to bear up under it; for
tunately she was induced to try your Pills, and she in
forms me that after the first, and each succeeding dose,
she had great relief. She continued to take them, and
although she used only three boxes, she is now iu the
enjoyment of perfect health. I could have sent you
many more cases, but the above, from the severity ol
the attack, and the speedy cure, I think speaks much
in favor of your astonishing Pills. (Signed)
